Chapter 7 - The Man Who Refused to Die
Twenty-eight years earlier, Adrian Voss had nearly destroyed Nora’s life.
He discovered her real position during an operation involving a defense researcher named Malcolm Price.
Price had been selling propulsion data to pay gambling debts. Nora identified the financial pattern and helped persuade him to cooperate.
Voss responded by targeting Nora’s family.
Lena was six years old at the time.
One afternoon, Nora arrived at her elementary school and discovered that someone had attempted to collect her using forged authorization documents.
The school secretary refused because the man did not know Lena’s classroom nickname.
That single detail saved her.
Nora moved Lena to a protected residence for three months. She told her daughter they were helping a sick relative.
Afterward, Nora promised herself that Lena would never become part of another operation.
That promise explained the secrecy.
It also created the distance Victor later exploited.
In the penthouse, police lights began flashing against the windows.
Victor watched them approach.
“You think they can protect you?” he asked.
“They aren’t here only for you,” Nora replied.
He glanced toward the encrypted messages.
Nora saw understanding appear in his face.
“You contacted the federal task force,” he said.
“I contacted someone who knows how Adrian Voss operates.”
“He’s not Voss anymore.”
“Names don’t change habits.”
Victor laughed nervously.
“You believe this ends with an arrest? He has people everywhere.”
“Then tonight is a good time to identify them.”
“You don’t understand what he has.”
“What does he have?”
Victor’s eyes moved toward Lena.
Nora recognized the tactic.
He wanted to make them afraid of asking.
She opened the folder marked Contingencies.
Inside were photographs of judges, contractors, military officers, journalists, and members of congressional staff.
Each photograph had a financial record attached to it.
Some showed bribes.
Others showed debts, secret relationships, or illegal contracts.
Adrian had spent decades collecting leverage.
Blue Falcon was not merely a spy.
He was the center of a private network built on coercion.
Victor had helped maintain that network.
Nora found a document titled Princeton Exit.
It outlined emergency steps to be taken if the operation was exposed.
Destroy local servers.
Remove Victor and Ellie.
Discredit Lena.
Neutralize Lantern’s mother.
Lena read the final instruction.
“What does neutralize mean?”
Victor looked away.
Nora’s voice remained steady.
“It means they were deciding whether to silence me.”
Lena’s face hardened.
“And you knew?”
“He writes dramatic contingency plans,” Victor said. “Most were never meant to be used.”
“Did you know?”
Victor did not answer.
Lena walked to a narrow table near the windows and removed her wedding ring.
She placed it beside Victor’s fallen glass.
The sound was almost too soft to hear.
Yet Victor stared at the ring as if it had shattered the room.
“You don’t get to do this,” he said.
“I already did.”
“You have no money.”
“I’ll survive.”
“No career.”
“I’ll rebuild it.”
“No access to the accounts.”
“My mother found them.”
Victor stepped toward her.
Evelyn blocked him again.
Lena looked directly into his eyes.
“And you no longer have me.”
The front door shook beneath a heavy knock.
“Princeton Police!”
