Chapter 4 - Her Father’s Warning

Charlotte’s father, Thomas Mercer, had distrusted Brandon from the beginning, but he had expressed it with the restraint of a man who knew that direct opposition could push a daughter closer to the wrong person.
Two weeks before his death, Thomas had given Charlotte a brass key.
“If anyone ever tells you the house belongs to the family,” he had said, “remember that people often say family when they mean themselves.”
The key opened a private box at Westbridge First Bank. Charlotte had not visited it in seven years.
Inside she found the original trust deed, an old photograph of herself and Thomas on the house steps, and a sealed envelope marked FOR CHARLOTTE, IF THE HOUSE IS THREATENED.
Naomi waited beside her as she opened it.
Thomas’s letter explained that Mercer House contained more than family memories. A buried archive beneath the east conservatory held documents from the early years of Mercer Civil Works, including evidence that a group of city officials and developers had tried to force Thomas into a fraudulent land scheme. He had refused, preserved the records and placed the property in a protected trust because the archive could someday become evidence.
One name was underlined twice: Victor Dane.
Charlotte knew the name. Dane Capital was the lender behind the Vale Residences loan.
The letter ended with a warning.
If Victor Dane ever gains an interest in the house, assume the house is not what he wants.
Naomi read the sentence again. “Your husband’s family may be greedy, but this suggests someone chose them.”
Charlotte remembered the plan. Skylar’s bedroom and the conservatory were both inside the wing marked for demolition.
They drove to Northline, where Charlotte used a secure conference room. Naomi contacted the county recorder and filed emergency notices disputing the forged instruments. Elias began comparing Charlotte’s genuine signatures to the construction documents. The bank confirmed that the $250,000 deposit had not gone through.
At eleven thirty, Martin Bell arrived at the house with contractors anyway.
Skylar’s security app still connected to the exterior cameras. Charlotte watched on her laptop as Gertrude welcomed Bell at the door. Hailey paced in the driveway. Brandon spoke to a man in a charcoal coat whom Charlotte had never seen.
Naomi paused the image. “That’s Victor Dane’s son, Adrian.”
Adrian looked toward the nearest camera and smiled as though he knew Charlotte was watching.
Then the feed went black.
One minute later, Charlotte received a photograph from Brandon. It showed her father’s brass key lying on the dining-room table.
YOU LEFT SOMETHING IMPORTANT BEHIND, the message said.
May you like
Charlotte reached into her purse.
Her key was gone.
