Chapter 10 - Sarah Whitmore Was Alive

The message arrived before they left the storage building.

You found the tapes.

Emily looked down the empty corridor.

“Sarah?”

Claire immediately turned.

“What?”

Emily showed her.

Jordan scanned the hallway.

No one.

Emily typed:

Where are you?

The response:

Not close enough to help you.

Then:

Yet.

Emily wrote:

Why did you disappear?

Sarah replied:

Because Diane made sure staying would destroy me.

Emily typed quickly.

Tell me everything.

The response came slower this time.

Not over messages.

Emily stared at the screen.

Then a location appeared.

A public botanical garden two hours away.

Tomorrow.

11:00 a.m.

Come alone.

Claire read it.

“No.”

Emily almost smiled.

“I knew you’d say that.”

“You are not meeting an unknown person alone.”

“If it’s Sarah, she’s been hiding for eleven years.”

“That doesn’t make her safe.”

“No.”

Claire blinked.

Emily continued.

“But it makes her scared.”

Jordan suggested a compromise.

Emily could enter alone while Claire and Jordan remained nearby.

Sarah had warned against being followed.

Emily replied.

I’ll come.

That evening, Mark stopped messaging.

The silence was worse than the threats.

Claire’s apartment became Noah’s temporary home.

Emily washed bottles.

Changed diapers.

Rocked him to sleep.

Every ordinary task felt like defiance.

Her life had been transformed into evidence and secrets, but Noah did not know that.

He knew warmth.

Milk.

His mother’s voice.

Emily intended to keep it that way.

At 10:30 p.m., someone knocked.

Claire froze.

Jordan, who had stayed nearby, moved toward the door.

“Who is it?”

No answer.

Another knock.

Emily checked the peephole.

Empty hallway.

Jordan opened the door cautiously.

A padded envelope lay on the floor.

Inside was a USB drive.

No note.

Claire said, “We should not plug that into anything important.”

Jordan produced an old offline laptop.

The drive contained one video.

Mark sat in a restaurant.

Across from him was Richard.

Date stamped eight months earlier.

Mark said, “I want it guaranteed.”

Richard replied, “Nothing is guaranteed.”

“If Noah is yours biologically.”

“He would be my grandson.”

“Then put him in the trust.”

“I already explained my conditions.”

“No Diane.”

“No exploitation.”

Mark leaned forward.

“What about Emily?”

Richard studied him.

“What about her?”

“She controls everything involving Noah.”

“She’s his mother.”

“That’s the problem.”

Emily felt cold.

Richard said, “If you are asking me to help remove your wife from your child’s life, this conversation is over.”

Mark’s expression hardened.

“You owe me.”

“I owe you honesty. I owe you the chance to know me. I do not owe you my fortune.”

Mark stood.

“Then Mom was right about you.”

Richard watched him leave.

The video continued.

A figure approached Richard’s table.

Diane.

Richard looked furious.

“You told him about the trust.”

Diane sat.

“He deserved to know.”

“You are poisoning him.”

“No. Poverty poisoned him.”

“He isn’t poor.”

“He thinks like someone who might become poor.”

Richard stood.

“This ends now.”

Diane smiled.

“You said that about Sarah.”

Richard froze.

Diane continued.

“Yet here we are.”

The recording ended.

Claire whispered, “Who filmed this?”

Emily shook her head.

A text arrived.

Sarah.

I did.

Emily typed:

You were following them?

May you like

Sarah replied:

I never stopped.
