Chapter 3 - The Story He Planned to Tell

Nathan began preparing his defense before he knew he had been accused.

He told his mother that Olivia had become unpredictable. He told friends that she cried without reason and frequently forgot conversations. At work, he mentioned that she might require “extra support” after the baby was born.

His strategy was clear.

If Olivia discovered the affair, he intended to portray her as unstable.

The knowledge frightened her more than his unfaithfulness.

Nathan understood that a believable lie was often built before the truth arrived.

Olivia decided she would not allow him to control the first version of the story.

She invited both families, several close friends, Lucas, Serena, and Nathan’s business partners to a gathering at the house. She described it as a small nursery celebration.

Nathan loved the idea.

“A fresh start,” he said.

Olivia smiled. “Exactly.”

Serena accepted the invitation within minutes.

Her message read, I wouldn’t miss it for anything.

Olivia stared at the words for a long time.

During the following week, Nathan behaved like the perfect husband. He painted one wall of the nursery, assembled the crib, and posted a photograph of himself holding a tiny pair of shoes.

The caption praised Olivia for carrying “their greatest blessing.”

Hundreds of people admired the picture.

None of them knew Serena had spent the previous evening in his office.

Olivia began to understand that Nathan did not experience guilt as other people did. He saw appearances as a substitute for character. If he looked devoted, he considered himself devoted. If people admired him, he believed admiration erased his actions.

Two days before the celebration, Olivia received the final financial report from Amelia.

The evidence was worse than expected.

Nathan had not only misused business funds. He had submitted forged expense descriptions and used Lucas’s electronic approval on several transfers.

The company’s internal auditor confirmed that the transactions could lead to Nathan’s removal.

Amelia placed the report on the table.

“You have enough evidence to proceed privately,” she said. “You do not have to expose him publicly.”

“I know.”

“Then why invite everyone?”

“Because he already made it public. He told our families I’m unstable. He told his partners I can’t manage my own finances. He built a stage for his lie.”

Olivia looked toward the nursery.

“I’m only changing what will be shown on it.”

The night before the gathering, Nathan entered the guest room.

He sat beside her and placed a hand near her knee.

“We’ve been distant.”

Olivia closed the book she was reading.

“Yes.”

“I know pregnancy has been difficult.”

“For both of us?”

He ignored the question.

“I want us to remember that we’re a team.”

Nathan took out the refinancing papers.

All Olivia had to do was sign.

She imagined the future he had planned: the baby born, the house tied to his debt, Olivia emotionally weakened, and Serena waiting for him to leave.

Nathan handed her a pen.

“For our family.”

Olivia took it.

For one moment, relief appeared in his eyes.

Then she placed the pen on the bedside table.

“Tomorrow,” she said. “After the celebration.”

Nathan smiled.

He leaned forward and kissed her forehead.

“You’re making the right decision.”

After he left, Olivia locked the door and opened the security application.

The evidence was organized and ready.

At the end of the presentation, she added a photograph of the ultrasound.

Beneath it, she typed one sentence.

My child will never learn that love means accepting betrayal.

Then she turned off the screen and listened to her baby’s steady movements in the darkness.
