Chapter 11 - Platform 13

Grayhaven Central Station had only twelve public platforms.

Platform 13 existed beneath them.

The entrance was hidden behind a maintenance gate at the end of an abandoned postal tunnel. According to Hart, the platform had been built during the Cold War as an evacuation route for city officials. The Ashford family later converted it into a private transport line connecting the foundation, the river docks, and an airfield outside the state.

Federal agents divided into teams. Some remained at the gala to secure Victoria, Owen, and the data cylinders. Others moved toward the station.

Clara insisted on going.

Mara objected. Daniel objected louder. Hart said nothing until Clara held up the remote.

“The manifest lists me,” she said. “The system may need my identity to stop the transfer.”

Daniel crouched in front of her. “You are not responsible for fixing what adults built.”

“No,” Clara said. “But I may be the only one who can.”

They reached the postal tunnel with thirty-one minutes until midnight.

The air smelled of dust and electricity. Old mail carts stood abandoned along the walls. The farther they descended, the newer the security became: fresh cameras, biometric locks, pressure sensors hidden beneath concrete.

Clara used the remote to loop the camera feed for ninety seconds at a time.

At the final gate, they found Police Commissioner Adrian Locke waiting with six armed officers.

Mara raised her weapon. “Step away from the door.”

Locke smiled. “Detective Quinn, you have been suspended for unauthorized operations.”

“By you?”

“By people who understand how much damage one frightened child can cause.”

Daniel moved slightly in front of Clara.

Locke’s officers aimed their rifles.

Then every radio in the tunnel crackled with a child’s voice.

“Commissioner Locke is not authorized.”

The officers looked at one another.

The voice continued, calm and artificial. “Remove him from the platform.”

Locke went pale.

One officer lowered his rifle. “Who is speaking?”

“Violet Ashford.”

The lights went out.

Gunfire exploded in the dark.

Clara dropped to the floor. Daniel pulled her behind a mail cart. Mara fired twice toward Locke’s muzzle flash. When emergency lights returned, two officers were wounded, Locke was gone, and the gate stood open.

Beyond it waited a black train with no markings.

Its windows were covered. Its engine hummed without smoke.

They boarded the rear carriage.

Inside were rows of empty seats and metal lockers labeled with children’s names. Some contained clothes. Others held passports, medication, and sealed identity packets.

Clara found one labeled CLARA ASHFORD.

Inside was a passport bearing her photograph and a birth date one day earlier than her real one. The listed parents were Victoria and Thomas Ashford.

Daniel stared at it. “They planned to make you Violet.”

At the next carriage, they found Rose strapped to a medical bed. She was unconscious but breathing. A monitor displayed a sedative level.

Clara cut the restraints while Mara called for medics.

Rose opened her eyes briefly.

“Evelyn,” she whispered.

“Where?” Clara asked.

Rose pointed toward the front of the train.

Daniel stayed with her. Clara and Mara continued.

The third carriage held June and four other children behind a glass partition. June pressed both hands to the window.

“The white-coat woman brought us,” she said through an intercom. “She said she had to choose.”

“Choose what?” Clara asked.

“Which mirror gets to leave.”

The carriage doors locked behind them.

A screen illuminated above the glass.

Evelyn Bell appeared live.

She wore the white coat from the ballroom footage. Her face was thinner, older, but unmistakably real.

Clara stepped toward the screen. “What happened on my seventh birthday?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“You gave me a paper crown with seven blue stars. One was upside down because queens need secret maps.”

Clara’s chest tightened.

Her mother was alive.

“Where are you?”

“In the engine carriage.” Evelyn looked over her shoulder. “Clara, listen carefully. The train is programmed to leave at midnight. If it crosses the river tunnel, the records will upload to a private server and every child aboard will receive a new legal identity. Their old identities will be erased.”

“Stop it.”

“I cannot. Violet controls the system.”

“Who is Violet?”

Evelyn hesitated.

The train doors sealed throughout the platform.

A countdown began.

2:00.

1:59.

Evelyn whispered, “She is the reason Victoria slapped you.”
