Chapter 14 - Evelyn's Confession

Daniel saw his mother the next morning.
Police placed her in a private hospital room under observation.
Evelyn looked smaller.
Bruises marked one wrist.
Her blue blouse had been replaced by a hospital gown.
When Daniel entered, she began crying.
He closed the door.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Evelyn whispered, "Clara?"
"Recovering."
"Noah?"
"Safe."
She nodded.
"Good."
Daniel remained standing.
"Tell me the truth."
Evelyn looked toward the window.
"About what?"
"All of it."
Her face tightened.
"Daniel..."
"If you lie once, I leave."
She looked at him.
He meant it.
Evelyn began.
"Marjorie had Margaret when she was nineteen."
"Who was the father?"
"Leonard Pike."
"Kidnapper."
"Abuser."
Daniel waited.
"After he took Margaret, we were terrified he'd come back."
"So you changed her identity."
"Temporarily."
"To Anna Carter."
Evelyn nodded.
"Thomas agreed?"
"At first."
Daniel felt betrayed even by the dead.
"Why?"
"To protect the child."
"And the trust?"
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"We discovered it later."
"You stole from it."
"I borrowed."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Eight hundred thousand dollars isn't borrowing."
"It wasn't all mine."
"How much?"
Silence.
"How much?"
"Two hundred thousand."
Daniel stared.
"Where?"
"Medical bills. Your father's treatment. Your education."
"My education was scholarship-funded."
Evelyn looked away.
Daniel understood.
"You've lied about everything."
"No."
"Where was Margaret?"
"Living with Marjorie."
"Under what name?"
"Different ones."
"Why?"
"Because Leonard's family kept looking."
"What happened later?"
Evelyn's expression changed.
"Marjorie became obsessed with the trust."
Daniel folded his arms.
"Explain."
"Margaret was legally connected to our family. Marjorie realized that if Margaret remained Anna on paper, she could claim part of Thomas's distribution."
"So Marjorie didn't want to restore her identity."
"No."
"Did you?"
Evelyn's eyes filled.
"At first."
Daniel caught the phrase.
"At first."
She covered her face.
"I was afraid."
"Of what?"
"Prison."
Daniel stared.
"For fraud?"
"For more."
His chest tightened.
"What more?"
"Identity documents. False medical records. Tax filings."
"Did Dad know?"
"Not until much later."
"And when he learned?"
"He wanted to expose everything."
"So you stopped him."
"No."
"Did Marjorie?"
Evelyn hesitated.
"She threatened him."
"With what?"
"With you."
Daniel froze.
"Me?"
"She said if Thomas went to the police, she'd tell them he had participated from the beginning."
"He had."
"Only to hide Margaret from Leonard."
"Still illegal."
"Yes."
Daniel breathed slowly.
"Where does Rachel fit?"
Evelyn looked afraid.
"Margaret had Rachel when she was twenty."
"Father?"
"I don't know."
"Why was Rachel hidden?"
"Because by then, Margaret knew too much."
Daniel's jaw clenched.
"About the trust?"
"About Marjorie."
"What did Marjorie do?"
Evelyn whispered:
"She moved money through Margaret's identity for years."
"How much?"
"Millions."
Daniel felt sick.
"Where is it?"
"I don't know."
"What happened to Margaret?"
Evelyn began trembling.
"She tried to leave."
"And?"
"Marjorie stopped her."
"How?"
Evelyn looked down.
Daniel waited.
Finally she whispered:
"I heard them arguing."
"Where?"
"The mill."
"When?"
"Fourteen years ago."
"What happened?"
"I heard a gunshot."
Daniel went still.
"Did you see Margaret afterward?"
"No."
"Did you call police?"
Evelyn cried.
"No."
Daniel stared at his mother.
"You left her there."
"I was afraid."
"You left a woman there."
"I had you."
The excuse was instant.
Instinctive.
Daniel's face hardened.
"You always had a reason."
Evelyn looked up.
"What?"
"A reason you couldn't do the right thing."
"Daniel..."
"When you insulted Clara, you were protecting me."
"I thought..."
"When you controlled her after Noah's birth, you were helping."
"I was wrong."
"When Margaret disappeared, you were afraid for your family."
Evelyn sobbed.
"I was."
"And every time your fear needed somebody to suffer, you chose somebody else."
Evelyn stared.
Daniel stood.
"Clara nearly died because you thought your feelings mattered more than her body."
"I said I was wrong."
"That doesn't erase it."
He turned toward the door.
Evelyn whispered, "Are you abandoning me?"
Daniel stopped.
He looked back.
"No."
Hope flickered across her face.
"I'm refusing to abandon my wife to protect you."
The difference seemed to confuse her.
Before Daniel left, Evelyn called his name.
He turned.
"Thomas didn't die believing you hated him."
Daniel stared.
"Why would he?"
"Because our last argument was about you."
"What about me?"
Evelyn swallowed.
"He wanted to tell you everything."
"Why didn't he?"
"I begged him to wait."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"He listened to you?"
"No."
Her eyes filled.
"He wrote you a letter."
"The leather folder."
She nodded.
"Marjorie took it."
"Where is it?"
"I don't know."
Daniel opened the door.
"Then I'll find it."
Evelyn's voice stopped him once more.
"Daniel."
"What?"
"Thomas said if the letter disappeared, there was another copy."
His pulse jumped.
"Where?"
May you like
Evelyn shook her head.
"He said only Clara would understand where to look."
