Chapter 6 - A Family Meeting

The metal box contained copies, not originals. There were bank statements showing payments from Dane Capital to Gertrude over seven years, private emails between Hailey and Martin Bell, and a draft divorce petition prepared for Brandon six months earlier.
The proposed settlement claimed that Mercer House was marital property because Brandon had funded extensive improvements. Attached invoices showed $2.3 million in renovations paid by Blue Heron Advisory.
Charlotte recognized every renovation. She had paid for them through Mercer Property Holdings.
Someone had created a second financial history.
Naomi recommended silence. “Let them believe the evidence is incomplete. People who think they are almost safe make useful mistakes.”
Charlotte agreed to a family meeting at the house that evening. She wore a navy suit, brought Naomi and placed a recorder openly on the table.
Gertrude sat at the head as though ownership could be established by choosing the largest chair.
“This has gone far enough,” she began. “We are prepared to forgive your behavior if you restore the funds and sign a revised consent.”
Charlotte looked around the table. “Tell me why Dane Capital has paid you for seven years.”
Gertrude’s composure cracked. Hailey turned toward her mother. Leonard looked at the door.
Brandon said, “Don’t answer that.”
“Seven years,” Charlotte repeated. “Long before the residence project.”
Gertrude folded her hands. “Victor Dane believed the property was suitable for development. He paid consulting fees.”
“He paid you to gain access to my father’s archive.”
“Your father was a paranoid old man.”
Charlotte felt anger rise, then settle into something colder. “And you let Skylar sign a forged consent.”
Gertrude shrugged. “Children sign meaningless papers every day.”
Brandon closed his eyes. He knew the sentence would destroy her if heard by a jury.
Hailey suddenly stood. “I didn’t know about the archive. Brandon said Charlotte had agreed and wanted the project kept quiet for tax reasons.”
“Sit down,” Gertrude snapped.
“You told me the deposit was guaranteed.”
The family began turning on itself with astonishing speed. Leonard accused Brandon of hiding the exit payment. Hailey accused Leonard of inflating vendor contracts. Brandon accused Gertrude of making the deal with Dane before he understood the risk.
Charlotte listened.
Then she placed the draft divorce petition on the table.
“Which of you planned to tell me I was being divorced after the loan money reached Lisbon?”
Silence returned.
Brandon looked at her. “I never intended to file it.”
“You hired a lawyer.”
“As protection.”
“From your wife?”
“From your father’s trust.”
Naomi slid a second document forward: an emergency court order restraining every defendant from transferring, damaging or entering protected areas of the property.
“You’ve all been served,” she said.
Gertrude read the first page and smiled.
“This order came ten minutes too late.”
May you like
Charlotte’s stomach tightened.
Gertrude lifted her phone. On the screen was a live video of flames rising inside a storage building on the far side of the estate.
