Chapter 11 - the lie that almost worked

Vanessa knew exactly where to cut.
Vincent's guilt.
Grace's secrecy.
The missed phone call.
The hidden evidence.
Every unanswered question he had carried for three years.
She saw uncertainty enter his face.
Only a little.
Enough.
"Grace was afraid of you," Vanessa said.
Martha stepped forward.
"That is a lie."
"Is it?"
Vanessa looked around at the guests.
"Ask why she hid evidence from her own husband."
Vincent said nothing.
"Ask why she changed her will."
Detective Price watched.
Vanessa continued.
"Ask why she called Evelyn instead of Vincent."
Vincent's jaw tightened.
Lily clung to him.
Vanessa smiled faintly.
"Grace knew what kind of man you were."
The words hurt because Vincent had asked himself versions of the same question.
Why had Grace not told him?
Why had she hidden everything?
Why had she made a video instead of coming home and putting the evidence in his hands?
Maybe she had been afraid of his temper.
His power.
His tendency to solve problems by controlling them.
Vanessa saw him thinking.
She took another step.
"The original codicil says Lily was to be removed from your care if Grace died under suspicious circumstances."
Martha stared.
Vincent's face went pale.
Vanessa nodded.
"That's why you haven't found it."
Price said, "How do you know what it says?"
Vanessa realized her mistake.
Too late.
The room became very quiet.
Price repeated, "How do you know?"
Vanessa looked at him.
"I heard Grace discuss it."
"When?"
No answer.
"Before she died?"
Vanessa's lips parted.
Price stepped closer.
"You told Mr. Moretti you never knew Grace personally."
Vanessa recovered.
"I misspoke."
Vincent stared at her.
There it was.
The crack.
Not enough for murder.
Enough for the lie.
"You knew her."
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Through Julian."
"How well?"
"Not well."
Vincent's voice dropped.
"You were in a room with her when she accused your brother of stealing."
Vanessa stopped breathing.
She understood immediately.
He had heard the recording.
The performance ended.
Her face changed.
No tears.
No softness.
Only calculation.
"You found everything."
"Enough."
Vanessa looked toward the door.
Price nodded to an officer.
This time the officer blocked it.
"You said I wasn't under arrest."
"You weren't."
"What changed?"
"You admitted prior contact with Grace Moretti after repeatedly denying it during our informal questioning earlier this evening."
"That isn't a crime."
"No."
Price glanced at the suitcase.
"But fraudulent financial documents may be."
Vanessa laughed.
"You don't even have a warrant."
"Not yet."
Her confidence returned.
"Then move."
Price did.
Vanessa was genuinely surprised.
She walked to the front door.
Vincent did not stop her.
She turned.
For a moment they looked at each other across the room.
Three years of deception stood between them.
Vanessa said quietly, "You have no idea what Grace was hiding from you."
Vincent answered, "Neither do you."
She left.
Price immediately turned to Vincent.
"Good."
Vincent stared.
"You let her walk."
"We're following her."
Price showed him his phone.
A tracker had been placed on Vanessa's car under court authorization after the evidence review earlier that day.
"If she goes to Julian, we get both."
Vincent looked at Lily.
"I don't care about Julian."
"You will if he killed your wife."
That sentence silenced him.
Martha took Lily upstairs.
The party ended within twenty minutes.
Guests left quietly.
Rumors would spread by morning.
Vincent did not care.
At ten forty-two, Vanessa's car stopped at a warehouse near the river.
Price received the location.
He left with two officers.
Vincent followed despite being told not to.
At the warehouse, Vanessa found Julian waiting.
He was furious.
"You brought them to the party?"
"I didn't know they had the box."
"You said Vincent believed you."
"He pretended."
Julian paced.
"The suitcase?"
"Still there."
"You idiot."
Vanessa slapped him.
The sound echoed.
"Do not call me that."
He stared at her.
"You tied his child to you with a cord."
"She wouldn't answer."
"She's five."
"I needed the codicil."
Julian laughed bitterly.
"You still think this is about the codicil?"
Vanessa stopped.
"What does that mean?"
Julian looked away.
She stared at him.
"Julian."
He opened a metal cabinet.
Inside were passports.
Cash.
Two phones.
Vanessa's face changed.
"You planned to leave."
"We both need to leave."
"No. You planned to leave without me."
He did not answer.
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
"What else are you hiding?"
Julian pulled free.
"This was always too big for you."
"Everything you have exists because of me."
"Everything I have is endangered because you wanted Vincent's house, his ring, his name."
"I wanted security."
"You wanted to become Grace."
Vanessa's face twisted.
"Don't say that."
"You wore her perfume."
"Shut up."
"You moved into her house."
"Shut up."
"You thought if Vincent loved you, somehow that meant you beat her."
Vanessa struck him again.
Julian grabbed her wrist.
"Enough."
Outside, Detective Price listened through an audio device hidden in Vanessa's handbag.
Vincent sat in the surveillance vehicle.
He heard every word.
Then Vanessa asked the question that changed the case.
"Did you tamper with Grace's brakes?"
Julian froze.
Even through audio alone, the silence was unmistakable.
Vanessa repeated, "Did you?"
Julian said, "You don't want the answer."
"I asked you."
"You were there when I told her to stop."
"That isn't an answer."
"You gave me her schedule."
Vincent closed his eyes.
Vanessa whispered, "I gave you the schedule because you said you were going to scare her."
"You knew what kind of problem she was."
"No."
"You knew."
"I did not know you would touch the car."
Julian laughed softly.
"You didn't ask."
Vanessa's breathing became rapid.
"You told me the accident was luck."
"I lied."
Outside, Price reached for the radio.
Then Julian said something that made him wait.
"The mechanic saw too much."
Vanessa went still.
"What mechanic?"
"The one Grace visited."
"You said you handled him."
"I did."
"How?"
Julian opened a second cabinet.
He removed a folder.
Vanessa stared.
"What is that?"
"Insurance."
Against you, he did not say.
Inside the folder were photographs of bank transfers, names, dates, and a signed statement from Martin Shea.
The missing broker.
Vanessa reached for it.
Julian pulled it away.
"You don't get this."
"Give it to me."
"No."
She lunged.
The folder fell.
Documents scattered.
A photograph landed face up.
Vanessa stared.
Martin Shea sat in a chair.
Alive.
A recent newspaper was visible beside him.
Vanessa looked at Julian.
"You know where he is."
Julian did not answer.
Vanessa bent and grabbed the photograph.
On the back was an address.
Price spoke into the radio.
"Move."
Police entered from both doors.
Julian ran.
Vanessa screamed.
Vincent saw everything through the windshield.
Julian reached a side exit.
An officer tackled him before he crossed the alley.
Vanessa stood motionless beside the scattered papers.
Price approached.
"Vanessa Cole, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit financial fraud, forgery, witness intimidation, and related offenses."
She looked past him.
Through the open warehouse door.
At Vincent.
For the first time since he met her, Vanessa looked small.
But she was still dangerous.
As Price placed her in handcuffs, she shouted, "Ask Grace why she changed Lily's guardianship."
Vincent stared.
May you like
Vanessa smiled.
"You still haven't found the codicil."
