Chapter 13 - the woman from the photograph

Her name was Claire.
Emily looked again at the photograph.
The pregnant woman beside her ten years earlier.
Older now.
Different hair.
But unmistakably the same face.
Claire entered the room.
Diane looked like she had seen a ghost.
"You."
Claire's expression hardened.
"Hello, Aunt Diane."
Mark stared between them.
"You knew her?"
Diane said nothing.
Claire laughed bitterly.
"Of course she knew me."
Robert whispered, "Eleanor told us she never had children."
Claire looked at him.
"My mother told you what kept me alive."
Daniel asked, "Alive from who?"
Claire's gaze moved to Keller.
"People like him."
Keller stepped toward the door.
Daniel blocked it.
"No."
Claire looked at Keller.
"You should've stayed dead."
He smiled.
"You first."
Mark said, "Enough."
He turned to Claire.
"Why were you at St. Catherine's the night Lily was born?"
Claire looked at Emily.
"Because I was having my daughter."
Emily's chest tightened.
"What happened to her?"
Claire's eyes filled.
"I was told she died."
Nobody spoke.
"But you don't believe that," Daniel said.
Claire shook her head.
"I did for years."
"Then?"
"My mother contacted me."
Diane snapped, "Eleanor was dead."
Claire ignored her.
"Seven years ago, I received a message."
Emily noticed Daniel's expression.
"Seven years."
Everything came back to that year.
The Christmas market.
Keller's fake death.
Diane's sudden obsession.
The hidden envelope.
"What did Eleanor tell you?" Emily asked.
Claire's voice trembled.
"She told me my baby survived."
Emily closed her eyes.
"No."
Mark reached for her hand.
Claire continued.
"She said someone manipulated hospital records because of the trust."
"Did she say my daughter was yours?"
"No."
Emily opened her eyes.
Claire held her gaze.
"My mother specifically warned me not to assume that."
Diane scoffed.
"Convenient."
Claire turned.
"You assumed it."
"I had evidence."
"You had what Keller sold you."
Diane looked furious.
Claire continued.
"You followed Lily. You stole a sample. You treated that child like an enemy because you were terrified she might belong to my branch of the family."
"I was protecting Mark."
Claire laughed.
"You don't protect a son by abusing his daughter."
Mark looked away.
Even Diane had no response.
Emily asked the question that mattered.
"Do you think Lily is your biological daughter?"
Claire looked at her for a long moment.
"I don't know."
Emily appreciated the answer more than she expected.
Claire stepped closer.
"But I know this. Whatever happened that night, you raised her. You loved her. You are her mother."
Emily's eyes filled.
"Thank you."
Claire nodded.
"I didn't come to take anyone's child."
Mark's shoulders relaxed slightly.
"Then why are you here?"
"Because my mother disappeared three weeks ago."
Daniel frowned.
"Eleanor was alive three weeks ago?"
"Yes."
Diane gripped the windowsill.
Claire looked at her.
"Surprised?"
Diane whispered, "Where?"
"I don't know."
"When did you last see her?"
"Twenty-three days ago."
"What happened?"
"She called me."
Claire's voice became quiet.
"She said Lily was about to turn ten, and once that happened, the trust could no longer remain dormant."
Daniel looked at the legal petition.
"What does Lily's tenth birthday trigger?"
Claire glanced at the document.
"A succession review."
Mark frowned.
"The inheritance?"
"Not just money."
"What else?"
"Property. Voting control. Foundations. Holdings."
Robert whispered, "How much?"
Claire looked at Diane.
"Enough for her to spend thirty years trying to control it."
Diane snapped, "It belongs to the Hayes family."
Claire stepped toward her.
"I am the Hayes family."
Diane's face hardened.
"So am I."
"Then why did Grandmother remove you?"
Silence.
Mark looked at his mother.
"Remove you from what?"
Diane said nothing.
Claire answered.
"The primary succession."
Robert stared.
"I never knew."
"Because Diane spent most of her adult life pretending she hadn't been disinherited."
Mark looked almost dizzy.
"Why was she disinherited?"
Claire's eyes remained on Diane.
"Ask her what happened to my mother's first child."
Diane slapped Claire.
The sound cracked through the room.
Mark immediately moved between them.
"That's enough."
Claire touched her cheek.
She didn't retaliate.
She smiled sadly.
"Still afraid of that question."
Diane turned away.
Emily watched her.
"What happened?"
Diane said nothing.
Keller suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at him.
He nodded toward the red folder.
"The answer isn't in there."
"Where?" Daniel asked.
Keller's gaze moved toward Claire.
"Ask her mother."
Claire's face hardened.
"I told you she's missing."
Keller smiled.
"No."
"What?"
"She's hiding."
"From who?"
Keller looked toward Diane.
Then Daniel.
Then Emily.
"From the person who actually switched the records that night."
Emily's blood ran cold.
"Who?"
May you like
Keller's smile vanished.
"The one person none of you have questioned."
