Chapter 4 - The Man in the Doorway)

The next ninety seconds changed the Morgan family forever.

Margaret grabbed Claire.

Claire fought back.

Daniel struck Claire.

The bookcase collapsed.

The door opened.

Edward Vale stepped inside.

For several seconds, Claire could not speak.

Her father looked older.

The last time she had seen him in person had been at a charity banquet four years earlier.

Daniel had spent the drive home explaining why Edward's cold behavior proved he did not care about her.

Claire remembered her father's expression that night.

She had interpreted it as anger.

Now she recognized it.

Helplessness.

Edward walked through the destroyed dining room.

Two men entered behind him.

One was his longtime attorney, Samuel Price.

The other was a uniformed police officer.

Daniel lowered his fist.

"Mr. Vale."

Edward ignored him.

He knelt beside Claire.

"Can you stand?"

Claire nodded automatically.

Then tried.

Pain shot through her shoulder.

Edward's face tightened.

"Don't move."

"I'm okay."

"No."

His voice softened.

"You don't have to say that anymore."

Those words almost broke her.

Margaret recovered first.

"This is a private family matter."

Edward turned slowly.

"You assaulted my daughter in front of eleven witnesses."

Margaret straightened.

"She assaulted me."

"After you dragged her from a chair by her hair."

"She threw boiling soup."

"It was served six minutes earlier," Rachel said. "It wasn't boiling."

Everyone looked at her.

Rachel was holding her phone.

"I recorded most of it."

Daniel stared.

"You what?"

Rachel backed toward Edward's attorney.

"I started when Margaret brought out the guardianship papers."

Samuel Price extended his hand.

"May I?"

Rachel gave him the phone.

Daniel moved forward.

The officer stepped between them.

"Sir, stay where you are."

Daniel's face changed.

For years, Claire had watched him dominate rooms using money, reputation, and confidence.

Now someone had told him no.

He did not know what to do with it.

Edward helped Claire sit upright.

"You came," she whispered.

"Rachel called me three days ago."

Claire looked at Rachel.

"You knew?"

Rachel nodded.

"I didn't know if he would believe me."

Edward's mouth tightened.

"I believed her in seven minutes."

Claire almost smiled.

"Why didn't you call?"

"I did."

"I didn't receive anything."

"I know."

Those two words were different from Margaret's.

No manipulation.

Only sadness.

Edward looked at Daniel.

"Your husband has been intercepting communication between us for years."

Daniel scoffed.

"That's ridiculous."

Samuel Price spoke without looking up from Rachel's phone.

"Then you won't object to a forensic review."

Daniel said nothing.

Margaret looked at the relatives.

"Everyone leave."

Edward stood.

"No one leaves until officers take statements."

"You cannot order people to stay in my house."

Edward looked around.

"Actually, Margaret, this isn't your house."

Silence.

Margaret laughed.

"Excuse me?"

Edward turned toward Samuel.

The attorney removed a document from his briefcase.

"The property at 418 Laurel Ridge Road is held by Laurel Residential Holdings."

Daniel's brother frowned.

"So?"

Samuel looked at Claire.

"Laurel Residential Holdings is wholly owned by the Claire Vale Family Trust."

Claire stared.

"This house belongs to me?"

"Legally, yes."

Margaret's face drained of color.

Daniel stepped forward.

"That's impossible."

Edward looked at him.

"I wondered when you'd say that."

He took another document.

"Your father transferred the property into security seven years ago."

Margaret whispered.

"Harold would never."

"He did."

"Why?"

"Because the company was already in trouble."

Claire looked from face to face.

"How long has this been happening?"

Edward's answer changed everything.

"Since before you married Daniel."

Daniel snapped.

"Don't."

Edward turned toward him.

"Why? Afraid she'll learn her marriage solved a liquidity crisis?"

Claire stood despite the pain.

"Dad."

Edward looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

He hesitated.

For the first time, the powerful man in the room seemed afraid.

Not for himself.

For Claire.

She repeated.

"What does that mean?"

Edward looked at Daniel.

Then Margaret.

Finally back at his daughter.

"Your mother discovered the Morgan company was insolvent eight years ago."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"The year I met Daniel."

"Yes."

Daniel shook his head.

"This is ancient history."

Edward's voice hardened.

"Your mother believed Daniel's interest in you was not accidental."

Claire stared at her husband.

Daniel did not deny it.

Margaret did.

"Lies."

Edward turned toward her.

"Then perhaps we should discuss Harold's letter."

Margaret stopped breathing.

Daniel looked at his mother.

"What letter?"

Claire saw genuine confusion.

Edward noticed too.

He reached into his coat.

Margaret whispered.

"Edward, don't."

It was the first time Claire had ever heard Margaret Morgan sound afraid.

Edward removed a sealed envelope.

"Harold gave this to me eleven days before he died."

Daniel stared at his mother.

"You said Grandfather left nothing."

Margaret's face changed.

Edward held the envelope toward Claire.

"It's addressed to you."

Claire took it.

Her name was written across the front in Harold Morgan's handwriting.

Claire looked at Daniel.

Then Margaret.

Then her father.

"What is inside?"

May you like

Edward's answer was quiet.

"The reason your mother stopped trusting the Morgan family."
