Chapter 15 - THE EMPTY CRIB

The bank required Claire’s fingerprint.
No signature.
No identification beyond the key and her right thumb.
The vault had been opened under her name before she was two days old.
Inside were four objects.
An original birth certificate.
A small audio recorder.
A sealed vial containing a blood sample.
And a recent photograph of Samuel Reed.
The birth certificate listed Claire’s mother as Evelyn Crowe.
The father’s name had been covered by a strip of black ink.
The certificate was signed by Richard Hale and Margaret Hale.
Claire picked up the audio recorder.
A single file remained.
Samuel’s voice filled the private vault room.
“Claire, if you have reached this box, then Richard’s safeguards failed and Margaret has lost control.”
Claire closed her eyes.
The voice was older than the man she remembered.
He had recorded the message recently.
“I am alive,” Samuel said. “But the man you knew as your father was also a role I accepted to keep you hidden.”
Helen began crying beside her.
Samuel continued.
“Evelyn entrusted you to me because several powerful families wanted every child connected to her erased. Richard tried to help, but fear made him weak. Margaret tried to use the children to preserve her influence. Adrian survived because Evelyn saved him before she disappeared.”
Claire gripped the recorder.
“Your marriage to Ethan was not arranged. But it was not entirely an accident. Someone placed both of you at the charity lecture where you first met.”
Ethan stared at the floor.
“Ethan did not know. Neither did you. The purpose was to bring the last two branches of the Hale investigation together.”
Claire looked toward him.
Samuel’s voice softened.
“I am sorry that love became part of a plan neither of you chose.”
The recording crackled.
“Do not trust Adrian completely. He wants the truth, but pain has taught him to value revenge more than life.”
Another voice sounded in the background.
A woman.
“Samuel, we have to leave.”
Claire froze.
She knew that voice.
She had heard it only in old home videos.
It belonged to a woman declared dead when Claire was seven.
Her grandmother.
Helen’s mother.
Samuel spoke again.
“The blood sample in this box belongs to your biological father. Test it only when you are prepared for what the answer will do to Ethan.”
The recording ended.
Claire looked at the vial.
Ethan stood on the other side of the table, pale and silent.
“What does that mean?” he asked.
Before Claire could answer, Nora’s phone rang.
“Detective Vance.”
Her expression changed.
“When?”
She walked toward the vault door.
“Lock down the hospital. No one enters the maternity floor.”
Claire’s heart stopped.
“What hospital?”
Nora turned.
“The clinic where your twins’ delivery is scheduled.”
“Why?”
“A woman used forged credentials to access your medical file.”
“Who?”
Nora held up her phone.
The security image showed Margaret Hale walking through the clinic corridor.
She was not alone.
Beside her stood Rebecca.
And behind them, pushing an empty twin stroller, was Samuel Reed.
Claire stared at the photograph.
“My father is with Margaret?”
A second message appeared on Nora’s screen.
It came from Adrian.
DO NOT GO TO THE CLINIC.
THE WOMAN BESIDE MARGARET IS NOT REBECCA.
Claire’s phone vibrated.
An unknown number had sent a live video.
Two empty cribs stood in a dark hospital room.
A black bird had been painted above them.
Then a figure stepped in front of the camera.
The woman had Claire’s eyes.
She smiled slowly.
“Hello, sister.”
Behind Claire, the vault door slammed shut.

The lights went out.
And somewhere in the darkness, a newborn baby began to cry.
