Chapter 12 - The Brother Who Stole the World

Lucian struck the glass wall with both palms.

“Cancel the rejection.”

The console displayed a five-minute reversal window, but only the firstborn could use it. Ethan watched his legal records disappear line by line. Bank accounts closed. Passports invalidated. Corporate ownership transferred into escrow. The Ashford name vanished from his profile.

Luke Cross appeared for the first time and began dying five minutes later.

Lucian’s composure shattered. “You do not understand what you have done.”

“I took away your inheritance.”

“You took away the lock on something worse.”

The trust fragmented into thousands of encrypted holdings. Naomi’s council gained access to identity recovery tools, but not central control. Protected individuals received private keys to their own records. Funds transferred to victim trusts and medical foundations.

Yet one portion did not fragment.

A black ledger labeled CROWN remained sealed.

Lucian pointed at it. “That ledger contains identities placed inside nuclear commands, intelligence agencies, and royal succession lines. Without firstborn authority, it will open to public release.”

Lydia studied the countdown beside CROWN.

Seventy-two hours.

“Can it be stopped?” she asked.

“Yes,” Lucian said. “Restore Luke’s identity and give me joint authority.”

“No,” Ethan replied.

Celeste moved to the console. “There may be another firstborn key.”

Lucian laughed. “There is not.”

Mara looked at Valerie.

Everyone followed her gaze.

Valerie was Lucian’s daughter, but if Lucian’s line had been recorded as secondary, she might hold emergency succession after Ethan.

The system scanned her pendant and displayed an unexpected result.

PATERNAL MATCH INCOMPLETE.

Valerie stared at the screen. “Lucian is not my father.”

Lydia went pale.

Lucian stopped moving.

Mara whispered, “You told us he was.”

“I believed he was,” Lydia said.

Ethan turned to her. “Who else?”

Lydia gripped the edge of the console. “Leon.”

Valerie’s breath caught.

The man who raised her may have been her biological father after all.

The system compared archived samples. A result appeared.

LEON COLE: PATERNITY PROBABILITY 99.98 PERCENT.

Valerie closed her eyes. Grief moved through her face in waves.

Lucian’s claim to her vanished. But the trust still recognized her as Covenant descendant through Lydia and the Ashford line.

Lucian stepped away from the glass. “Lydia deceived me.”

“She survived you,” Valerie said.

He touched a control on his side. The transparent wall lifted.

Naomi’s agents raised their weapons. Lucian held up empty hands.

“If you kill me, CROWN opens sooner.”

Ethan approached him. The resemblance between them was subtle but undeniable now: the same eyes, the same shape of the jaw, different lives carved into the same beginning.

“Why was I placed with the Ashfords?” Ethan asked.

Lucian answered softly. “Because our father feared you.”

“Who was he?”

“The founder, Adrian Cross.”

“He chose you to inherit.”

“No. He chose you. Firstborn, healthier, more stable. Our mother was told I was the only child because Adrian intended to raise you privately. But you developed a fever. He believed you would die, so he placed you as a control subject and trained me instead.”

Mara covered her mouth.

Lucian’s voice hardened. “Then you survived. Celeste purchased you for the Ashford replacement. Lydia later found your origin and planned to use you against me.”

Lydia said, “I planned to free both of you.”

“You never understood freedom,” Lucian replied.

The reversal window reached one minute.

Celeste begged Ethan to restore his identity long enough to seal CROWN. Naomi argued that no one should regain firstborn authority. Gabriel suggested restoring and immediately transferring the power to a temporary court.

Ethan looked at Valerie.

“What do you think?”

She wiped her tears. “All night people have told us what must be sacrificed. What do you want?”

No one had asked him that.

He looked at the name Luke Cross.

He did not want it. He did not want to rule a hidden system or become the founder’s heir. He wanted his choices to matter more than his origin.

“I want the truth to survive without becoming a weapon.”

Valerie nodded. “Then do not give one man the key. Not even yourself.”

The reversal window closed.

Luke Cross was erased.

Lucian lowered his head.

“You have sentenced millions to chaos.”

“No,” Ethan said. “I have given us seventy-two hours to find another way.”

An explosion rocked the chapel.

Sheriff Hollis and armed Cross loyalists breached the upper doors. Naomi’s agents returned fire. Victor dragged himself behind the altar. Celeste opened the estate armory passage.

Lucian ran toward the elevator.

Valerie blocked him.

“You are not leaving.”

He looked at her with cold fury. “You are not my daughter.”

“No,” she said. “I am Leon Cole’s daughter.”

She struck the emergency lock. Steel doors sealed around Lucian.

For the first time in his life, he was trapped inside his own system.

Then Lydia’s implant began beeping.

May you like

CROWN had activated her dead-man trigger.

She had less than ten minutes to live.
