THE NIGHT THE FLOOR TURNED RED / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - THE FIRE RETURNS

A fire broke out at the police evidence warehouse at 2:16 in the morning.

The original Hale ledger, Samuel’s cassette tapes and several files recovered from the estate were inside.

Sprinklers failed.

The night supervisor disappeared.

By sunrise, most of the evidence linking the foundation to illegal adoptions had been destroyed.

Nora believed someone inside the department had helped.

Margaret was moved to a federal detention facility.

Before the transfer, her transport convoy was attacked on an empty highway.

No officers were killed, but Margaret vanished.

Security footage showed a dark vehicle forcing the transport van off the road.

A man with a scar along his jaw opened the rear door.

He did not drag Margaret out.

She stepped toward him willingly.

“Adrian rescued her?” Ethan asked.

“Or took her,” Nora replied.

The distinction mattered.

Hours later, Claire received another call.

This time, Adrian spoke.

“You saw the photograph.”

His voice matched the recording from the hospital room.

“Where is Margaret?”

“Safe enough to answer questions.”

“You attacked the convoy.”

“I removed an obstacle.”

“You kidnapped Diane.”

“I protected her from the people who burned the evidence warehouse.”

“Where is Rebecca?”

“With our father.”

“Samuel?”

Silence.

“Let me speak to him.”

“You are not ready.”

Claire’s anger rose.

“Everyone keeps deciding what I am ready to know.”

“Because every truth puts another target on your children.”

“My children already have targets on them.”

“Then bring the bank key.”

“No.”

“Margaret’s key opens the final deposit box. Richard stored the original birth records inside.”

“Where?”

“You will receive instructions.”

“You attacked me at the hospital.”

“I warned you not to interfere.”

“You threatened Diane.”

“I frightened her. Margaret would have killed her.”

“You watched Margaret beat me.”

Adrian was silent for several seconds.

“I was there to obtain her confession.”

“You let it continue.”

“I did not expect her to strike you.”

“Neither did Luke. Everyone watched. Everyone has an excuse.”

Adrian’s voice became colder.

“You think Ethan saved you when he threw that vase. Ask him why he arrived at the exact moment the attack ended.”

Claire looked across the room.

Ethan stood near the window, unable to hear Adrian’s side of the call.

“What are you implying?”

“Ethan received my message fifteen minutes before he entered the house.”

Claire’s eyes moved to her husband.

“He knew Margaret had the papers.”

“He knew more than that.”

The call ended.

Claire demanded Ethan’s phone.

He resisted for one second.

Then he handed it over.

A deleted-message recovery tool found a text sent on the night of the attack.

Your mother is about to force Claire to sign. Come alone if you want to know what happened to Samuel Reed.

Ethan had received it seventeen minutes before entering the estate.

“You told me traffic delayed you,” Claire said.

“I panicked.”

“You knew I was in danger.”

“I didn’t know she had a weapon.”

“You still lied.”

“I thought whoever sent the message wanted me to arrive without police.”

“So you obeyed?”

“I called them from the car.”

“You didn’t call the police. The prepaid phone did.”

Ethan looked down.

“I tried. Someone blocked the signal.”

Claire stepped away.

The twins moved sharply inside her.

She pressed a hand against her stomach.

Nora’s phone began ringing.

She answered, listened and looked toward Claire.

“The bank key has been traced.”

“To where?”

“A private vault in New York.”

“Whose name is on the account?”

May you like

Nora’s expression became unreadable.

“Yours.”
