Chapter 11 - The Man Who Borrowed Harold's Face
The discovery broke the investigation open and made it more dangerous.
If Harold had been dead for six months, the person who forged Alex's incapacity papers, moved the Marrow Reserve, attacked Victor, and abducted Catherine was an impostor with access to Harold's identity.
Federal agents reviewed surveillance from Vane's office. The man entering and leaving wore hats, glasses, and surgical masks whenever possible. Facial-recognition analysis produced no reliable match. His voice on phone calls had been digitally altered.
Grace appeared genuinely shaken when Ortiz showed her the dental report.
"Who knew enough to replace him?" Ortiz asked.
Grace stared through the interview-room glass. "Daniel."
Alex rejected the idea immediately. Grace insisted Daniel had mastered Fairmont's identities and escape routes. She claimed Daniel killed Harold after learning he had taken Catherine, then assumed Harold's role to drain the network from within.
"Your father always believed he could become the monster long enough to kill it," Grace said. "He never understood that monsters do not come with exits."
Catherine said Daniel would never harm innocent people or threaten Elena. Grace answered that Catherine had not seen him in fifteen years.
The only surviving witness who might know was Victor Hale. He woke from his coma the following afternoon.
Ortiz showed him photographs of Daniel, Harold, and several Fairmont associates. Victor pointed to Daniel.
"He came to the warehouse," Victor said. "He wore Harold's ring."
"When?"
"Three weeks ago."
Alex felt the room tilt.
Victor described a man older than Daniel's last known appearance, with a scar near his left ear and a limp. He spoke privately with Fernanda and removed boxes from the archive. Victor assumed Harold had sent him until the man used a phrase Daniel often repeated: Debt is only another word for ownership.
Fernanda admitted meeting the man but said she never saw his full face. He claimed to be Daniel and gave her recordings proving Grace lied. He instructed her to help move Catherine to the mill, supposedly for protection. When the plan failed, he disappeared.
"He used me," Fernanda said. "Just like she did."
Emma searched Daniel's video journals for the phrase Victor remembered. It appeared in a recording made by Daniel's father, not Daniel. Daniel had quoted it while condemning him.
The impostor may have studied the archive.
Nora analyzed the packet sent from the nursery. Hidden inside the audio file was a list of coordinates. One pointed to a storage unit rented under Catherine's former alias. Inside, agents found Daniel's clothes, passports bearing his photograph under six names, and recent newspapers with articles about Alex marked in red ink.
They also found a wall of photographs documenting Emma's movements for the past year.
The final photograph showed Emma outside her doctor's office.
The storage unit contained more than surveillance. A locked drawer held birthday gifts Daniel had purchased but never delivered: a compass for Alex's eighteenth birthday, a fountain pen for his law-school admission, a small wooden cradle made after Alex and Emma married. Each object was labeled with a date and a reason it could not be sent. Alex touched none of them. Love, he realized, did not become harmless simply because it was sincere. Daniel had loved him while choosing absence year after year.
Emma's medical visit had been routine, yet the photograph showed her leaving through a private side entrance. Whoever followed her had access to the clinic's schedule. Ortiz traced a recent payment to the receptionist from a Fairmont shell company. The receptionist claimed she only confirmed an appointment time and never knew Emma was pregnant. The explanation revealed how the network survived: most participants performed one small betrayal and refused to imagine the structure built from all of them.
On the back, someone had written: She has not told Alex about the baby.
Emma had learned she was pregnant six days earlier. She had told no one.
At the bottom of the storage box was a sealed letter addressed to her.
Emma opened it with gloves.
You are carrying the next primary beneficiary. Grace will never allow that child to be born free. Do not trust Catherine. Do not trust Daniel. Trust the woman who washed the blood from the blue tiles.
