Chapter 1 - The Photograph on the Table

Rachel drove without turning on the radio.

Her hands were steady.

That surprised her.

She had expected to shake.

She had expected tears.

Instead, she felt strangely empty.

At a red light, she looked down at her stomach.

Eight weeks.

A tiny life.

A secret she had planned to share with the man she had loved since college.

The light turned green.

She drove home.

Their house looked exactly as it always had.

Warm lights.

Perfect landscaping.

The brass number beside the door.

The expensive car Daniel had bought two years earlier.

Everything looked normal.

That was the cruelest part.

Rachel stepped inside.

She placed her purse on the console.

Then she stopped.

Daniel had left something on the kitchen counter.

A leather folder.

She recognized it.

It was the folder he used for important documents.

Rachel stared at it.

She should have walked away.

Instead, she opened it.

The first page was a draft divorce agreement.

Her name was typed across the top.

Rachel Mercer.

She turned the page.

There were financial schedules.

Property divisions.

Bank accounts.

Investment accounts.

A section about marital assets.

And then she saw a name.

Vanessa Mercer.

Rachel's fingers went cold.

She read the sentence twice.

Vanessa was listed as the intended beneficiary of one of Daniel's private investment structures.

Rachel closed the folder.

Her heart began beating harder.

She knew Vanessa was Daniel's cousin.

She knew Vanessa had always been financially reckless.

But this was different.

Why would Daniel transfer assets to her?

Rachel heard the front door.

She quickly returned the folder to the counter.

Daniel walked in.

His tie was loose.

His face looked exhausted.

He stopped when he saw Rachel.

"You came back."

"It's my house too."

He nodded.

"Of course."

Rachel studied him.

"Did you expect me to disappear?"

"No."

"You filed for divorce without telling me."

"I know."

"And now you're surprised I'm standing in my own kitchen."

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Rachel, tonight wasn't supposed to happen like that."

"What was supposed to happen?"

He said nothing.

Rachel waited.

"Tell me about Vanessa."

Daniel looked up sharply.

"What about her?"

"Why is her name in your divorce documents?"

His expression changed.

Just for a second.

Rachel saw it.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Where did you see that?"

"The folder."

"You shouldn't have opened it."

Rachel laughed once.

"You shouldn't have filed it."

Daniel lowered his voice.

"There are things you don't understand."

"Then explain them."

"I can't."

"You can."

"I can't."

Rachel stared at him.

"Then we're done."

Daniel looked almost relieved.

Then Rachel noticed something.

His relief wasn't because the marriage was ending.

It was because she had stopped asking questions.

That frightened her more than the divorce.

She turned toward the stairs.

"Where are you going?"

"To bed."

"Rachel."

She stopped.

Daniel hesitated.

"There is something you need to know."

She turned.

"What?"

He looked toward the folder.

"Someone has been moving money out of the Mercer accounts."

Rachel frowned.

"Who?"

Daniel didn't answer.

"Daniel."

He looked directly at her.

"I don't know."

Rachel stared at him.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I expect you to understand that the divorce isn't what you think it is."

Rachel's stomach tightened.

"Then what is it?"

Daniel opened his mouth.

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

Rachel saw only two words.

PRIVATE NUMBER.

Daniel stepped outside to answer.

Rachel remained in the kitchen.

May you like

And for the first time that night, she wondered whether Daniel had filed for divorce to leave her...

or to protect her.
