Chapter 13 - The Father in the Walls
The house became a sealed machine.
Steel shutters descended over the ground-floor windows. The alarm panel rejected every code. Mobile signals vanished under a jammer hidden somewhere inside the walls. Federal agents stationed outside saw the shutters close and attempted entry, but reinforced locks delayed them.
Alex, Emma, Teresa, Mateo, Catherine, Elena, and Fernanda were trapped inside. Grace remained in federal custody across the city.
Daniel's voice guided them through ceiling speakers.
"Go to the dining room. Leave all phones behind."
Alex refused. "Show yourself."
A camera turned toward him.
"I cannot yet."
Fernanda whispered that the voice sounded older but real. Catherine looked terrified rather than relieved.
In the dining room, seven envelopes waited at assigned seats. Each contained a private confession copied from the archive.
Teresa's envelope showed that Elena had accepted money from Daniel after disappearing, part of which paid for Mateo's education anonymously.
Elena's envelope contained evidence that Teresa had entered the Whitmore house under a false name.
Fernanda's envelope proved Catherine had once agreed to leave Amelia under Grace's legal guardianship to protect Alex.
Catherine's envelope contained Daniel's accusation that she had chosen the archive over him.
Alex's envelope held records of Grace secretly paying his first business debts, allowing him to believe he had succeeded alone.
Emma's envelope was empty except for one sentence: Your secret is not the child.
The method was pure Fairmont. Separate people with shame. Make them doubt one another. Control the room through what remained unsaid.
Emma stood. "Daniel, or whoever you are, this ends when we stop reading your envelopes."
The lights flickered. A hidden door opened behind the fireplace.
Daniel stepped into the room.
He was thinner, gray-haired, and scarred near his left ear. He walked with a limp. Alex recognized his eyes immediately.
For one impossible second, he was sixteen again, waiting for his father to explain why the east wing smelled of smoke.
Daniel did not embrace him. "I am sorry."
Alex struck him.
Daniel accepted the blow and lowered his head.
He confessed that he had staged his death to dismantle Fairmont without triggering the archive. Harold discovered him six months earlier and attempted to sell the entire system to an international buyer. Daniel killed Harold during a struggle at the boathouse, then assumed his identity to stop the sale.
"You threatened Catherine," Emma said.
"I rescued Catherine from Harold's remaining men. The video was designed to force Grace to expose the vault. Fernanda agreed to help until she believed I planned to sacrifice Elena."
Fernanda stared at him. "You told me there would be no gunfire."
"I was wrong."
"Victor almost died."
Daniel's silence answered for him.
He had become willing to risk others for the larger goal. He had become what Grace predicted.
Daniel said the Marrow Archive could not be destroyed while Grace retained a hidden recovery key. The key was not digital. It was a living memory encoded through phrases taught to Amelia as a child. Fernanda carried the final sequence without knowing it.
Catherine accused Daniel of imprisoning them. Daniel said one person in the house had been feeding Grace information and he needed to identify the traitor before agents entered.
The dining-room lights went out.
When emergency lamps came on, Catherine was holding a pistol.
Daniel looked older than his recorded image, but what unsettled Alex was the familiarity of his gestures. He still rubbed his thumb against his first finger before lying. He still glanced toward exits when emotional questions approached. Alex had inherited both habits. Seeing them in Daniel felt like discovering that part of his own body had been designed by someone who abandoned him.
Daniel asked about ordinary things as though twenty years could be crossed through small talk. Was the maple tree still alive? Did Alex still hate olives? Had Emma repaired the cracked window in the breakfast room? Alex answered none of it. He asked where Daniel had been on the nights Grace humiliated Teresa, when Fairmont threatened Mateo, when Fernanda learned cruelty as survival. Daniel said he had been gathering proof. Alex told him proof collected at the price of everyone else's suffering was another form of wealth stolen from them.
