Chapter 1 - The Woman on the Couch

The paramedics arrived within minutes.

Daniel moved aside as two emergency medical technicians rushed toward Clara with a stretcher and equipment.

Noah continued crying in his father's arms.

One paramedic, a woman named Theresa, knelt beside Clara.

"Ma'am? Can you hear me?"

Clara's eyelids fluttered.

Theresa checked her pulse.

Her expression sharpened.

"When did she give birth?"

"Two days ago," Daniel answered.

"Vaginal delivery or C-section?"

"Emergency procedure after delivery. They said she hemorrhaged."

Theresa exchanged a look with her partner.

"How much blood loss?"

"I don't know exactly. They almost transfused her."

Evelyn stood near the kitchen doorway.

"They released her from the hospital. Obviously they thought she was fine."

Theresa glanced at her.

"Who are you?"

"I'm his mother."

The answer came with a strange pride.

Theresa returned her attention to Clara.

"Did she follow discharge instructions?"

Daniel looked at the kitchen.

Then at Evelyn.

"No."

Evelyn's mouth tightened.

"That's not fair."

Daniel ignored her.

"They told her to rest. No heavy activity. No standing for long periods."

Theresa looked toward the stove.

"Has she been cooking?"

Daniel nodded.

Evelyn interrupted.

"She volunteered."

Clara's eyes opened.

"No."

The room went still.

Theresa leaned closer.

"Can you tell me what happened?"

Clara swallowed.

Her voice was barely audible.

"She woke me up."

Daniel's face drained of color.

"When?"

"This morning."

He had left before sunrise.

His construction management company was handling a major commercial project across town. Daniel had resisted returning to work so soon after Noah's birth, but Clara had encouraged him.

"It'll only be one day," she'd said.

His mother had offered to help.

Daniel now hated himself for accepting.

Clara continued.

"She said... house was disgusting."

Evelyn scoffed.

"There were dishes."

Theresa looked over her shoulder.

"Please let her speak."

Evelyn crossed her arms.

Clara's breathing became uneven.

Theresa placed an oxygen mask over her face.

"We need to transport."

Daniel grabbed the diaper bag.

"I'm coming."

Evelyn moved toward him.

"What about me?"

Daniel stared at her.

"What about you?"

"I can't stay here alone after you've just humiliated me in front of strangers."

One of the paramedics looked away, clearly uncomfortable.

Daniel handed Noah briefly to Theresa while he pulled on his jacket.

"Mom, listen carefully."

Evelyn's chin lifted.

"You are not coming to the hospital."

Her face stiffened.

"I'm your mother."

"And Clara is my wife."

"So now I don't matter?"

Daniel looked at the broken dinner plate on the floor.

"Not tonight."

The words seemed to strike her physically.

Evelyn blinked.

Daniel picked up Noah.

"Don't be here when I come home."

Evelyn laughed once in disbelief.

"You can't throw me out."

"This is my house."

"You told me I could stay for two weeks."

"That was before I found my wife unconscious while you ate the dinner she cooked for you."

Evelyn's voice dropped.

"You're going to regret speaking to me like this."

Daniel walked toward the door.

"No. I regret every time I didn't."

The paramedics rolled Clara outside.

Daniel followed.

Evelyn stood alone in the house as the ambulance doors closed.

She watched from the living room window until it disappeared down the street.

Then the wounded expression vanished.

She turned toward the couch.

Toward the blanket where Clara had been lying.

Toward the small side table beside it.

She searched beneath the blanket.

Nothing.

Between the cushions.

Nothing.

Her movements became faster.

She checked beneath the couch.

Then the end table drawer.

Then Clara's handbag.

Nothing.

Evelyn stood very still.

"I kept the recording."

Clara's whisper echoed in her memory.

Recording of what?

Evelyn looked toward the kitchen.

Her phone buzzed.

A message appeared from her sister, Marjorie.

How are things with the new baby?

Evelyn began typing.

Then stopped.

She deleted the message.

Instead, she opened Clara's handbag again and searched every compartment.

At the bottom was a small key.

Evelyn recognized it immediately.

The key belonged to the locked drawer in Daniel and Clara's bedroom.

She stared at it.

Then looked toward the front door.

Daniel wouldn't return for hours.

Perhaps longer.

Evelyn closed her fingers around the key.

Ten minutes later, she opened the bedroom drawer.

Inside was a small black notebook.

A flash drive.

Several printed bank statements.

And an envelope with Daniel's name written across the front.

Evelyn reached for it.

Then froze.

On the envelope, beneath Daniel's name, Clara had written:

If anything happens to me, give this to him before you call his mother.
