Chapter 2 - The Price of Staying Silent
Olivia did not sleep beside Nathan that night.
She told him the baby was pressing against her ribs and that she would be more comfortable in the guest room. Nathan accepted the explanation without hesitation.
His lack of concern hurt almost as much as the affair.
At three in the morning, Olivia sat on the edge of the guest bed and watched every security recording.
Serena had visited the house nineteen times in four months.
In several recordings, Nathan kissed her near the stairs. In another, Serena laughed while holding one of Olivia’s maternity sweaters against herself.
The worst recording was not physical.
It was a conversation captured when the bedroom door had been left open.
“When are you going to leave her?” Serena asked.
“After the baby is born,” Nathan replied. “Divorcing her now would make me look terrible.”
“And the house?”
“She thinks it belongs only to her because of the trust. Once she signs the refinancing documents, I’ll have leverage.”
Olivia stopped the recording.
Two days earlier, Nathan had placed financial papers on the kitchen table. He claimed they were needed to obtain a better mortgage rate before the baby arrived.
Olivia had almost signed them.
The documents had nothing to do with saving money. Nathan wanted her to use the house as security for a loan connected to his business.
Had she signed, the home her grandmother left her could have been placed at risk.
Olivia copied every recording to two encrypted drives. She placed one in a bank deposit box and gave the other to her older sister, Claire.
When Claire watched the footage, she began to cry.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I always thought Nathan adored you.”
“So did I.”
“You need to leave tonight.”
Olivia shook her head.
“If I leave without a plan, he’ll control the story. He’ll say I became unstable. He’s already telling people pregnancy has made me emotional.”
Claire looked at her carefully.
“What are you going to do?”
“Protect my baby. Protect the house. Then tell the truth.”
Olivia met with a divorce attorney named Amelia Grant. Amelia advised her to avoid confrontation until they had secured the financial evidence and prepared the legal documents.
Together, they reviewed bank accounts, credit card statements, and property records.
Nathan had spent more than thirty-eight thousand dollars on Serena. Some of the payments came from the business account he shared with Lucas.
There were hotel charges, jewelry purchases, restaurant bills, and transfers disguised as consulting expenses.
He had even withdrawn money from the savings account created for the baby’s medical care.
That discovery ended the last trace of hesitation inside Olivia.
The affair had not merely damaged their marriage.
Nathan had taken from his unborn child to finance it.
Under Amelia’s guidance, Olivia opened an individual account for her income and moved only the portion legally belonging to her. She changed the passwords to her private accounts, updated the trust documents, and arranged for the locks to be replaced after Nathan received the divorce papers.
At home, she behaved as though nothing had changed.
Nathan became affectionate again.
He brought flowers, rubbed her shoulders, and spoke about the future.
Every gesture felt rehearsed.
One evening, he placed the refinancing papers in front of her again.
“We should sign these before the baby comes.”
Olivia turned a page slowly.
“I want Amelia to review them.”
Nathan’s smile tightened.
“Why involve a lawyer? It’s standard paperwork.”
“She manages the trust.”
“You don’t trust me?”
The cruelty of the question nearly made Olivia laugh.
“I’m tired,” she said. “We’ll discuss it later.”
Nathan took the documents away.
That night, the security camera recorded him calling Serena from the hallway.
“She’s getting suspicious,” he whispered. “But she won’t leave. She needs me too much.”
Olivia listened from the guest room.
Her hand rested over the child moving inside her.
Nathan was wrong.
