Chapter 13 - Christmas In March)

Alexander did not know how to celebrate Christmas in March.
The girls did.
Rules were created immediately.
No giant party.
No strangers.
No fancy chef.
Pajamas all day.
Pancakes for dinner.
Each person bought one gift for each other person, with a twenty-dollar limit.
Alexander protested the limit.
Valerie said,
"That's because you're bad at normal."
He accepted the criticism.
Henry brought a small artificial tree from storage.
Lauren visited with cookies.
Rebecca arrived carrying four books.
Daniel brought a board game the girls accused him of choosing for himself.
By six in the evening, the family dining room looked completely different.
Alexander had replaced the broken table.
Not with an expensive designer piece.
With a heavy oak table the girls chose.
The walls were repainted warm cream.
The old lock on the nearby pantry was gone.
A basket of fruit sat openly on the counter.
Alexander had considered demolishing the room after Christmas Eve.
The therapist advised against making every painful place disappear.
Sometimes reclaiming a place was stronger.
So they reclaimed it.
Camila put strawberries on the table.
Regina arranged napkins.
Sophie hung a paper snowflake.
Valerie placed five plates.
Then she added one small framed photograph of Isabel.
Alexander noticed.
"You okay with that?" Valerie asked.
He knelt.
"This was her house too."
Valerie smiled.
Dinner began.
Halfway through pancakes, the doorbell rang.
Alexander frowned.
"No guests."
Henry went to check.
He returned carrying a package.
"No return address."
Rebecca immediately became cautious.
"Give it to me."
Alexander opened the outer shipping envelope with gloves.
Inside was another envelope.
His name.
Then a smaller note.
I should have sent this sooner.
Brooke.
Vanessa's sister.
Rebecca opened the letter.
Brooke claimed she had found a flash drive inside Vanessa's apartment while collecting belongings under legal supervision.
She had been afraid to turn it over because it contained conversations involving herself.
Her attorney finally advised her to surrender it.
The drive was included.
Alexander stared.
"Tonight?"
Rebecca looked at the girls.
"Tomorrow."
Valerie heard.
"What is it?"
"Something for grown-ups."
She frowned.
"About Vanessa?"
Alexander did not lie.
"Yes."
Sophie put down her fork.
"Is it bad?"
"I don't know."
Regina said,
"You always say secrets get bigger when people hide them."
Alexander exchanged a look with Rebecca.
He did say that.
"We're not hiding it. We're choosing when to look."
Regina accepted the distinction.
After dinner, gifts were exchanged.
Alexander received four things.
A tie covered in cartoon dogs.
A mug that said DAD in hand-painted letters.
A photograph of the five of them making pancakes.
And from Sophie, a small plastic baseball bat.
Alexander stared.
Sophie giggled.
"It's soft."
He squeezed it.
Foam.
"What am I supposed to do with this?"
She pointed at the table.
"Nothing."
Everyone laughed.
Alexander laughed hardest.
Late that night, after the girls slept, Rebecca connected Brooke's flash drive to an isolated laptop.
Audio files.
Messages.
Scanned documents.
One video.
The video showed Vanessa and Cynthia sitting in Alexander's office.
Date stamp.
Six months before Christmas.
Vanessa held a legal pad.
Cynthia said,
"What if he never gives you access?"
Vanessa answered,
"Then I make him choose."
"Between you and the kids?"
"Exactly."
Cynthia laughed.
"He'll choose them."
Vanessa's expression remained calm.
"Not if they become the reason his life is impossible."
Alexander stopped the video.
Rebecca looked sick.
He pressed play again.
Vanessa described a strategy.
Create behavioral problems.
Make the girls appear unstable.
Encourage conflict.
Suggest boarding school.
Document Alexander's temper.
Cynthia asked,
"What if he doesn't lose his temper?"
Vanessa smiled.
"Everyone has a breaking point."
The bat.
The dining room.
The bread on the floor.
Alexander understood fully now.
Christmas Eve had not only been cruelty.
It had also been a trap.
Vanessa expected him home at nine.
She intended the girls to remain in the dining room.
She planned to provoke him.
Cynthia would record.
If he reacted violently, Vanessa gained leverage.
If he did not, she still intended to move the children two days later.
Alexander sat back.
Rebecca said,
"This destroys her defense."
He looked toward the ceiling.
"Use it."
"The plea offer changes now."
"Good."
Rebecca paused.
"What do you want?"
Alexander thought carefully.
Months ago, he would have answered immediately.
Maximum sentence.
Public humiliation.
Everything.
Now he asked a different question.
"What keeps the girls from testifying?"
Rebecca nodded slowly.
"We can make that the priority."
"Then do that."
The final agreement took six weeks.
Vanessa pleaded guilty to multiple financial crimes and child endangerment charges.
She admitted forging Alexander's signatures.
She admitted withholding food as punishment.
She admitted falsifying educational and medical records.
She agreed to restitution.
She surrendered claims under the prenuptial agreement.
She received a substantial prison sentence followed by restrictions that prevented contact with the girls.
Cynthia pleaded guilty to fraud-related charges and received a lesser sentence for cooperation.
Marcus Vale faced separate prosecution.
Brooke avoided incarceration after providing evidence, though her role remained part of the official record.
Alexander did not celebrate the sentencing.
The girls did not attend.
When reporters requested a statement, he released three sentences.
My daughters deserve privacy, safety, and childhoods not defined by what happened to them. The legal process has reached its conclusion. Our family is moving forward.
Then he took the girls for ice cream.
Camila ordered two flavors.
She asked,
"Can I really get two?"
Alexander smiled.
"You can get three."
Valerie groaned.
"Daddy."
"What?"
"Normal."
He corrected himself.
"Two is excellent."
They laughed.
That should have been the ending.

But rebuilding a family does not end when the villain receives consequences.
Sometimes the hardest chapter begins afterward.
