Chapter 9 - The Man Who Survived

Julián knocked Elena to the pavement as the shot cracked above them.

The bullet struck the courthouse column. Officers dragged Mateo behind a vehicle while Mara’s team searched rooftops. In the confusion, Andrés disappeared.

The shooter was later found dead in an office building two blocks away, killed by a single close-range shot before police reached him. His rifle matched the one used at the convent. In his pocket was a prepaid phone containing one outgoing message.

Target warned. Debt paid.

Andrés had not pointed at Elena to mark her. He had warned her.

That evening, a secure message appeared on Julián’s phone with instructions to come alone to the abandoned planetarium where his mother once took him as a child. Mara objected, then arranged surveillance when Julián refused to stay away.

Andrés waited beneath the broken dome. Without the polished suit and careful posture, he looked older. A scar ran behind his left ear and disappeared beneath his collar.

“Are you Gabriel Serrano?” Julián asked.

“Yes.”

“Prove it.”

Andrés placed a childhood photograph on a bench. It showed Elena and Gabriel beside Camila at a summer estate. He also recited details Elena later confirmed: a hidden crack in the estate fountain, the name of her first horse, the song their father sang when drunk.

“Why hide from Mateo?” Julián demanded.

“Because everyone who knew he was mine became a target.”

“He became a target anyway.”

Gabriel accepted the accusation. “I thought I could dismantle the trust network before his thirteenth birthday. I was wrong.”

He explained the boating accident. Their father discovered Gabriel planned to expose decades of stolen trust income. Camila lured him onto the boat under the pretense of reconciliation. An explosion threw him into the water. A fisherman found him miles downshore. While he recovered under an assumed name, the Serranos declared him dead.

“Why not go to police?”

“The judge who buried your father’s complaint was still in office. Two detectives were on the foundation payroll. Tomás controlled the records. I had no proof strong enough to survive them.”

“And now?”

“Now Mateo turning thirteen forces the original trust archive to release automatically.”

Julián studied him. “Camila wants to stop it.”

“So does someone else.”

Gabriel said Camila had spent years stealing, but she did not design the system. Elena’s grandfather had created a private council to protect the family empire. The council could remove heirs by declaring them unstable, illegitimate, or dead. Camila served them because they allowed her to keep a portion.

“Who leads the council?”

“I do not know. Tomás called him the Custodian.”

Gabriel handed Julián a memory card. It contained photographs of secret meetings, account transfers, and a recent image of Camila entering a gated estate with the missing police officer from the safe apartment.

Then Gabriel said the sentence Julián had feared.

“Mateo cannot attend the hearing.”

“He has to. The judge ordered it.”

“The courthouse insider is still active. The DNA results will arrive there. If the samples are switched, Mateo loses the trust and the evidence archive stays sealed.”

Julián looked toward the dark observation booths, knowing Mara was listening. “Then we protect the samples.”

Gabriel shook his head. “You cannot protect what has already been changed.”

He revealed that he had broken into the testing laboratory that afternoon. Mateo’s sample was gone. In its place was DNA from an unrelated child.

Mara emerged from the shadows with her weapon lowered but ready. “Who accessed the lab?”

Gabriel gave her a name.

Assistant District Attorney Samuel Rivas, the prosecutor leading the case against Tomás.

Mara’s face hardened. Rivas had approved every warrant, controlled every evidence transfer, and arranged Lucía’s protective placement.

Julián called the hospital.

Lucía was no longer in her room.

A discharge order had been signed thirty minutes earlier.

At the planetarium, Gabriel showed Julián a scar across his ribs from the explosion and another beneath his jaw from reconstructive surgery. He carried no family photographs except one of Mateo at age six, taken during a school performance. Julián demanded to know who had given it to him. Gabriel admitted Elena had sent occasional pictures through an encrypted account. The revelation felt like another hidden corridor in the marriage, but Gabriel insisted Elena never disclosed their location or daily routines. He had watched from afar because approaching could expose the boy. Julián told him distance had not prevented danger; it had only ensured Mateo faced it without knowing why. Gabriel accepted that judgment and then gave Julián a list of six council members. A seventh line was blank. He believed the unknown member had access to the Vegas before Julián ever met Elena.
