Chapter 7 - Seventy-Two Hours

Protocol Icarus created a seventy-two-hour protective window.
During that period, no one could transfer the founding trust, unlock the frozen accounts, or delete preserved evidence. After seventy-two hours, an independent legal panel would review the activation.
If Eleanor failed to prove fraud, the board could accuse her of intentionally damaging Mercer Meridian.
If she succeeded, Harrison’s control would collapse.
The missing phone and ring made the deadline more dangerous.
Someone now possessed Eleanor’s authentication tools.
Jonah arrived at the mansion twenty minutes after the blackout. He entered through the service entrance with two cybersecurity agents and a portable evidence system.
“You look terrible,” he told Eleanor.
“You disappeared.”
“So did Victor.”
“Is he safe?”
“I don’t know.”
“You sent the photograph.”
“Yes. It came through Victor’s emergency channel.”
“Where was it taken?”
“We’re still analyzing it.”
Detective Quinn joined them in the library.
“Harrison and Chloe are being questioned separately. We found a device near the broken window that disrupted the mansion’s electrical system.”
“Who entered during the blackout?” Eleanor asked.
“No one visible on the external cameras.”
“There are staff tunnels beneath the east wing,” she said.
Quinn looked surprised.
“The mansion was built in 1928. The original owners used service passages.”
“Who knows about them?”
“Harrison. Chloe. Several maintenance employees.”
“And you.”
Eleanor met her gaze.
“Yes.”
Quinn did not apologize for the implication.
“Until we know who took the phone, everyone remains a possibility.”
Jonah opened a map of the mansion.
“The ring is less useful than the thief thinks. The biometric key needs Eleanor’s living fingerprint.”
“Can they copy it?” Quinn asked.
“Not easily.”
Eleanor remembered Chloe grabbing her hand before the police entered.
“She may have collected my fingerprint from the ring or phone.”
Jonah shook his head.
“The sensor also measures pulse and skin conductivity.”
“What about forcing her to unlock it?” Quinn asked.
The room became quiet.
Eleanor answered.
“They would need to reach me first.”
Quinn assigned officers to the mansion.
At two in the morning, Jonah located Eleanor’s phone signal beneath the property.
The device was moving through the old service tunnels.
Quinn’s team entered from the east wing.
Eleanor watched their body-camera feeds in the security room. The tunnels were narrow, dusty, and lined with pipes installed during several generations of renovation.
The signal stopped beneath the abandoned conservatory.
Officers found Eleanor’s phone on the floor.
Beside it lay the wedding ring.
No person was visible.
Jonah examined the device remotely.
“It’s transmitting.”
“To where?” Eleanor asked.
“An outside server.”
“Can you trace it?”
“I can try, but the transmission may contain a trap.”
Quinn crouched beside the phone on the video feed.
A message appeared on its screen.
NINETEEN HOURS REMAIN UNTIL VICTOR SLOANE DIES.
A live video opened.
Victor sat bound to a chair inside a concrete room.
A clock stood behind him.
19:00:00
18:59:59
18:59:58
Eleanor gripped the edge of the desk.
“Can we identify the room?”
Jonah captured the image.
“No windows. No visible landmarks.”
“There’s sound,” Quinn said.
They increased the audio.
A low mechanical rhythm repeated every eleven seconds.
Jonah isolated it.
“Could be ventilation.”
Eleanor listened again.
“No. It’s water pressure.”
Quinn looked at her.
“How do you know?”
“My father built a private archival facility beneath the original Mercer factory. The pumps made that sound.”
“The factory closed twenty years ago.”
“The underground level still exists.”
Quinn contacted a tactical unit.
The old factory stood thirty miles outside the city. Reaching it would take forty minutes.
Too obvious.
Too easy.
“This is what they want,” Eleanor said.
Quinn paused.
“You think the location is a trap.”
“I think someone wants the police away from another location.”
“Which one?”
“The legal archive containing Victor’s Icarus key.”
Jonah checked the authorization logs.
Victor’s legal key had been active for the past six hours.
The signal did not originate from the old factory.
It came from Mercer Meridian’s headquarters.
Someone inside the building had access to Victor’s key.
Someone the new chief executive would trust.
“Harrison is in custody,” Quinn said.
“He isn’t the only person controlling the company,” Eleanor replied.
They reviewed the board access logs.
Five directors had entered the headquarters after midnight.
Amelia Hart was one of them.
The board chair had cast the deciding vote that removed Eleanor.
She also held one half of the divided trustee authorization.
“The third trustee,” Eleanor said.
Jonah understood.
“Victor warned us the trustee was compromised.”
Quinn contacted officers near Mercer Meridian.
Before they could enter, the building’s fire alarms activated. Employees and overnight security staff evacuated.
Amelia Hart was not among them.
At three fourteen, Eleanor received a call from an unknown number.
Amelia’s voice came through.
“You should have let Harrison win.”
“Where is Victor?”
“Alive, for now.”
“You authorized the false Icarus activation.”
“I protected the company.”
“You protected stolen money.”
“You still think this is about money.”
“What is it about?”
“Control.”
“Harrison wanted control.”
“Harrison wanted recognition. Chloe wanted status. They were useful because their desires were simple.”
“And yours?”
Amelia was silent for a moment.
“I want Mercer Meridian to become what your father intended.”
“My father is dead.”
May you like
“Yes,” Amelia said quietly. “That is what made this possible.”
The call ended.
