THE NIGHT DAVID CAME HOME / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - The Child Who Died

Elise had been drugged for years.

Doctors found sedatives in her system at levels high enough to impair memory and movement. Rosehaven staff claimed the prescriptions were medically necessary. Hale seized records showing Victor personally approved every treatment.

When the drugs began to clear, Elise spoke in fragments.

She remembered the lake house.

She remembered Evelyn taking Jonah.

She remembered Thomas promising to expose St. Gabriel’s.

And she remembered two boys.

“David and Daniel,” she said.

David sat beside her.

“There was no Daniel.”

Elise touched his face.

“There were twins.”

The words cut through him.

Thomas and Evelyn had twin sons.

One was David.

The other, Daniel, died as an infant according to family records.

But Elise said Daniel survived.

Evelyn placed one twin with a private family as leverage against Thomas. Years later, when Thomas threatened to confess, Victor brought the child back.

“Which child was in the car?” David asked.

Elise began to shake.

“I don’t know.”

Maya held her hand.

Elise looked at David’s left wrist.

“Thomas marked them.”

David had a pale crescent scar beneath his thumb. Evelyn said it came from a childhood fall.

Elise asked Jonah to remove a leather bracelet.

Beneath it was the same crescent scar.

The room went silent.

Jonah stared at David.

“No.”

Elise began crying.

“Thomas made a cut so he could identify them. One on the left wrist. One on the right.”

David’s scar was on the left.

Jonah’s was on the right.

But Jonah was believed to be Elise’s son.

The identities had been rearranged.

Hale ordered DNA testing under chain of custody.

The results arrived forty-eight hours later.

David and Jonah were identical twins.

Both were the biological sons of Thomas and Evelyn Cross.

Maya was Elise’s biological daughter.

The family history everyone had fought over was false.

“What about Elise’s baby?” David asked.

Elise closed her eyes.

“My son was born the same night.”

Three infants.

Two Cross twins and Elise’s child.

Evelyn had switched records to hide the adoption network and maintain control over Thomas. One child disappeared into St. Gabriel’s. One remained with Evelyn. One moved through private care.

“Which one died?” Jonah asked.

Elise whispered, “None of them.”

According to her, all three boys survived infancy.

That meant a third man existed somewhere.

The true biological son of Elise and either Thomas or Victor.

A man who might be the rightful heir to part of the trust.

A man who had stayed hidden while Evelyn, Victor, David, Jonah, and Maya tore the family apart.

The police searched old St. Gabriel’s files for matching dates.

One record had been removed.

Not lost.

Removed recently.

Security logs showed someone accessed the sealed archive six weeks before Noah’s birth.

The signature belonged to Dr. Adrian Cole, Maya’s obstetrician.

David felt his stomach drop.

Cole had managed Maya’s pregnancy.

He had access to Noah’s blood.

He authorized Elise’s transfusion unit.

And he disappeared the morning after Evelyn’s arrest.

Hale issued an alert.

That evening, Maya received a photograph on her phone.

It showed Dr. Cole standing beside a crib.

Inside the crib was a newborn wearing Noah’s hospital bracelet.

Maya looked toward Noah, sleeping safely in David’s arms.

The child in the photograph was not Noah.

But he looked exactly like him.

The message beneath the photograph read:

May you like

You have one Cross baby.

I have the other.
