Chapter 10 - The Cabin Burns)

The first minutes unfolded exactly as Thaddeus had feared and nothing like Celia had planned.
Fire crossed the porch, entered through the broken rear window, and found the dry beams above the kitchen. The mountain wind pushed smoke through the cabin. Mercer struck the front door while his companion circled toward the rear.
Honora covered her mouth with a wet strip torn from the curtain. She lowered the hidden floorboard and discovered a second compartment beneath the first. The iron candlestick had jarred it loose earlier. Inside was a brass voice recorder and the empty square where a decoy box had rested.
She pressed play.
Thaddeus's voice rose beneath the crackle of fire.
"Mother, if you can hear this, there is still time."
He explained that the metal box contained nothing except marked banknotes and a tracking device. Anyone who stole it would lead investigators to the place where Victoria stored the originals she had taken from his office.
"Blue Heron," he said. "The truth is not in the box. The box is there to make them reveal themselves."
Then the front door split.
Honora pulled the old rope behind the altar. The trapdoor opened beneath Mercer, dropping him into the shallow storage pit. His pistol slid across the floor. The flames reached the ceiling.
The second man appeared in the doorway, silhouetted by rain.
For one impossible moment he looked like Thaddeus.
"Mom," he shouted.
The roof beam fell between them.
Honora collapsed beneath a shower of sparks. The portrait frame broke under her arm. Glass cut her palm. Through smoke she saw the man throw himself across the beam and reach for her.
His face came into view.
It was not Thaddeus.
It was Luis Ortega, the driver who had brought her to the cabin after the funeral.
He had returned because Honora never called. On the mountain road he saw the fire and followed the truck tracks. The word Mom had not been for her. A telephone in his pocket was connected to his mother, whom he had called before running into the cabin. Smoke and memory had transformed one desperate syllable into a miracle.
Honora felt foolish for half a second, then the rest of the roof groaned.
Luis dragged her toward the door. Mercer climbed from the pit and grabbed Honora's ankle. She kicked free, but he caught the broken portrait.
The backing tore away in his hand.
Dozens of thin pages spilled across the floor.
Thaddeus had hidden copies of the pension records behind his own photograph.
Mercer stared at them. Honora stared too. She had carried the evidence out of the mansion while Victoria watched.
Luis pulled her through the doorway as the roof collapsed. Rain struck Honora's face. She rolled into the mud and looked back.
Mercer emerged seconds later, coughing, with the portrait backing under his coat. He raised the pistol he had recovered from the floor.
A shot sounded from the trees.
Mercer's gun flew from his hand.
Samuel stood beside the root-cellar entrance with a hunting rifle. Celia stumbled behind him, her sleeve burned. They had escaped the tunnel through a ventilation shaft when fire blocked the main passage.
The state police arrived six minutes later. Their delay had been caused by nails scattered across the mountain road. Two tires were ruined, but the officers continued on foot after seeing smoke above the ridge.
They arrested Mercer and his companion. Firefighters saved the stone chimney and part of the eastern wall. Everything else burned down to black beams.
Honora sat in an ambulance while a medic wrapped her palm. Celia placed a tablet before Mercer and showed him live video from three hidden cameras. It recorded the fuel can, the ignition wire, his demand for Victoria's box, and his attack.
"Victoria will say you acted alone," Celia told him.
Mercer looked toward Honora.
She repeated the warning she had given him in the chapel. "Power needs a body to stand on. Tonight it chose yours."
At two in the morning, Mercer asked for a prosecutor.
He admitted Victoria ordered the cabin destroyed. Conrad supplied the money. He also revealed where he had delivered the tracked metal box: a private records room beneath Westbridge House.
Judge Bell signed a search warrant before dawn.
State investigators entered the mansion at seven. Behind the climate-controlled wine cellar they found financial records, forged contracts, Thaddeus's missing computer, and enough cash to connect Conrad to the shell companies.
They did not find Victoria.

Her bedroom was empty. Her passport was gone. On Thaddeus's desk lay Honora's silver mountain necklace and a note.
You wanted the truth. Ask your sister what she did with your son.
