THE NIGHT ETHAN STOPPED PAYING / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - One Point Eight Four Billion

Money changes the behavior of people long before it reaches their hands.

The moment 1.84 billion dollars entered the conversation, everyone’s motives became suspect.

Charles’s.

Adrian’s.

Peter’s.

Melissa’s.

Perhaps even Jonathan Hale’s.

Daniel cautioned that the figure might be theoretical.

The Hale Reserve could contain illiquid property, old equity positions, disputed ownership, or nothing.

Ethan cared less about the amount than the secrecy.

“Why hide legitimate family assets for twenty-two years?”

“Because they weren’t legitimate,” Daniel said.

Or because someone wanted Charles to think they were inaccessible.

Peter Vale finally contacted them.

He agreed to meet at a private club in Manhattan.

He looked exhausted.

“You searched my mother’s house,” Ethan said.

“Your father’s house.”

“My mother lives there.”

Peter removed his glasses.

“I’m sorry.”

“That isn’t enough.”

“I know.”

“Where’s the ledger?”

Peter looked at Daniel.

Daniel said, “Answer him.”

“I don’t have it.”

“Did Charles take it?”

“No.”

“Adrian?”

Peter hesitated.

“The original ledger hasn’t been at the estate since 2006.”

“Then why was the compartment opened?”

“Because Charles believed a key was still there.”

“A key to what?”

“The Reserve.”

Ethan leaned forward.

“Explain.”

Peter closed his eyes briefly.

“When Jonathan Hale financed Bellweather, he feared Charles would gain total control. So he structured the capital through a network of accounts and trusts.”

“Why so complicated?”

“Jonathan was old-fashioned and paranoid.”

“Apparently not paranoid enough.”

Peter accepted that.

“The core reserve could only be accessed through three independent authorities.”

“Who?”

“Adrian. Jonathan. And me.”

“Jonathan died.”

“Yes.”

“Adrian disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“So you controlled it?”

“No. Jonathan planned for succession.”

“His grandchildren.”

Peter nodded.

“All three.”

Ethan.

Claire.

Nathan.

“To activate control,” Peter continued, “at least two adult beneficiaries must authenticate.”

Claire frowned.

“Then Ethan and I can access it.”

“Not without the ledger key.”

“What is that?”

“A sequence embedded in the original transaction ledger.”

Ethan stared.

“Which Adrian has.”

“Maybe.”

“You don’t know?”

“I haven’t seen Adrian since 2005.”

“But you spoke to him.”

“Through intermediaries.”

“Julian Voss?”

Peter looked surprised.

That was an answer.

“What does Voss want?”

“To protect Nathan.”

“From Charles?”

“From everyone.”

“Did Nathan create the forged guarantees?”

“No.”

“You answered quickly.”

“Because he didn’t.”

“How do you know?”

“I know who did.”

The room went silent.

Ethan leaned back.

“Tell me.”

Peter looked toward Daniel.

“Melissa Grant.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Why?”

“She believed she was carrying out my instructions.”

Daniel stood.

“You used my associate to steal client documents?”

“I used her to preserve copies.”

“She forged Ethan’s signature?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Peter looked directly at Ethan.

“Charles.”

Ethan felt no surprise.

Only confirmation.

“Why would my father forge a chain of documents designed to let Bellweather seize his own house?”

“Because he thought he could control the default.”

“Meaning?”

“Charles intended to transfer the estate to Bellweather temporarily, retrieve the key from the wall, activate the Reserve, and then refinance everything.”

Claire laughed in disbelief.

“He staged his own financial crisis?”

“Yes.”

“And the dinner?”

“Part of it.”

Ethan stared.

“Dad wanted me to revoke the guarantees.”

“Yes.”

“In front of witnesses.”

“Yes.”

“So he could claim I triggered the default.”

Peter nodded.

“And shift legal responsibility away from himself.”

Ethan stood and walked to the window.

That was Charles.

Always a structure.

Always a scapegoat.

Always someone else paying.

“Why humiliate me?”

Peter’s answer came softly.

“Because he knew anger was the only emotion strong enough to make you act before consulting Daniel.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

His father had known him.

Not loved him.

Known him.

Known exactly where to strike.

Claire whispered, “Why exclude me from the plan?”

Peter looked at her.

“Because Charles never believed you understood the business.”

Claire’s face hardened.

Another cruelty.

Another underestimation.

This time she used it.

“Good.”

Peter frowned.

“What?”

“People make mistakes when they think you’re stupid.”

Ethan turned.

His sister no longer looked hurt.

She looked focused.

“Where is Charles?”

Peter said, “I don’t know.”

“Where is Adrian?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where is Voss?”

“No.”

Claire leaned forward.

“You do know.”

Peter’s eyes moved to her.

She smiled slightly.

“Dad underestimated me too. I know what it looks like.”

Peter looked away.

Claire continued.

“Voss is protecting Nathan. Nathan is a beneficiary. Adrian has the ledger. Dad wants the Reserve. You’re standing in the middle pretending you only clean up paperwork.”

Peter remained silent.

“So where would Voss go if Charles started hunting Nathan?”

Peter whispered, “Canada.”

“Where?”

“I can’t.”

Claire stood.

“Then you can explain everything to federal investigators.”

Peter looked at Ethan.

Ethan said nothing.

Peter realized Claire was not bluffing.

“Quebec.”

“Where?”

“A property outside Sutton.”

Daniel wrote it down.

“Owned by?”

Peter swallowed.

“Rebecca Cross.”

Nathan’s mother.

They checked records.

The property had never been transferred after Rebecca’s death.

Taxes were paid anonymously through a trust.

Ethan arranged travel.

Before they left, Daniel received urgent news.

North Atlantic had discovered a transfer request submitted through an old Bellweather authorization channel.

Amount requested:

1.84 billion dollars.

Receiving account:

Mercer Strategic Holdings.

Charles had found a way to activate the Reserve.

But there was one problem.

The request required two beneficiary authentications.

Ethan had not signed anything.

May you like

Claire had not signed anything.

Which meant Charles had access to Nathan.
