THE NIGHT DANIEL CHOSE DIVORCE / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - Before the Door Opens

The cars stopped outside.

Nobody moved.

Rachel stood in the center of the room.

The house felt smaller than it had moments earlier.

Daniel's father looked toward the window.

Patricia was crying silently.

Vanessa stood near the fireplace.

Ethan kept his phone in his hand.

Daniel remained beside Rachel.

She looked at him.

"Did you know my father was coming?"

"No."

"Did you know he was alive?"

"I suspected."

Rachel's eyes narrowed.

"That's not an answer."

Daniel swallowed.

"I wanted to believe he was."

Rachel looked away.

Outside, a car door opened.

Footsteps approached.

Slow.

Measured.

Familiar.

Rachel's breathing became shallow.

She had spent twenty-four years imagining her father's death.

She had imagined the funeral.

The coffin.

The final goodbye.

She had remembered his voice fading from her life.

Now that voice might be on the other side of the door.

Daniel reached for her hand.

Rachel allowed him to hold it.

For the first time since the restaurant, she didn't pull away.

Then she remembered the letter.

Do not trust the person standing beside you.

She gently removed her hand.

Daniel noticed.

His expression broke.

Rachel whispered.

"I don't know if I can trust you."

Daniel nodded.

"I understand."

"Do you?"

"Yes."

"No."

Rachel looked directly into his eyes.

"You don't understand what it feels like to discover that the person you married may have known the truth about your father while you spent your whole life grieving him."

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"I know."

"Then tell me everything."

"I will."

"When?"

"After tonight."

Rachel shook her head.

"No more after."

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"Then right now."

Before he could speak, someone knocked on the door.

Three times.

Everyone froze.

Rachel looked toward the entrance.

Patricia whispered.

"That's him."

Daniel's father shook his head.

"No."

Rachel looked at him.

"You know that knock?"

He didn't answer.

Another knock.

This time louder.

Rachel walked toward the door.

Daniel stepped beside her.

Vanessa moved forward.

"Rachel, wait."

Rachel stopped.

"Why?"

Vanessa looked terrified.

"Because the man outside isn't alone."

Rachel stared.

"What do you mean?"

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

"Ask him."

Rachel turned.

Daniel's face had gone pale.

"Daniel?"

He didn't answer.

"How many people are outside?"

He whispered.

"Three."

Rachel's heart sank.

"Who?"

Daniel looked at the door.

"I don't know."

A voice came from outside.

"Rachel."

She froze.

Her father's voice.

The voice from the phone.

The voice from the old recordings.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Dad?"

Silence.

Then the voice answered.

"Yes."

Rachel reached for the lock.

Daniel grabbed her wrist.

"Wait."

She looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because your father didn't come here to see you."

Rachel stared.

"What are you saying?"

Daniel's father stepped forward.

"He came for the ledger."

Vanessa shook her head.

"No."

Rachel looked at her.

"You know something."

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"I know where it is."

Rachel's heart pounded.

"Where?"

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

Then at Patricia.

Then at the locked door.

Finally, she looked at Rachel.

"You've been carrying it."

Rachel frowned.

"What?"

Vanessa pointed toward Rachel's handbag.

"The whole time."

Rachel slowly looked down.

Her handbag.

The one she had carried from the restaurant.

The one she had taken to the hotel.

The one she had carried to the hospital.

The one she had brought into this house.

Rachel opened it.

Inside were her wallet.

Her phone.

Her keys.

The ultrasound photograph.

The envelope from her father.

And something else.

A thin black notebook.

Rachel had never seen it before.

She picked it up.

Daniel stared.

His father stepped backward.

Patricia covered her mouth.

Vanessa whispered:

"That's the ledger."

Rachel looked at the notebook.

Then at the door.

Another knock sounded.

Her father's voice came through.

"Rachel, open the door."

She tightened her grip on the ledger.

Daniel whispered:

"Don't."

Rachel looked at him.

"Why?"

He didn't answer.

Outside, the voice came again.

This time colder.

"Rachel, if you open that door, you'll finally learn why your father disappeared."

Rachel stared at the door.

Then at the ledger.

The truth was no longer somewhere far away.

It was in her hands.

And whoever stood outside knew it.

Rachel slowly reached for the lock.

Behind her, Daniel whispered one final warning.

"Rachel..."

She stopped.

"What?"

Daniel looked at the ledger.

Then at Vanessa.

Then at his father.

His voice was barely audible.

"The name on the first page isn't your father's."

Rachel's blood ran cold.

She opened the notebook.

The first page was blank except for one handwritten name.

Rachel stared at it.

She knew the name.

Everyone in the room knew it.

And suddenly she understood why her father had spent twenty-four years hiding.

Rachel looked toward the door.

The person outside knocked again.

She didn't open it.

Not yet.

Because the name in her hands had changed everything.

And the person she had trusted most might have been the one who had been lying to her from the beginning.

The door handle slowly began to turn.

Rachel closed the ledger.

Whatever happened next would decide whether her marriage could be saved, whether her father was truly telling the truth, and whether the child she carried would inherit a fortune...

or a secret powerful enough to destroy the entire Mercer family.

The door opened.

May you like

And Rachel finally saw who was standing there.

To be continued.
