Chapter 11 - What Elena Signed

The public believed the case was over.

Camila was in jail. Tomás had begun cooperating. Rivas was the subject of a nationwide search. Mateo’s trust had vested, and federal accountants were tracing stolen assets across six countries.

Inside the Vega home, nothing felt resolved.

Gabriel was missing. Lucía woke from sedation with fragments of memory. Elena avoided Julián’s questions about the adoption. The accusation Camila made in the interview room hung between them.

On the third night after the hearing, Julián placed the first adoption paper on the kitchen island. Federal investigators had recovered it from the trust archive.

Elena’s signature appeared beneath a statement declaring Lucía deceased.

“Tell me the truth,” he said.

Elena sat across from him. “I was twenty-one. Mother brought Mateo to me and said Gabriel’s girlfriend had died. She said the baby would go into state care unless I signed temporary guardianship papers.”

“This is not temporary guardianship.”

“I know that now.”

“Did you know then?”

Elena’s eyes filled, but she did not look away. “I knew the document was wrong. I did not know Lucía was alive. I signed because Mateo was sick and Mother said the hospital would not treat him without legal authority.”

“You never told me.”

“I was afraid you would see the lie before you saw our son.”

Julián understood fear. He did not excuse it.

“You let me sign a later adoption based on false records.”

“Yes.”

“You let Mateo build his life on them.”

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt more than denial.

Mateo had been standing in the hallway. Neither adult noticed until he spoke.

“Would you have kept me if the papers were real?”

Elena turned. “Mateo.”

“Would you?”

Julián answered first. “Yes.”

Elena crossed the room, but Mateo stepped back. “You made the note,” he said. “You made Dad choose me because you never told him he had a choice.”

Then he ran upstairs and locked his door.

The next morning, he was gone.

His window stood open. The security camera showed him leaving at 5:11 a.m. with a backpack. No one forced him. He walked to the corner and entered a dark green car.

The driver’s face was hidden, but the license plate belonged to Ana Molina, the retired nurse.

Mara reached Ana’s house and found it empty. A message on the table instructed Julián to stop searching for Gabriel and destroy all references to Vault Seven.

Elena recognized the handwriting as Ana’s.

Lucía, when shown the note, began shaking. “Ana was not only a nurse,” she said. “She kept the children’s registry.”

“What registry?” Mara asked.

“The replacements.”

Lucía explained that Santa Aurelia had handled infants connected to wealthy families. Some were hidden heirs. Others replaced babies who died, were disabled, or threatened inheritance plans. Ana recorded both original and assigned identities.

“Vault Seven contains that registry,” Lucía said. “If it opens, hundreds of families learn their children are not who they believe.”

Julián’s phone received a photograph.

Mateo sat beside Ana in the green car, unharmed but furious. He held a handwritten sign.

I LEFT BY CHOICE.

A second message followed from an unknown number.

After Mateo ran away, Julián entered his room and found a list taped beneath the desk. It contained questions the boy had been afraid to ask: Did Mom choose me because she felt guilty? Would Dad have loved a different child more? Is Lucía my mother if she never raised me? Does Gabriel get to be my father because of blood? The final question was underlined twice: What part of me belongs only to me? Julián photographed the page but left it in place. He understood that finding Mateo physically would not be enough. The adults had turned the boy into an heir, a witness, a stolen infant, and a symbol. Mateo needed the right to become ordinary again. When Lucía mentioned the replacement registry, Julián feared that hundreds of other children had grown up under similarly manufactured stories, each carrying questions no document could answer.

Your son wants the truth. Bring Elena to Santa Aurelia at sunset.
