Chapter 10 - The Daughter Who Remembered Two Mothers

Daniel reached Nora before she hit the floor.
L-2 disappeared into the smoke.
Ortiz fired once, but the bullet missed. The chemical released by the sprinklers caused dizziness and temporary paralysis. Daniel dragged Nora into a storage room and sealed the door.
Reed joined them wearing an emergency mask.
“What did she inject?”
Nora could not speak.
Her eyes moved toward her pocket.
Daniel found a small recorder hidden inside it.
He pressed play.
Nora’s voice came through the speaker.
If L-2 finds me, she will try to recover the memories Evelyn stored in my nervous system. The extraction agent will stop my heart within six minutes.
Daniel searched the shelves for medical supplies.
Reed called for a trauma team, but most of the facility personnel had been incapacitated.
The recording continued.
There is an antidote in Evelyn’s emergency kit. L-2 carries it because she needs me alive for at least four minutes.
Ortiz left to search.
Daniel held Nora’s hand.
“Stay with me.”
Nora looked at him with Laura’s eyes.
It felt like betrayal to care whether she lived.
It also felt monstrous not to.
Ortiz returned with a black case found in the ventilation passage. Reed identified the medication and injected Nora.
Her pulse stabilized.
The sprinklers stopped.
Emergency teams secured the facility, but L-2 had escaped.
So had Emily.
Daniel ran to the room where his daughter had been held.
The window was sealed. The door showed no forced entry.
A child’s drawing lay on the bed.
It showed Emily holding hands with two women who had Laura’s face.
Below it she had written:
I HAVE TO FIND THE REAL ONE.
Security footage showed Emily walking calmly down a corridor during the alarm. She entered a maintenance lift using an access card stolen from Agent Reed.
A figure waited inside the lift.
Taylor.
Daniel turned on Reed.
“You said Taylor was missing with Evelyn.”
“She may have escaped.”
“She walked into your facility.”
Reed reviewed the footage.
Taylor’s expression was blank. A small device had been attached behind her ear.
“She may be under conditioning,” Nora said weakly.
Daniel looked at the screen.
“Where did the lift go?”
“Underground loading tunnel,” Reed answered.
A vehicle had left the facility during the fire alert. Its transponder identified it as a federal medical transport.
It was heading west.
Toward Hollow Creek.
Laura’s two replacements, Emily, Taylor, Evelyn, and possibly Voss were now moving toward the Silver House.
Daniel prepared to leave.
Reed ordered him to remain.
“You are compromised,” the agent said.
“My daughter is in that vehicle.”
“And they may be using her to draw you into another activation event.”
“Then I’m exactly where they want me.”
“That is not an argument for going.”
“It is if they will keep her alive until I arrive.”
Ortiz removed her badge and placed it on Reed’s desk.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
“You absorbed my case. That means I’m no longer required to follow your orders.”
“You are still a police officer.”
“Not for the next few hours.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You don’t have to do this.”
“Yes, I do.”
Nora insisted on coming.
“You were nearly killed,” Daniel said.
“I know the Silver House.”
“You said you never saw the main facility.”
“The Silver House is where I was trained.”
Reed opposed the plan until Daniel threatened to leave without federal support.
Finally, the agent assigned a small tactical team.
They traveled in two vehicles.
Nora explained the layout from memory. The facility appeared above ground as an abandoned boarding school. The real laboratories lay beneath the chapel.
“Evelyn likes red doors,” Ortiz said.
“They are part of the conditioning,” Nora replied. “Red means transition. A subject enters as one person and leaves as another.”
“What does the silver moon mean?” Daniel asked.
“Continuation after death.”
Daniel looked through the window at the dark highway.
“What did Emily mean when she said both women think they are her mother?”
Nora remained silent for a long time.
“During transfer training, we were not simply given Laura’s memories. We were taught to love you.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“You cannot teach that.”
“You can create dependency, repetition, reward, fear, and association. Eventually, the brain calls it love.”
“That is not the same.”
“No,” Nora said. “But from inside, the difference is difficult to see.”
She looked down at her hands.
“When L-2 saw Emily at the lake, the maternal response overwhelmed her orders. That is why she helped you escape.”
“She also kidnapped Emily from the hospital.”
“That may have been Evelyn.”
“The camera showed a woman in a red coat.”
“Evelyn trained us to wear one when impersonating her.”
Daniel remembered Evelyn’s photograph outside the cabin years earlier.
“How many people have worn her face?”
“More than you want to know.”
They reached the Hollow Creek perimeter shortly before midnight.
The town stood abandoned beneath a full moon. Houses lined empty streets. Old cars remained parked beside cracked sidewalks. Snow covered playground equipment and collapsed store roofs.
At the center of town rose the Silver House.
It was not silver.
It was a large brick school with a silver moon mounted above the entrance.
Every window was dark.
As Daniel approached, lights began turning on one by one.
First floor.
Second floor.
Third floor.
Then the chapel bell rang.
A child’s voice came through speakers hidden across the town.
“Daddy, don’t come inside.”
Daniel looked toward the school.
Emily stood in the highest window.
A woman stood behind her.
Not Evelyn.
Laura.
The real Laura.
May you like
Daniel knew before she spoke.
“Daniel,” her voice echoed through the speakers. “You need to leave before I remember what they made me do.”
