Chapter 9 - The Falcon’s Last Flight

Victor resisted until the countdown reached two minutes.
Then Nora showed him a second document she had discovered inside the contingency files.
It contained instructions for his elimination.
Once Victor delivered Ellie and the stolen data, Adrian planned to remove him from the network permanently.
Victor read the document three times.
“He wouldn’t.”
“He built his life by betraying people,” Nora said. “Why did you imagine you were different?”
Victor looked at Lena as though expecting sympathy.
She gave him none.
The countdown reached ninety seconds.
Victor opened a concealed compartment inside the briefcase and removed a satellite phone.
He dialed a memorized number.
Adrian answered immediately.
“Status?”
Victor looked at Nora.
She pointed toward the speaker control.
He activated it.
“The penthouse is compromised,” Victor said.
Adrian’s voice remained calm.
“Then follow the exit procedure.”
“The girl isn’t here.”
There was a pause.
“Where is she?”
“Safe.”
“You had one responsibility.”
Victor’s breathing became uneven.
“The release protocol activated.”
“I know.”
“I need your authorization to stop it.”
“No.”
The answer shocked him.
“The files will expose everyone.”
“Exactly.”
“You’ll destroy the network.”
“The network can be rebuilt.”
Victor stared at the phone.
“What about me?”
“You made yourself disposable.”
Lena closed her eyes.
Victor finally heard the truth from the man he had served.
Nora leaned toward the phone.
“Adrian.”
Silence followed.
Then a quiet laugh.
“Nora Whitmore.”
“It’s been a long time.”
“Not long enough.”
“You should have stayed behind your school desk.”
“You should have chosen a better corpse.”
The countdown reached forty seconds.
Adrian’s voice sharpened.
“You won’t stop the release.”
“I already found the administrator channel.”
“You need my voice authorization.”
Nora watched the voiceprint display.
Every word Adrian spoke was being analyzed.
She needed one specific phrase.
Falcon confirms sky clearance.
“You’re running,” she said.
“I’m relocating.”
“To the private airfield near Trenton?”
Adrian did not respond.
Marcus had already received the coordinates.
Nora continued.
“You won’t reach the plane.”
“You still believe institutions protect people.”
“No. I believe evidence gives honest people a chance.”
The countdown reached twenty seconds.
Adrian laughed again.
“You were always sentimental.”
“And you were always predictable.”
Nora played a synthetic alert through the line.
Unauthorized aircraft detected. Confirm departure clearance.
Adrian reacted without thinking.
“Falcon confirms sky clearance.”
The voiceprint turned green.
Nora entered the captured authorization.
The countdown stopped at seven seconds.
The penthouse fell silent.
Victor lowered the phone.
Adrian spoke once more.
“You think you’ve won?”
Nora looked at Lena.
Her daughter stood without trembling now.
“You lost the moment she stopped being afraid of you.”
Nora ended the call.
Seconds later, Marcus Reed sent a message.
TARGET VEHICLE STOPPED.
The police entered the penthouse after Evelyn opened the door.
Victor did not resist when they placed him under arrest.
He looked smaller without the apartment, the money, and the fear surrounding him.
An agent secured the laptop and encrypted drive.
Another collected the briefcase.
Lena watched as Victor was escorted toward the elevator.
Before the doors closed, he turned toward her.
“You’ll come back when you understand what life costs.”
Lena looked at the wedding ring on the table.
May you like
“I understand now.”
The elevator doors closed.
