Chapter 7 - The Selection

The apartment had not been breached by force.

One of the guards had opened the door.

By the time Daniel arrived, the guard was gone, Frank was unconscious in the hallway, and Rose was holding a towel to a cut above Hannah’s eye. Lily remained in Hannah’s arms.

Adrian had entered, spoken to Hannah for less than three minutes, and left without touching the baby.

“He could have taken her,” Hannah said. “He didn’t.”

“What did he want?”

“To tell me you were lying.”

Daniel knelt beside her. “About what?”

“He said our marriage was arranged.”

Daniel stared.

Hannah continued. “He said the internship where we met, the charity dinner, even the broken elevator you helped me out of were planned by Halcyon.”

Frank groaned from the sofa. Rose pressed ice to his temple.

Daniel remembered the elevator. Hannah had been trapped between floors at the Mercer Foundation building. Daniel had climbed through the service hatch and stayed with her until technicians opened the doors. They had laughed about it for years.

Frank looked away.

“You knew,” Daniel said.

“I knew Victoria got Hannah the internship,” Frank admitted. “I thought she was helping.”

Hannah’s eyes filled with anger. “Helping me meet her son?”

Frank whispered, “She said Daniel needed someone good.”

Daniel stood and called Victoria. She answered on the first ring.

“Did you arrange my meeting with Hannah?”

A long pause.

“Yes.”

Hannah closed her eyes.

Daniel felt sick. “Why her?”

“Because she was not part of their world. Because she had the courage to refuse you. Because I believed you would love her.”

“And because of her eggs?”

Victoria did not answer.

That silence was enough.

The Marlowe Center had cataloged Hannah years before. She possessed traits the Custodians valued and a genetic profile linked to one of their programs. Victoria had placed her near Daniel.

Love had happened afterward, but the door had been opened deliberately.

Hannah took Lily into the bedroom and locked the door.

Daniel did not follow. He knew any promise he made would sound contaminated.

Priya arrived with new information. She had identified the missing guard as Marcus Dane, a former Mercer security contractor dismissed by Jonathan eight years earlier. Dane had received payments from a foundation connected to the stolen protection fund.

“Adrian has people inside your family’s system,” Priya said.

“Or the Custodians do.”

Daniel showed her a message Adrian had sent after leaving the apartment. It contained coordinates and a time: midnight.

The location was an abandoned maternity hospital outside the city.

Come alone.

Priya advised police surveillance. Daniel agreed publicly and planned privately to arrive before them.

At eleven, Hannah came out of the bedroom. Lily slept against her shoulder.

“You’re going,” she said.

“Yes.”

“Then hear this before you leave. I don’t know whether our first meeting was arranged. I know what happened afterward. You stayed awake with my father during his surgery. You sold your favorite car to fund my mother’s treatment when insurance failed. You held my hand through thirty hours of labor. Those things were real.”

Daniel swallowed.

“But real love does not survive hidden decisions,” she continued. “Bring me the truth, even if it destroys us.”

He kissed Lily’s forehead and left.

The abandoned hospital stood behind rusted gates, its windows dark. Daniel entered through the emergency wing. Battery lanterns marked a path along peeling walls to the old nursery.

Adrian waited beside a row of empty bassinets.

Up close, the resemblance was more unsettling. He had Daniel’s eyes but none of his softness. A scar crossed his jaw, and his left hand bore burn marks.

“You came early,” Adrian said.

“So did you.”

Adrian smiled faintly. “We share that.”

“Why did you enter the apartment?”

“To see Lily.”

“Stay away from her.”

“I would never harm her.”

“You threatened to take her.”

“I threatened the people who turned her into a key.”

Daniel stepped closer. “Was your daughter stillborn?”

Adrian’s face changed.

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Do not use kindness as a weapon.”

“I mean it.”

Adrian looked away. “Her name was Mira. Elena delivered her in a hidden clinic. The Custodians said she was genetically unfit. They refused to register her birth. She died before sunrise.”

“Why do you think Lily was stolen from you?”

“Because Mira’s blood was used to activate the trust. Your daughter’s records were placed over hers. On paper, my dead child became Lily Mercer for eight minutes. Then the records were switched back, leaving a verified Vale heir in the system.”

Daniel understood. Elena had not switched babies. She had switched identities.

“Why?”

“To trigger the Cradle Clause before Victoria could claim sole control.”

Adrian handed him a photograph. It showed Elena holding two newborns years apart. One was Mira. The other infant wore a hospital cap marked H.A.

“H.A.?” Daniel asked.

“Hannah Alvarez.”

Daniel looked up.

Adrian’s voice was quiet. “Hannah was born at the Marlowe Center. Frank and Rose did not adopt her through any legal agency. Elena gave her to them.”

Daniel felt the floor shift beneath him.

“Whose child is she?”

Adrian pointed toward the dark observation window.

A woman stood behind the glass.

Elena stepped into the nursery.

“She is Jonathan Mercer’s daughter,” Elena said.
