Chapter 3 - Northstar Capital

Evelyn’s father had never trusted Richard.

Samuel Hart had built a private investment firm from nothing. He respected intelligence but distrusted charm, especially when charm arrived without humility.

Before his death, he placed most of his fortune in a private trust controlled by Evelyn.

Richard knew she had inherited money.

He did not know how much.

Evelyn had never hidden the trust, but she had never discussed its full value. Richard assumed it contained a few properties and conservative investments.

In reality, the trust was worth nearly four hundred million dollars.

Evelyn had rarely touched it. She wanted her career to be judged by her decisions, not her inheritance.

Now that inheritance offered her a way to protect Hartwell.

Maya created Northstar Capital, a private investment company with Evelyn as its sole owner. The structure was legal, quiet and intentionally difficult to connect to her name.

Over the next two months, Northstar began purchasing Hartwell shares.

Several members of Richard’s extended family were eager to sell. They enjoyed receiving dividends but had little interest in the company. Two retired uncles sold their holdings immediately. A cousin living in Europe accepted Northstar’s offer without asking who stood behind it.

Institutional investors also began losing patience with Richard’s spending. Northstar bought their shares at a generous but reasonable price.

Each transaction increased Evelyn’s control.

Richard noticed that an unknown company was buying Hartwell stock, but he was not concerned.

“Probably some investment fund looking for a board seat,” he said during breakfast.

Evelyn kept her expression calm.

“Does that worry you?”

“Why would it? The Mercer trust still controls the largest block.”

“What if the trust sells?”

Richard laughed.

“My mother would never allow it.”

He was wrong.

Victoria Mercer cared about status more than business. She had never forgiven Hartwell for reducing the extravagant family allowances after Evelyn’s restructuring.

When Northstar offered her a price significantly above market value, Victoria agreed to sell part of the trust’s holdings.

She did not tell her son.

She believed she was making a private financial decision that Richard would never discover.

With every purchase, Northstar moved closer to control.

Evelyn continued attending board meetings, reviewing contracts and sleeping beside a husband who was planning a future without her.

The contradiction exhausted her.

One night, she waited until Richard was asleep before entering his home office.

She was not searching for evidence of the affair. She already had enough.

She was searching for information about the fraudulent consulting company.

Richard’s computer was open.

On the screen was a message from Celeste.

Once she is gone, you can finally take full control. No more asking permission. No more pretending she matters.

Richard had replied less than a minute later.

She won’t be a problem much longer.

Evelyn felt the room grow cold.

She photographed the conversation.

Then she found a draft of a separation agreement prepared by Richard’s personal attorney.

The agreement transferred Evelyn’s voting rights, removed her from Hartwell and forced her to surrender any claim connected to the marriage.

Richard intended to present it after weakening her position.

He believed she would be too humiliated by the affair to fight publicly.

Evelyn returned the computer exactly as she had found it.

She went upstairs and stood beside the bedroom door.

Richard was sleeping peacefully.

For the first time, Evelyn understood that the marriage she was trying to save had already ended.

The only question was whether Richard would destroy Hartwell on his way out.
