Chapter 1 - Connor Came Home Early

The birthday cake hit the marble counter at exactly the same moment Connor Bradley realized his mother had lied to him.
He had entered through the back door quietly, balancing a white bakery box in one hand and a small shopping bag in the other. He had expected to surprise Amy.
Instead, he heard laughter.
Not ordinary birthday laughter.
Cruel laughter.
Teresa Bradley stood beneath the crystal chandelier in Connor's dining room, holding a champagne glass while nearly twenty relatives surrounded a table overflowing with shrimp, steak, wine, flowers, and untouched desserts.
She was smiling when she said it.
"His wife's only good for having babies and washing dishes. That's it."
The room erupted.
Connor stopped.
No one noticed him.
For three full seconds, he simply stood beside the kitchen doorway.
Then he looked through it.
Amy sat on a cheap plastic chair beside the sink.
Her light brown hair was tied in a messy ponytail. Her gray shirt was soaked near the waist. Grease streaked one sleeve. Dirty pots surrounded her.
Frederick was strapped against her chest in the baby carrier.
His cheeks were flushed.
His eyes were barely open.
Connor's shopping bag slipped from his fingers.
Inside it were fever patches, children's medicine, and a small stuffed bear he had bought on the drive home.
Teresa entered the kitchen.
She carried a stack of plates.
"You're still sitting?"
Amy lifted her exhausted eyes.
"Frederick's temperature went up again."
Teresa dropped the plates beside her.
Dirty water splashed across Amy's shirt.
"Move your ass. That coffee isn't gonna serve itself."
Amy flinched.
Then she saw Connor.
Her expression changed.
Not relief.
Shame.
That hurt him more than anything else.
Connor put the cake down.
Quietly.
Carefully.
He crossed the kitchen.
Amy opened her mouth.
"Connor."
He did not answer.
He unfastened Frederick from the carrier and lifted his son into his arms.
Frederick made a weak sound.
Connor pressed his lips to the boy's forehead.
Hot.
Far too hot.
Connor turned.
Teresa was still standing beside the sink.
"You made my sick son sit through this bullshit?"
Teresa rolled her eyes.
"Don't be dramatic. Children get fevers."
Connor stared at her.
Behind Teresa, relatives slowly gathered in the doorway.
No one laughed now.
Teresa pointed toward Amy.
"Your wife was supposed to have everything ready before the guests arrived. Instead she's been whining all day."
Something inside Connor broke.
He handed Frederick back to Amy.
Then he turned toward the enormous party table.
With one violent sweep of both arms, he sent trays, flowers, wineglasses, and plates crashing onto the floor.
Guests screamed.
Teresa gasped.
"What the hell is wrong with you?"
Connor faced her.
"You."
Teresa stepped toward him.
She raised her hand as if she intended to slap him.
Connor reacted first.
His palm struck her cheek.
The sound silenced the entire room.
Teresa stumbled and fell against a dining chair.
Connor moved toward her again.
His anger had gone beyond thought.
Amy screamed his name.
"Connor. Frederick."
He froze.
Frederick began crying.
That sound reached him when nothing else could.
Connor stopped.
His fists slowly opened.
Teresa remained on the floor, staring at him with a mixture of shock and hatred.
"You just destroyed yourself," she whispered.
Connor looked down at her.
Then something landed beside his shoe.
A folder.
Thick.
Black.
Mason stood several feet away.
His face had gone white.
The folder had slipped from beneath his arm during the chaos.
Documents covered the floor.
Connor looked at Mason.
"What is that?"
"Nothing."
Connor bent down.
Mason rushed forward.
"Connor, don't."
Too late.
Connor picked up the first page.
His anger disappeared.
Something colder replaced it.
The heading contained Amy's full legal name.
Below it were words Connor had never expected to see.
Petition for Temporary Guardianship of Frederick James Bradley.
Connor read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
Amy stepped closer.
"What is that?"
Connor did not answer.
Another document lay beneath it.
Emergency Household Incapacity Declaration.
Another.
Transfer of Trustee Authority.
Another.
Statement of Parental Neglect.
Connor looked at the signature at the bottom of the page.
His signature.
Except he had never signed it.
The dining room remained completely silent.
Connor looked at Mason.
"Why is my name on this?"
Mason swallowed.
Teresa pushed herself upright.
Her voice immediately hardened.
"Give me that folder."
Connor turned toward her.
"No."
"Those are private family documents."
"I'm the family."
Teresa laughed bitterly.
"You have no idea what you're holding."
Amy took Frederick from Connor again and moved closer.
She read several lines over his shoulder.
Her face drained of color.
The documents described her as emotionally unstable.
Neglectful.
Financially irresponsible.
Unable to care for her own son without supervision.
Amy whispered, "They've been building a case against me."
Connor stared at Mason.
"How long?"
Mason said nothing.
Connor took another page.
There were witness signature lines.
Several already had names beside them.
People standing inside the room.
Connor slowly turned.
His aunt avoided his eyes.
So did two cousins.
A family friend stared at the floor.
Connor felt sick.
The party had not been a birthday celebration.
It had been evidence collection.
His son's fever.
Amy's dirty clothes.
The kitchen mess.
The laughing relatives.
Everything suddenly looked staged.
Teresa stepped closer.
"You should be very careful before you accuse anyone."
Connor looked at her.
"You planned this."
"I protected this family."
"From my wife?"
"From weakness."
Amy's voice shook.
"You made me do everything today."
Teresa ignored her.
Connor looked again at the documents.
One page contained a date.
Frederick's birthday.
Today.
And beside the date was a sentence underlined in blue ink.
Trustee transition deadline.
Connor frowned.
"What happens today?"
For the first time, Teresa looked afraid.
Mason closed his eyes.
Connor turned toward him.
"What happens when Frederick turns one?"
Mason whispered, "Connor."
"Tell me."
Mason looked at Teresa.
Then at Amy.
Finally, he looked at Frederick.
"It isn't about Amy."
Connor's stomach tightened.
May you like
Mason pointed at the folder.
"It's about your father's trust."
