Chapter 14 - Why Lily Was Born

Daniel called Hannah until her phone went directly to voicemail.
The security footage showed her leaving calmly with Lily and Elena. No force. No struggle. Rose admitted Hannah had asked her to keep Daniel away for one hour.
“She said she was protecting you,” Rose whispered.
Daniel almost broke the phone in his hand.
Adrian arrived after hearing Hannah was missing. Instead of anger, he brought information. He had traced Jonathan’s legal team to an abandoned Mercer research facility outside the city.
“They are gathering everyone,” Adrian said. “Jonathan, Hannah, Elena, maybe Mira.”
“Why?”
“Final verification.”
Priya found the answer in the trust charter. Once both descendant lines and their heirs were physically verified, the trust could be permanently rewritten by unanimous consent of the living claimants.
Jonathan needed Daniel and Adrian.
Hannah had gone to force the meeting.
They entered the research facility through an underground loading bay. Federal agents waited nearby, but Daniel asked them to hold position until Lily and Mira were located.
Inside the central laboratory, Jonathan stood beside a biometric console. Hannah held Lily near a glass wall. Elena waited with Claire Voss and a small dark-haired girl.
Mira.
Adrian stopped breathing.
The girl hid behind Claire’s coat.
Jonathan raised his hands. “No weapons. No one is trapped.”
Adrian ignored him and knelt several feet from Mira.
“My name is Adrian,” he said gently. “I think you know who I am.”
Mira studied his face.
“Are you angry?” she asked.
“All the time,” he admitted. “But not at you.”
She considered this honest answer. Slowly, she stepped from behind Claire.
Daniel looked at Hannah. “Why did you leave?”
“Because you would have tried to stop me.”
“Stop you from what?”
“Ending the trust.”
She handed him a journal written by Jonathan. Months earlier, Hannah had discovered one of his letters hidden in Frank’s workshop. It directed her to the lake house. Jonathan revealed her true parentage and the existence of a stored embryo created from her donated egg and Daniel’s genetic material.
Daniel stared at her. “We never stored an embryo.”
“You did, without knowing. During your surgery five years ago, the clinic retained a sample. Halcyon created embryos to preserve the line.”
Lily had been conceived naturally, Hannah insisted. But during early pregnancy, doctors claimed the fetus had failed. Jonathan showed Hannah evidence that the diagnosis was falsified and that Victoria’s hospital planned to terminate the pregnancy quietly.
“I agreed to monitoring because I thought it was the only way to keep Lily alive,” Hannah said. “I signed that form as a decoy, making them believe I would accept their embryo. I never did.”
“Why hide it from me?”
“Jonathan said the Custodians monitored you. He said any change in your behavior would expose the plan.”
Daniel looked at his father. “You made my wife lie to me.”
“I gave her a way to save your child.”
“You gave her your fear.”
Jonathan’s face tightened.
The biometric console required four adults: Daniel, Adrian, Hannah as the legally recognized mother of Lily, and Claire as Mira’s current guardian. If they agreed, Halcyon could be converted into a victim restitution foundation and the hereditary clauses abolished.
It was the outcome they wanted.
Too easy.
Priya’s voice came through Daniel’s earpiece. “Do not activate yet. We found a hidden transfer protocol.”
Jonathan heard the whisper. “What did she say?”
Daniel stepped away from the console.
Priya explained that rewriting the trust would transfer operational control to the person who had initiated the verification session.
Jonathan.
Hannah stared at him. “You said control would dissolve.”
“It will, after the assets are secured.”
“No,” Daniel said.
Jonathan’s calm broke. “Do you know what happens if governments seize those accounts? Victims will receive nothing. Politicians will bury the evidence. I need temporary control.”
“You always need temporary control,” Elena said. “That is how Halcyon survived.”
Jonathan moved toward the console.
Adrian blocked him.
Mira cried out.
At that moment, alarms sounded. Screens across the laboratory displayed a remote intrusion. Samuel Creed, operating through a hidden bank server before his arrest, had scheduled an automatic asset transfer if the trust was rewritten.
The money was moving.
Eighteen million first.
Then hundreds of millions.
Daniel saw only one way to stop it: destroy the lineage keys stored in the console. Doing so would freeze every account for years and erase all automatic claims, including Lily’s and Mira’s inheritance.
Jonathan shouted, “Do not touch it!”
Daniel lifted a metal chair.
He looked at Hannah.
She nodded.
He smashed the console.
Sparks erupted. The screens went black. The transfer stopped at 18,000,001 dollars.
One extra dollar had escaped.
Priya traced it to an account created that morning in Lily’s name.

The account holder was not Daniel, Hannah, Victoria, or Jonathan.
It was Rose Alvarez.
