Chapter 12 - What Grace Was Running From)

Richard Carlisle told them everything he knew.
Thomas Mercer had entered Vale International as a young analyst.
He was brilliant.
Ambitious.
Patient.
He built Project Winter as a hidden network that copied internal transactions, executive communications, trust structures, and blackmail material.
Not to expose corruption.
To control it.
Grace fell in love with him before she discovered what he was doing.
By then she was pregnant.
"When Thomas's apartment burned," Richard said, "Grace believed someone had tried to kill him."
"But he survived," Noah said.
"Yes."
"And faked his death."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because the authorities were getting close to Project Winter."
Noah felt sick.
"So he let Mom think he was dead?"
"For a while."
"Then?"
"He contacted her."
"When?"
"After you were born."
Noah stood.
"He knew about me."
Richard nodded.
"He wanted you."
"Why?"
"Vale blood."
Noah laughed sharply.
"I'm not a prize."
"To Thomas you were leverage."
Richard explained that Grace changed her name and disappeared with Noah.
Years later she learned Thomas was still operating through intermediaries.
Victor's theft had accidentally exposed parts of Thomas's network.
Grace contacted Marcus.
Then Richard.
"Why you?"
"Because I helped Thomas move money before I understood what Project Winter really was."
Vanessa stood outside the room listening through the open door.
Her face broke.
Richard saw her.
"I'm sorry."
Vanessa walked away.
Noah remained.
"What happened at Lake Ashcroft?"
"Grace wanted proof."
"You met her."
"Yes."
"Then?"
"Someone followed me."
"Thomas?"
"I never saw."
"The fire?"
"The boathouse was set on fire after Grace entered the underground room."
Noah remembered Vanessa's words.
I didn't know she was inside.
Richard continued.
"I thought Grace had died."
"But she didn't."
"No."
"How do you know?"
"Marcus pulled her out through the tunnel."
Noah's chest tightened.
"Marcus saved her."
"Yes."
"Then why didn't she come back to me?"
Richard's eyes filled with shame.
"Because Grace believed Thomas would come for you if he knew she was alive."
Noah could barely speak.
"So she chose to leave me."
"No."
Richard shook his head.
"She chose to let you believe she was gone because she thought that was the only way to keep Thomas from using you."
"Where did she go?"
"I don't know."
"Marcus knows."
"Probably."
Noah walked toward the door.
Richard called after him.
"Noah."
He turned.
"Your mother was planning to come back."
"When?"
"Your fifteenth birthday."
The room went silent.
"The ball," Noah whispered.
Richard nodded.
"She designed the trust transfer as a signal. If she was still alive, she would know you had become visible. She planned to return before Thomas could reach you."
Noah's eyes burned.
"Then where is she?"
Richard had no answer.
Outside, Vanessa sat against the hallway wall.
Her expensive coat lay beside her.
She looked nothing like the woman in the red gown.
Noah stopped.
She looked up.
"I became exactly the kind of person my father warned me about."
Noah said nothing.
She continued.
"He used to tell me that powerful rooms make cruelty easy because nobody wants to be the first person to object."
Noah remembered the guests laughing.
"You didn't object."
"No."
"You started it."
"I know."
He could have walked away.
Instead he sat opposite her.
"Why?"
Vanessa cried quietly.
"Because I thought if Adrian became chairman, we'd finally be untouchable."
"Nobody is."
"I know that now."
Noah looked at his bandaged hand.
"Good."
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
"Then don't ask."
"I won't."
Noah stood.
His phone rang.
Marcus.
He answered.
"Where are you?"
Marcus sounded breathless.
"Noah, listen carefully. Richard is telling you only what he believes."
"You saved my mother."
Silence.
"You pulled her out of Lake Ashcroft."
"Yes."
"Where is she?"
"I don't know anymore."
"What does that mean?"
"I hid her for three years."
Noah gripped the phone.
"Three years?"
"Then she vanished again."
"Why?"
"Because she found Thomas."
Noah stopped.
"Alive?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
Marcus hesitated.
May you like
Then said:
"Inside Vale International."
