Chapter 6 - Ninety Seconds Beneath the Ashford Foundation

Mara called the hospital while Daniel searched the observation room for another exit.

The nurse on the monitor adjusted Rose’s intravenous line. Clara pounded on the screen as if her grandmother could hear.

“Security is moving,” Mara said. “They are two floors away.”

The nurse lifted the syringe.

Then Rose opened her eyes.

She seized the nurse’s wrist with surprising strength, twisted, and drove the emergency call button into the woman’s throat. The syringe fell. Hospital officers rushed in and restrained the attacker.

Clara’s knees gave way.

Rose was alive.

The monitor feed went black.

Daniel found a hidden rack of recording equipment behind a false wall. Every camera in Rose’s hospital room, the Bell house, and the bookstore apartment fed into the system.

“This is not Victoria’s emergency setup,” he said. “This has been here for years.”

Mara removed a hard drive. “Which means someone expected Clara to return to these tunnels.”

On a desk lay a guest list for the upcoming gala. Several names had red circles around them: Elias Hart, Senator Malcolm Vale, Judge Celeste Rowan, Owen Mercer, and Clara Bell.

Clara’s name was written despite her having no invitation.

Beside it was a note.

SUBJECT WILL SEEK HART. INTERCEPT BEFORE MIDNIGHT.

Daniel folded the page. “They know Evelyn’s plan.”

“They know part of it,” Clara said. “They do not know I found the remote.”

Mara looked at her. “That remote disables the ledger alarm for ninety seconds. It may also access the ballroom system. We cannot know what else it controls.”

Clara turned it over. The casing had been modified by hand. Inside the battery compartment, she found a string of tiny numbers.

An address on the foundation’s internal network.

At the bookstore, she connected the remote to an old tablet through a homemade cable. A menu appeared with four options: VAULT, CAMERAS, SCREEN, and FAILSAFE.

The screen option explained how Clara would later expose Victoria at the gala.

The failsafe option was locked.

Daniel wanted to go directly to federal authorities. Mara argued that the evidence on the flash drive was incomplete and possibly planted. Both agreed that entering the vault before the gala would trigger a response.

Clara disagreed with both.

“My mother chose the gala because she wanted the evidence public,” she said. “But she also left us a map in the tunnel. She is telling us to go now.”

The blue crown symbol led to a maintenance shaft beneath the foundation’s original clinic. At dusk, Mara secured forged utility credentials. Daniel carried climbing rope, a camera, and a compact radio scanner. Clara carried the remote and key.

They entered through a storm drain two streets from Ashford Park.

The tunnels narrowed as they moved south. Some walls had been sealed with new concrete. Others bore faded murals painted by children: suns, houses, dogs, families holding hands. Clara wondered how many of those children had known they were being watched.

At the final junction, they found a steel door with no visible handle.

Clara pressed VAULT on the remote.

A countdown appeared.

90.

The door released.

They stepped into a circular chamber beneath the new ballroom complex. The room was colder than the tunnel. Shelves rose from floor to ceiling, filled with paper ledgers, film reels, medical files, and locked metal boxes.

At the center stood a black safe.

87.

The brass key opened the first lock.

Daniel entered a code from Evelyn’s letter into the second.

74.

The safe door swung open.

Inside lay a red leather ledger and a small portable projector.

Mara photographed every shelf while Daniel copied the ledger’s first pages. Clara opened it.

The entries began twenty years earlier. Each child had a number, a birth name, a replacement name, and a financial value. Beside some entries was the word PLACED. Beside others, RETURNED. A third category appeared again and again.

MIRROR.

Clara found her mother’s name in the margin beside Project Aurora.

Then she found her own.

BELL, CLARA E. — MIRROR STATUS UNRESOLVED.

Across from it was another name.

ASHFORD, VIOLET — MIRROR ACTIVE.

Clara whispered the name. “Violet.”

Daniel turned pale. “Victoria had a daughter named Violet. She died as an infant.”

The countdown reached 41.

The portable projector powered on by itself.

A woman appeared against the vault wall.

Evelyn.

“If Clara has reached this room,” the recording said, “then Victoria has begun the final transfer. Do not remove the red ledger. It is bait. The real ledger is embedded in the ballroom foundation beneath the chairman’s table.”

Daniel cursed softly.

Mara examined the red book. “Then what is this?”

“A list of everyone Victoria wanted exposed,” Evelyn said on the recording. “Some are guilty. Some are witnesses. If this book becomes public without context, innocent people will die.”

The countdown reached 22.

Clara turned to the shelves. “What are we supposed to take?”

Evelyn’s image looked almost directly at her.

“The film marked Seven.”

Daniel found a reel with a blue seven on its case.

14.

They ran for the door.

At 3 seconds, Mara crossed the threshold.

At 2, Daniel followed.

At 1, Clara heard a child crying behind the shelves.

She stopped.

The door began to close.

“Clara!” Daniel shouted.

She turned toward the sound.

A small hand appeared through a gap in the back wall.

The steel door slammed shut between Clara and the others.
