Chapter 13 - Margaret's Last Bargain)

Rebecca was not in Boston.

She was three blocks away.

When Claire called, Rebecca answered immediately.

"Don't go anywhere."

Rebecca heard the panic.

"What happened?"

"Margaret knows."

Silence.

"How?"

"Daniel warned me."

Rebecca inhaled.

"I'm coming to you."

"No. Stay somewhere public."

"I'm tired of hiding."

"Rebecca."

"I've been hiding for fifteen years."

Her voice changed.

"I am done."

Twenty minutes later, Rebecca entered the mansion.

Claire almost shouted at her.

Instead she hugged her.

Rebecca froze.

Then hugged back.

"I didn't expect that."

"Neither did I."

Police were notified.

Margaret had not yet returned.

Daniel arrived with his attorney voluntarily.

Claire saw him through the foyer.

He looked at Rebecca.

For the first time, she saw the brother beneath everything else.

"Becca."

Rebecca's expression hardened.

"Don't."

He stopped.

"I am sorry."

"You stole from me."

"I know."

"You threatened me."

"I know."

"You let Mom pretend I was dead."

Daniel's eyes filled.

"I was eighteen when you disappeared."

"And thirty-seven when you found me."

He looked down.

There was no answer to that.

Claire watched him struggle.

Part of her remembered the man she had loved.

The man who brought her coffee when she worked late.

The man who slept beside her for eight years.

The man who once drove three hours because Claire mentioned craving a pie from a childhood restaurant.

Perhaps some of those moments were real.

That was the tragedy.

Real tenderness did not cancel real betrayal.

Daniel looked at Claire.

"The ledger is real."

"Police are preparing the paperwork."

"Margaret will destroy it before then."

Rebecca Sloan entered.

"They're already coordinating with cemetery management."

Daniel nodded.

"Good."

A car stopped outside.

Everyone turned.

Margaret stepped through the front door.

Alone.

She looked at Rebecca.

For one astonishing moment, her face became soft.

"My baby."

Rebecca stared at her.

Margaret opened her arms.

Rebecca did not move.

"Don't call me that."

Margaret's face tightened.

"I saved your life."

"You erased it."

"I protected Daniel."

"You used him."

"I protected this family."

Rebecca laughed.

"There it is."

Margaret's eyes moved to Daniel.

"You called her."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"You weak little fool."

Daniel flinched.

Claire saw it.

A child inside a grown man.

Still waiting for approval.

Margaret turned to Claire.

"You did this."

Claire almost smiled.

"No."

Margaret pointed toward Rebecca.

"Before you, Daniel understood loyalty."

Rebecca answered.

"Before Claire, Daniel understood fear."

Margaret slapped her.

The room exploded.

Daniel grabbed Margaret's wrist before she could strike again.

"Stop."

Margaret stared at her son.

"Let go of me."

"No."

Her disbelief was almost comical.

"Daniel."

"No."

Margaret's voice dropped.

"I gave you everything."

Daniel looked at her.

"You gave me a debt and called it a family."

She jerked her arm free.

Then police entered.

Margaret did not run.

She smiled.

"What exactly is happening?"

A detective approached.

"Margaret Morgan, we have a warrant authorizing a search related to financial fraud and evidence tampering."

Margaret laughed.

"Based on the word of these people?"

"Based on records."

Claire watched the confidence flicker.

The detective continued.

"We also have authorization to examine the Morgan family burial plot."

Margaret went white.

Daniel had been right.

The ledger existed.

Margaret looked at him.

"You."

Daniel said nothing.

She whispered.

"You betrayed me."

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"No, Mom."

He shook his head.

"I finally stopped helping you betray everyone else."

Margaret was taken away.

But the story did not end there.

At 6:40 the following morning, investigators opened Harold Morgan's burial vault under court authorization.

Inside a sealed steel container beneath the casket platform, they found the ledger.

Payments.

Names.

Dates.

Bribes.

Shell companies.

Twenty-two years of financial crimes.

At the bottom of the final page, investigators found one handwritten note from Harold.

If this is ever found, tell Claire I am sorry we made her inheritance responsible for our sins.

Claire read the copy in Rebecca Sloan's office.

Then another document arrived.

A federal notice.

Morgan Development's primary lender had accelerated the default after disclosure of fraud.

The nineteen-day deadline disappeared.

The debt was due immediately.

Rachel looked at Claire.

"This triggers the trust clause."

Claire nodded.

Rebecca Sloan placed the final authorization in front of her.

"With your signature, the Vale Trust can take controlling ownership today."

Claire stared at the line.

Daniel sat across the table.

He had asked to attend.

She looked at him.

"This is what your family wanted from me."

He nodded.

"My signature."

"Yes."

Claire picked up the pen.

Daniel said quietly.

"Do what you need to do."

May you like

Claire signed.

And Morgan Development Group stopped belonging to the Morgans.
