Chapter 14 - The Choice Thomas Left Behind)

Richard Vale entered first.

Malcolm Reed entered from the opposite corridor.

For men who supposedly stood on opposing sides, they looked remarkably similar in that moment.

Both wanted the same thing.

Control.

Vale held no weapon.

Reed did.

Moreno aimed at Reed.

Federal agents aimed at Vale's men.

Nobody moved.

The upload reached twelve percent.

Vale looked at Mark.

"Stop it."

Reed said, "Destroy it."

Mark almost laughed.

"No."

Vale's calm vanished.

"You have no idea what you're releasing."

"Truth."

"Thousands of unrelated records could be exposed."

Elena stepped forward.

"Thomas separated civilian data."

Vale looked at her.

"Elena."

"Richard."

"You should have stayed dead."

"I enjoyed disappointing you."

Reed's weapon shifted.

Moreno immediately warned him.

"Don't."

Reed looked at Mark.

"Your father was a criminal."

"I know."

"He built Meridian."

"I know."

"He destroyed lives."

"I know."

"And you want to turn him into a hero?"

Mark shook his head.

"No."

That confused everyone.

Mark continued.

"I want people to know exactly what he did."

Vale stared.

"Your family name will be destroyed."

"Then it gets destroyed."

"Your company."

"Not mine."

"Your father's legacy."

"His problem."

The upload reached thirty-one percent.

Reed moved toward the terminal.

Moreno blocked him.

"Federal authority."

"You are under investigation."

"By who?"

Moreno smiled faintly.

"Enough people."

Sirens sounded outside.

Not local police.

More federal vehicles.

Moreno had transmitted Thomas's preliminary files before entering the facility.

Copies were already moving beyond Reed's reach.

Vale understood first.

"This is over."

Elena shook her head.

"No."

She looked at Mark.

"It doesn't end when evidence appears."

She was right.

Evidence created battles.

Trials.

Denials.

Deals.

But it changed the battlefield.

The upload reached sixty percent.

Then Mark's phone rang.

Daniel.

He answered.

"We're okay," Daniel said.

Mark almost collapsed from relief.

"Caitlyn?"

"Safe."

"Samantha?"

"Safe."

"Stay there."

Daniel hesitated.

"Mark."

"What?"

"Caitlyn found something."

"Not now."

"It's about Grandpa."

Mark looked at the upload.

Seventy-two percent.

"What?"

"She says the song has another verse."

Mark stopped.

"There isn't another verse."

"Apparently there is."

Caitlyn's voice came faintly through the phone.

"Daddy, Grandpa said never sing the last part unless the blue lantern breaks."

Mark looked toward Elena.

She had never heard this either.

"What does it say?"

Caitlyn began.

The final verse contained no numbers.

Only words.

North river sleeping.

Third bell below.

Bennett keeps what Meridian cannot know.

Elena's face drained.

"No."

Mark lowered the phone.

"What?"

Elena looked at the portable drive.

"This isn't the full archive."

Mark stared.

"What?"

"Thomas made another layer."

Vale suddenly moved.

Not toward the terminal.

Toward Mark's phone.

Moreno's officers restrained him immediately.

His reaction confirmed everything.

There was more.

Something even Vale feared.

Upload complete.

The terminal displayed:

MERIDIAN ARCHIVE RELEASED.

Mark expected relief.

Instead he felt the opposite.

The world had just learned one secret.

And Caitlyn had revealed another.

Reed was arrested.

Vale was detained.

Federal oversight teams took control of the facility.

Within hours news organizations began reporting explosive allegations involving infrastructure surveillance and government contracts.

Thomas Bennett's name appeared everywhere.

Hero.

Criminal.

Whistleblower.

Architect of Meridian.

Mark ignored all of it.

He drove back to Caitlyn.

When he entered the protected house, she ran into his arms.

He lifted her.

"You okay?"

"Yes."

Samantha stood nearby.

She looked exhausted.

Mark hugged her too.

She froze.

Then held him.

Daniel watched silently.

For one moment, they were simply family.

Broken.

Complicated.

But alive.

Margaret called that evening.

Mark almost refused.

Caitlyn asked him to answer.

Not because she wanted to speak to her mother.

Because she wanted to hear what Margaret said.

Mark put the phone on speaker.

Margaret's voice was quiet.

"I saw the news."

"So did everyone."

"Is Caitlyn safe?"

"Yes."

"Samantha?"

"Yes."

Margaret cried.

Mark did not know whether to believe the tears.

"Mark, I gave prosecutors everything."

"Why?"

"Because I want them protected."

"You should have protected them before."

"I know."

For once she did not argue.

Samantha stepped toward the phone.

"Mom."

Margaret inhaled.

"Samantha."

"Why did you do it?"

A long silence.

Then Margaret said, "Because I wanted a life that looked more important than the one I already had."

Samantha cried silently.

Margaret continued.

"And I kept telling myself I could fix everything before anyone got hurt."

Caitlyn looked at Mark.

Margaret whispered, "I'm sorry."

Samantha ended the call.

Nobody spoke.

Then Caitlyn asked Mark a question.

"Does sorry fix things?"

"No."

"Then why say it?"

"Because sometimes it's where fixing things starts."

Caitlyn considered that.

Then she went to sit beside Samantha.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But a beginning.

The following morning Margaret formally agreed to testify.

Charges against her remained.

Mark did not object.

Samantha entered therapy and agreed to cooperate with investigators.

Daniel began restructuring Bennett Development.

For the first time in years, the Bennett brothers spoke honestly about money, mistakes, and their father.

The house on Bennett Street remained sealed.

Mark did not know if they would ever return.

Caitlyn said she never wanted to sleep in that bedroom again.

He promised she would not have to.

For three nights they slept peacefully.

Then on the fourth morning, a package arrived.

No return address.

May you like

Inside was a blue lantern.

The glass was cracked.
