Chapter 11 - The Choice at Midnight

Dr. Wren identified the gas as a sedative mixed with a respiratory toxin. It would not kill immediately, but the youngest children had less than an hour without treatment.
The antidote was stored in the clinic wing behind a biometric lock.
Naomi’s print failed.
Lydia’s failed.
Ethan placed his hand on the scanner.
The door opened.
Inside, shelves of medication surrounded a central cabinet bearing the code SUBJECT 214 MASTER ACCESS.
Everyone stared at him.
Lydia said, “Lucian built this facility around your identity.”
Ethan opened the cabinet and found enough antidote for the children. Agents and older teenagers moved bed to bed administering injections.
The boy 214-B began breathing more easily.
Naomi gave Ethan a handheld transmitter. “This station connects directly to the estate chapel. We can reach the trust through the maintenance tunnel, but Lucian has sealed it with blast doors.”
Ethan examined the master access panel. His biometric profile controlled those doors too.
He was not merely Lucian’s twin. He was the original administrative template for the entire replacement program.
Mara looked at him with horror and grief. “They took you from me and built a prison with your blood.”
Ethan could not absorb her sorrow. “Did you know Lucian had a brother?”
“No.”
“Would you have searched for me?”
“For the rest of my life.”
He wanted to believe her, but Valerie’s wounds stood between them.
They entered the maintenance tunnel with Naomi, six agents, Lydia, Valerie, Mara, and Dr. Wren. The rest stayed with the children. Ethan opened each blast door using his palm and voice.
At the final door, the system asked a question.
WHO NAMED YOU?
Ethan spoke Celeste’s name.
Access denied.
He tried Mara.
Denied.
He tried Lucian.
Denied.
The little boy’s words returned to him. The first child who escaped being nobody.
Ethan said, “I named myself.”
The door opened.
Beyond it lay the lower chapel passage. The estate trembled from distant explosions. Lucian’s forces and Celeste’s guards were fighting above.
They reached the server chamber minutes before midnight.
Gabriel stood at the authorization console. Celeste held a pistol on Naomi’s agents. Victor was awake but barely conscious.
“You brought the Unassigned Council here,” Celeste said to Ethan. “They will destroy every protected identity.”
Naomi raised her weapon. “Step away from the console.”
Valerie moved between them. “No one fires.”
Lucian appeared behind the transparent wall, applauding slowly.
“My family has finally assembled.”
He activated the hospital feed again. This time the bed was empty.
“You lied about Lydia,” Valerie said.
“I knew she would come to you once you were frightened enough.”
Lucian’s gaze shifted to his mother, then to Ethan.
“Brother.”
Ethan felt nothing but disgust.
Lucian explained that the midnight deadline was real. The trust’s governing authority renewed every seventeen years. Without authorization, the identity ledger would enter automatic succession and transfer to the oldest living Cross descendant.
Mara.
She stepped back. “I never agreed to that.”
“You gave birth,” Lucian said. “The covenant considers that agreement.”
The console lit.
Valerie placed her hand on the first scanner.
Gabriel placed his on the second.
Ethan stood before the third.
Naomi urged transfer to the council. Celeste urged preservation. Lydia urged the split protocol. Lucian urged central succession.
Every choice threatened someone.
Ethan looked through the glass at his twin.
“What happens if I reject my identity?”
Lucian smiled. “You discover who you were before Celeste purchased you.”
“And the trust fragments?”
“If Gabriel and Valerie accept.”
Gabriel nodded. “I will accept only long enough to divide it.”
Valerie looked at the image of the children on Naomi’s tablet. “So will I.”
Celeste grabbed Ethan’s arm. “The rejection will erase your citizenship, your property, your legal history. You will become no one.”
He looked at her. “You loved me when you thought I was useful.”
“I loved you when you were sick, angry, frightened, and impossible. Do not rewrite my love because I began with a sin.”
The words reached him.
But midnight was ten seconds away.
Ethan pressed his palm to the scanner.
“I reject all inherited identity and authority.”
The system asked for final confirmation.
Lucian’s smile vanished.
“Ethan, stop.”
It was the first time fear entered his voice.
Ethan confirmed.
The chapel went dark.
Across the world, the Continuity Trust began to break apart.
Then Ethan’s origin file opened on the central screen.
BIRTH NAME: LUKE CROSS.
TWIN STATUS: FIRSTBORN.
SUCCESSION PRIORITY: ABOVE LUCIAN CROSS.
Everyone turned toward Lucian.
Ethan had not rejected a lesser identity.
May you like
He had rejected the only identity with the power to command Lucian.
And the system had already begun erasing it.
