Chapter 7 - The Retirement Money

Arthur asked Eric to meet him at the family home.

Claire did not attend, but Arthur later told her what happened.

He placed the account statements on the kitchen table and demanded an explanation.

Eric claimed every charge had been approved by Linda.

Linda claimed she believed Claire did not mind.

Melissa said the money was shared family money.

Arthur asked one question.

“How much of it did any of you earn?”

No one answered.

Then Eric admitted his company was close to bankruptcy.

The luxury development contract did not exist. He had invented the story because he wanted Arthur to believe he was successful.

He had used the family account to maintain his lifestyle, hoping a future project would allow him to repay everything.

Arthur demanded that Eric sell the new vehicle purchased with Claire’s money.

Eric refused.

“You can’t tell me how to run my life.”

Arthur replied, “Then you will not run your life using my daughter’s money.”

Linda defended Eric.

“He has children to support.”

“So does Claire,” Arthur said. “Yet you humiliated her child at my retirement dinner while eating food she paid for.”

It was the first time Arthur had openly opposed his wife.

Linda began crying, but Arthur did not change his decision.

He moved his retirement savings into a new personal account. He canceled every authorized family card. He contacted an attorney about recovering the money Eric had taken.

Then he packed a suitcase and moved into a small apartment near the river.

He told Linda he would return only after she acknowledged what she had done and agreed to financial counseling.

Linda called Claire that evening.

“You turned your father against me.”

“No,” Claire replied. “The bank statements did that.”

“Family should help family.”

“Help is freely given. What you did was take.”

“You have more money than you need.”

“You never asked what I needed. You never cared what Noah needed.”

Linda became silent.

Claire continued.

“You gave my child a hotdog at a table full of steaks to show him where you believed he belonged. Now you know where I stand.”

She ended the call.
