Chapter 6 - The Mansion Trap

Eleanor did not activate the protocol immediately.

Jonah’s message could have been genuine.

It could also have been sent by someone holding his device.

Protocol Icarus required evidence, not emotion.

Harrison and Chloe stood in the foyer, each waiting for her reaction.

Eleanor placed one hand behind her back and pressed the ring clasp against her palm. The hidden sensor read her fingerprint and opened a silent authentication screen on her phone.

“I want both of you to leave,” she said.

Harrison shook his head.

“We need to settle the trust issue tonight.”

“The board already suspended me.”

“Your executive position is separate from the founding trust.”

“So this was never only about the company.”

“It is all the same company.”

“No. Mercer Meridian is a business. The founding trust is control. You can spend money without owning it, but you cannot survive an investigation unless you control the evidence.”

Chloe moved toward the library.

Eleanor stepped in front of her.

“What are you looking for?”

“Nothing.”

“The drive isn’t there.”

Chloe looked at Harrison.

Again, too quickly.

Eleanor understood that Harrison had not taken Victor’s drive.

Chloe had.

“Give it to me,” Eleanor said.

Chloe laughed once.

“You still think you can give orders.”

“No. I think you came here because you cannot open the drive.”

Harrison’s expression changed.

The black drive required Victor’s encryption key. Chloe possessed the physical device but not its contents.

“You need my ring,” Eleanor continued.

Harrison looked at her left hand.

The wedding band contained one of the Icarus keys. If he had learned about the protocol, he may have misunderstood how it worked.

The ring could authenticate Eleanor’s identity.

It could not give him control.

Harrison extended his hand.

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

“This does not have to become worse.”

“It became worse years ago. I simply arrived late.”

Chloe moved first.

She reached for Eleanor’s hand.

Eleanor pulled away, striking the edge of a side table. A decorative sculpture fell and shattered. Harrison grabbed Chloe’s arm, either to stop her or move her aside.

The front doors opened.

Detective Quinn entered with four officers.

“Step away from Mrs. Mercer.”

No one moved.

Quinn’s officers advanced.

Harrison released Chloe.

“This is a private marital dispute,” he said.

“It became a police matter when your wife reported an unlawful entry.”

“She did not report anything.”

“I did,” Eleanor said.

While speaking to Quinn earlier, Eleanor had left a standing emergency instruction. Any use of the old mansion override code would alert the detective directly.

Harrison finally realized the building itself had been a trap.

An officer directed him away from Eleanor.

Chloe moved toward the front door.

Quinn blocked her path.

“We need to speak about Samuel Keene.”

“I don’t know where he is.”

“That’s interesting. I didn’t ask where he was.”

Chloe went silent.

Eleanor’s phone vibrated again.

This time, Jonah’s message contained an image.

Victor sat inside an unfamiliar room holding a newspaper with that morning’s date. A dark bruise marked one cheek, but he appeared alert.

A handwritten message rested against his chest.

THE THIRD TRUSTEE IS COMPROMISED.

Eleanor opened Protocol Icarus.

Two authentication signals were already active.

Hers was not one of them.

Someone was trying to trigger the protocol using Victor’s legal key and the divided trustee authorization.

If Eleanor did nothing, the false activation would fail.

But the attempt would reveal the protocol’s structure and allow Harrison’s people to disable it.

If she activated it herself, every protected account would freeze.

The board would call it proof of sabotage.

She had less than a minute to decide.

Harrison watched the light from her screen.

“What are you doing?”

Eleanor removed the wedding ring.

For twelve years, it had represented a promise.

For four days, it had concealed a weapon.

She pressed the ring against the phone.

BIOMETRIC AUTHENTICATION CONFIRMED

LEGAL AUTHORIZATION CONFIRMED

TRUSTEE AUTHORIZATION CONTESTED

PROTOCOL ICARUS READY

Harrison lunged forward.

The officers restrained him.

“Eleanor, reverse the command!”

She selected ACTIVATE.

Across seventeen countries, accounts connected to Calder Strategic Holdings and twenty-three related entities froze simultaneously.

Hidden shareholder transfers were suspended.

Copies of financial evidence moved to independent servers.

Regulators received sealed reports.

Police departments received location data associated with the suspected network.

The Mercer founding trust entered protective control.

Harrison stopped struggling.

Chloe stared at the phone.

“What have you done?” she whispered.

Eleanor placed the wedding ring on the shattered marble.

“Protocol Icarus cannot be reversed.”

Harrison’s voice became desperate.

“What did you do?”

“I froze every account you stole from me.”

Then Victor’s encrypted file arrived.

ICARUS WAS AUTHORIZED BY THE WRONG PERSON.

YOUR CHIEF LEGAL OFFICER AUTHORIZED THE PLAN.

The lights went out.

In the darkness, an officer shouted.

A window broke somewhere deeper inside the mansion.

Eleanor felt someone pass close behind her.

By the time the emergency lights activated, Harrison remained in police custody.

Chloe remained beside the door.

Detective Quinn remained near the staircase.

May you like

But Eleanor’s phone was gone.

So was the wedding ring.
