Chapter 15 - The Voice That Used Daniel’s Name

Daniel woke inside his own bedroom.

Morning sunlight filled the room.

For several seconds, he believed everything had been a nightmare.

Then he saw the armed officer outside the door.

Laura sat beside the window.

Emily slept curled against her.

Taylor rested in a chair near the wall with a bandage around her hand.

Daniel tried to sit up.

Pain spread through his skull.

Laura approached.

“Don’t move too quickly.”

“How long?”

“Sixteen hours.”

“Reed?”

“Alive. Restrained in a federal isolation unit.”

“Evelyn?”

Taylor answered.

“Surgery. The doctors think she’ll survive.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Are you all right?”

“I don’t know which memories are mine.”

Laura sat beside him.

“Neither do I.”

The two women exchanged a look that contained years of harm, guilt, resentment, and understanding.

Daniel touched the side of his head.

“What happened in the elevator?”

“You lost consciousness,” Laura said. “Ortiz found you beside Reed.”

“He said the Director was moving into me.”

The room became silent.

Federal doctors had scanned Daniel’s brain. They found unusual electrical activity but no evidence of any physical implant.

The Archive did not require one.

Reed’s transfer could occur through sound, emotional activation, and repeated memory patterns.

Daniel remembered seeing images during the fight.

His mother.

The clinic.

The chair.

A voice calling him a failed host.

“What did the doctors say?”

“That you may experience false memories,” Laura replied. “Voices. Changes in personality.”

“And if I do?”

No one answered.

Daniel looked toward the door.

“Where is Ortiz?”

“She is searching Reed’s records.”

“Has she found the other vaults?”

“One.”

Laura handed him a map.

A red circle marked a location beneath Central City.

VAULT 5 was active.

Traffic cameras showed several people entering the underground site during the night. One was Dr. Voss.

Another was L-2.

The third wore a dark hood and carried the pink notebook.

“Who took the notebook?” Daniel asked.

“No one knows,” Taylor said. “It disappeared from evidence.”

Emily stirred.

Her eyes opened.

She looked at Daniel.

For a moment, fear crossed her face.

Then she ran to him.

“Daddy.”

He held her carefully.

“Are you okay?”

She nodded against his chest.

“Mommy came home.”

Daniel looked at Laura.

“Yes.”

“And the other Mommy?”

“Nora is in the hospital.”

Nora had survived cardiac arrest but remained unconscious.

L-2 was still missing.

Emily whispered, “There’s another one.”

Daniel looked down.

“Another Mommy?”

“No. Another Daddy.”

The room became cold.

“What do you mean?”

Emily climbed from the bed and retrieved a folded drawing from her backpack.

It showed the underground vault.

Two men stood inside.

Both had Daniel’s face.

One was labeled DADDY.

The other was labeled THE MAN WHO REMEMBERS.

“When did you draw this?” Laura asked.

“Before Grandma put me in the freezer.”

Daniel stared at the second figure.

“You had never seen anyone who looked like me.”

Emily shook her head.

“He talked through the wall.”

“What did he say?”

“That the wrong Daniel came home.”

Laura took the drawing.

On the back was a sequence of numbers.

Not written in Emily’s handwriting.

Taylor read them aloud.

The six-note melody began playing from Daniel’s phone.

He had not touched it.

Every light in the bedroom went out.

The officer outside shouted.

Red emergency lights activated.

Daniel heard a voice inside his head.

Not through the phone.

Not through a speaker.

Inside him.

You took longer than expected.

Daniel closed his eyes.

A memory appeared.

A memory that could not belong to him.

He stood inside the Central City vault wearing a white laboratory coat.

Laura was strapped to a chair.

Evelyn stood beside him.

A young Daniel watched from behind glass.

The man in the laboratory looked into a mirror.

He had Daniel’s face.

But the date on the wall was seventeen years before Daniel had been born.

The voice inside his mind continued.

The first three vaults are open.

The fourth is waking.

And your daughter has already told us where the sixth is.

Daniel opened his eyes.

Emily was no longer in his arms.

The bedroom window stood open.

Snow blew across the carpet.

On the glass, someone had drawn a silver moon.

Laura screamed Emily’s name.

Daniel ran to the window.

A black vehicle was disappearing at the end of the street.

A small hand pressed against its rear window.

Emily’s hand.

Daniel reached for his phone, but the screen changed before he could call anyone.

A live video appeared.

Emily sat inside the vehicle between L-2 and Dr. Voss.

Across from them sat a man whose face remained hidden in shadow.

The man leaned forward.

Daniel saw his own eyes.

His own scar.

His own wedding ring.

The stranger smiled.

“Hello, brother.”

The video ended.

A message appeared.

VAULT 4 OPENS AT MIDNIGHT.

BRING LAURA.

COME WITHOUT THE WOMAN YOU CALL TAYLOR.

SHE IS NOT MARGARET’S DAUGHTER.

Taylor read the message over Daniel’s shoulder.

Her face went white.

Behind them, Evelyn’s voice came through the bedroom speaker system.

She was supposed to be unconscious in a guarded hospital.

Yet she sounded completely awake.

“Daniel, before you follow him, ask Laura what happened to the real Taylor Shaw.”

Daniel slowly turned.

Laura stood near the bed.

Her expression had changed.

Taylor backed away from her.

“What does she mean?” Taylor whispered.

Laura said nothing.

The front door alarm began ringing.

Detective Ortiz rushed upstairs holding a sealed evidence folder.

“Daniel, we found the DNA report from Margaret Shaw’s grave.”

She looked at Taylor.

“The body buried there was six years old.”

No one moved.

Ortiz opened the folder.
