Chapter 5 - After The Silence

Twenty minutes after Connor found the folder, Frederick's pediatrician was on speakerphone.
Thirty minutes after that, Amy and Connor were inside a private examination room at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Frederick had mild dehydration and a viral infection.
Nothing life threatening.
The doctor said the fever should be monitored carefully.
Amy cried anyway.
She sat beside the hospital bed holding Frederick's tiny hand.
Connor stood near the window.
He had barely spoken.
His right hand hurt.
He stared at it.
The same hand that had struck his mother.
He felt ashamed.
Amy noticed.
"You stopped."
Connor looked at her.
"After I hit her."
"You stopped when I called you."
"I shouldn't have started."
Amy looked away.
Connor sat beside her.
"I'm sorry."
"For what part?"
He deserved that.
"All of it."
Amy laughed once, bitterly.
"That's a lot."
Connor lowered his head.
"I should have seen what she was doing."
"Yes."
The answer hurt because it was true.
Amy continued.
"Every time I told you your mother was crossing a line, you told me she was adjusting."
Connor remembered.
"She lost Dad."
"Eight years ago."
"I know."
"You said she was lonely."
"I know."
"You said she just wanted to feel included."
"I know."
Amy finally looked at him.
"And every time you defended her, I had to live with whatever she did next."
Connor had no defense.
A nurse entered, checked Frederick's temperature, and left again.
Amy adjusted the blanket.
Then Connor asked the question he feared.
"How long has she been treating you like this?"
Amy did not answer immediately.
"Since I was pregnant."
Connor closed his eyes.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I did."
He looked at her.
"You told me she criticized you."
"I told you she took my car keys because she didn't want me driving to my sister's baby shower."
Connor remembered Amy saying Teresa was being controlling.
He had called his mother.
Teresa said Amy had been tired and Teresa was worried about her driving.
Connor had believed her.
Amy continued.
"I told you she changed the nursery after I picked everything."
Connor remembered.
"I told you she called my doctor and tried to move appointments."
His stomach tightened.
"I told you she had access to our bank statements."
Connor looked up.
"What?"
Amy stared at him.
"She knew every time I bought something."
"I never gave her access to our account."
"You gave the family office access."
Connor understood.
His mother controlled the family office.
Amy's voice broke.
"She knew when I bought maternity clothes. She knew when I sent my sister money. She knew when I ordered takeout because I was too sick to cook."
Connor felt sick.
"And she used all of it."
Amy nodded.
"She started telling people I couldn't manage money."
Connor remembered casual comments at family dinners.
Amy's impulsive.
Amy's overwhelmed.
Amy needs structure.
He had laughed some of them off.
He wanted to punch himself.
Instead, he reached for Amy's hand.
She pulled it away.
Not cruelly.
But clearly.
"Don't fix this with one dramatic night."
Connor nodded.
"I won't."
The hospital door opened.
Hannah Brooks entered carrying the black folder.
Mason followed her.
Connor stood.
"What is he doing here?"
Mason stopped.
"I brought something."
Connor stared.
"You already brought enough."
Mason accepted the anger.
"I deserve that."
Amy looked at him.
"Did you sign those papers?"
"No."
"Did you ask other people to?"
Mason hesitated.
"Yes."
Connor stepped forward.
Hannah raised one hand.
"Connor."
He stopped.
Mason continued.
"Teresa paid off part of my gambling debt."
Amy stared.
Mason swallowed.
"She said I owed her."
"How much?" Connor asked.
"One hundred and eighty thousand."
Connor laughed in disbelief.
"So you helped her take my son for one hundred and eighty thousand dollars?"
"No."
"That's exactly what you did."
"I didn't know it involved Frederick at first."
"When did you know?"
"Yesterday."
"And you stayed."
Mason looked at the floor.
"Yes."
Connor turned away before anger took over again.
Hannah placed the folder on a table.
"I've reviewed enough to tell you this is serious."
Amy looked at her.
"Can Teresa take Frederick?"
"Not with these documents alone."
"Then what was she doing?"
Hannah opened the folder.
"Creating a record."
She showed them witness statements.
Amy appeared agitated.
Amy refused assistance.
Amy failed to provide an organized environment.
Amy allowed the child to cry for extended periods.
Amy displayed hostility toward family members.
Amy laughed without humor.
"She made me cook for twenty people while caring for a sick baby, then wrote down that the kitchen was messy."
Hannah nodded.
"That appears to be the strategy."
Connor looked at another page.
"What about my signature?"
"Probably forged."
"Probably?"
"We'll have it examined."
Mason spoke quietly.
"There are more."
Everyone turned.
"More what?"
"Documents."
"Where?"
Mason looked at Connor.
"Your mother's house."
Hannah's expression tightened.
"What kind of documents?"
"I only saw part of them."
"Tell us."
Mason swallowed.
"Bank records. Medical notes. Photos of Amy. Copies of texts. Reports from a private investigator."
Amy went still.
Connor stared.
"A private investigator followed my wife?"
Mason nodded.
"For months."
Connor's face changed.
Hannah stepped between them before he could move.
"Where are the records?"
"In Teresa's home office."
Connor reached for his coat.
Hannah stopped him.
"You are not going there."
"That's evidence."
"Which is exactly why you will not trespass into her house after striking her."
Connor stared at her.
She was right.
He hated that she was right.
Hannah looked at Mason.
"Can you legally access the office?"
Mason hesitated.
"I have a key."
"Why?"
"Because Teresa asked me to retrieve documents before."
Hannah closed the folder.
"Then you are going to tell me everything."
Mason sat.
For the next forty minutes, he described the trust.
The deadline.
The planned witness statements.
The private investigator.
The strange calls Teresa had made to a psychiatrist Mason had never met.
Then he said something that made Amy stop breathing.
"She wanted a recording."
Amy stared.
"Of what?"
"You losing control."
Amy looked at Connor.
Mason continued.
"She said the party wouldn't work unless you got angry in front of enough people."
Amy whispered, "That's why she kept pushing me."
Mason nodded.
"And Connor wasn't supposed to come home."
Hannah looked toward the folder.
"But he did."
Mason's expression darkened.
"Which gave Teresa something better."
Connor frowned.
"What?"
Mason looked at his injured hand.
May you like
Then he looked Connor directly in the eyes.
"She has video of you hitting her."
