Chapter 4 - The Bill No One Expected

Claire asked the nearest waiter for a menu.

“I’d like to order my son a steak with no sauce, please.”

Eric immediately shook his head.

“The kitchen prepared a fixed menu. Don’t complicate things.”

The waiter responded carefully.

“We can prepare a plain steak for him.”

“Then please do.”

Linda placed down her fork.

“You’re spoiling him.”

Claire turned to Noah.

“Would you like steak, chicken, or pasta?”

“Steak, please,” he whispered.

“Then steak it is.”

The waiter nodded and left.

For several minutes, no one spoke to Claire.

Then Eric began telling a story about his latest construction project. He claimed he had secured a contract for a luxury development, although Claire knew his company had not completed a profitable project in almost a year.

When dessert arrived, Arthur gave a retirement speech.

He thanked Linda for supporting him.

He thanked Eric for “continuing the Bennett name in business.”

He thanked Melissa and the grandchildren for filling his life with joy.

He did not mention Claire.

He did not mention that she had paid his medical bills.

He did not mention that she had covered the mortgage for eight months when he could not work.

He did not mention Noah.

Claire waited until Arthur sat down.

Then a waiter carrying an empty plate stumbled near the table. The plate slipped, breaking against the floor.

Everyone turned toward the sound.

In that brief silence, Eric leaned toward Claire.

“Try not to complain when the bill comes. This night is about Dad.”

“What do you mean?”

“The wine and room fee were more than expected.”

“How much more?”

Eric avoided her eyes.

Claire immediately understood.

“You charged everything to the family account.”

“Mom authorized it.”

“That account is for our parents’ living expenses.”

Linda interrupted.

“Your father only retires once.”

Claire looked at the wine, the flowers, the private room, and the untouched food.

Then she looked at Noah’s cold hotdog.

Something inside her finally became quiet.

Not angry.

Not emotional.

Simply finished.

She stood and asked the waiter to split the bill.
