THE NIGHT DAVID CAME HOME / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - The Second Bracelet

The photograph’s metadata led to a warehouse district, but by the time police arrived, the room was empty.

They found a crib, medical equipment, and a hospital bracelet bearing Noah’s name.

The blood on the bracelet belonged to an unknown newborn male.

Maya gripped David’s hand.

“I gave birth to one child.”

The delivery records said the same.

But Dr. Cole had controlled the operating room after complications forced an emergency procedure. Maya had been unconscious for three hours. David was in the waiting area because Evelyn convinced staff he was becoming disruptive.

A surgical nurse named Priya Shah had resigned the next day.

Hale found her living under another name in Vermont.

She agreed to speak after learning Cole had disappeared.

“There were two babies,” she said over a secure video call.

Maya stopped breathing.

“Twins?”

“Yes. Two boys. The second was smaller but stable.”

“Why was I told there was one?”

“Dr. Cole ordered the second infant transferred. He said there was a prenatal surrogacy dispute and a sealed court order.”

“There was no surrogacy.”

“I know that now.”

Priya had objected. Cole threatened her license and claimed the Cross family’s lawyers would destroy her. Evelyn arrived at the hospital shortly after the birth and accompanied the second infant’s transport.

David felt rage rise so fast his vision blurred.

His mother had stolen one of his sons from the delivery room.

Noah’s twin had been alive for six weeks.

Somewhere.

With someone.

“Where was he taken?” Hale asked.

“A private neonatal clinic outside Hartford.”

The clinic burned down three days later.

No bodies were found.

Cole’s financial records revealed monthly payments from a company based in Luxembourg. The beneficial owner was hidden, but one transfer note contained a name.

Daniel Cross.

The dead twin’s identity had been used for decades.

Someone had lived under it.

Elise listened to the name and began screaming.

“He came to Rosehaven,” she said. “Daniel came to see me.”

“When?” David asked.

“Every year.”

“What did he look like?”

“Like Thomas. Like you.”

The third man was not Elise’s child.

He was another Cross.

But DNA proved David and Jonah were the only identical twins.

Could Daniel be a cousin? A fabricated heir? Or the stolen identity of Elise’s son?

The answers lay in Victor’s private files.

Facing murder and kidnapping charges, Victor still refused to cooperate. But Evelyn, learning that Noah had a missing twin, requested to speak with David.

They met again through glass.

This time Evelyn looked older.

“What is his name?” she asked.

“You don’t get to ask.”

“He is my grandson.”

“You stole him.”

“I protected him.”

“Where is he?”

Evelyn’s lips trembled.

“I gave him to Daniel.”

“Who is Daniel?”

“The son I should have raised.”

“You told me Daniel died.”

“He did.”

“Then who took my child?”

Evelyn looked over her shoulder at the guard.

When she spoke again, her voice was barely audible.

“The boy your father chose over you.”

David leaned closer.

“What does that mean?”

“Thomas believed one child was good and one was dangerous. He separated you before you could even speak.”

“Jonah and me?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“You and the third boy.”

“Who is he?”

Before she answered, the lights in the detention center went out.

Emergency alarms sounded.

The call disconnected.

When backup power returned, Evelyn was no longer in the interview room.

The guard lay unconscious.

And on the glass, written in blood, were four words:

Mother belongs to Daniel.
