Chapter 12 - The House in Lyon

Two weeks later, Margaret returned to Lyon.

Claire and Luca traveled with her.

The French court had restored Margaret’s legal identity, though the process of untangling the Laurent estate had only begun.

Philippe remained hospitalized.

Hélène refused to speak.

Investigators seized properties across France and Switzerland.

News channels called it the Beaumont Scandal.

Journalists camped outside the villa.

But beneath the public story, the more disturbing questions remained unanswered.

Who controlled the Black Rose?

Why had Claire and Luca been watched since childhood?

What did Asset C mean?

And who was L.B.?

The ruins of Château Laurent stood beyond rows of neglected vines.

Margaret had not returned since the fire.

Only one wing remained standing.

The rest had collapsed into stone and weeds.

Claire walked beside her mother through the broken entrance.

“This was your home?”

“Yes.”

“It feels strange.”

“For me too.”

Luca remained a few steps behind them.

He had resigned from the Beaumont family company.

He refused access to his accounts until investigators determined which assets had been stolen.

Philippe sent him three letters from the hospital.

Luca returned each unopened.

Inside the ruined château, Margaret found the staircase where she had last seen her father.

The upper floor was gone.

Sunlight poured through the broken roof.

Claire touched a scorched wall.

“Do you remember the fire?”

“Every day.”

They reached the remains of the music room.

A blackened piano stood beneath fallen beams.

Margaret closed her eyes.

For an instant, she heard her mother playing.

Then Luca called from the corridor.

“I found something.”

Behind a collapsed cabinet was a stone engraved with the Laurent crest.

In its center was a keyhole.

Margaret removed the silver key.

It turned.

A section of floor shifted open.

Beneath it was a narrow iron box.

Claire helped lift it out.

Inside were letters wrapped in oilcloth.

The first was addressed to Marguerite.

Margaret unfolded it.

My dearest daughter,

If you have found this, then the bank has fallen and those we trusted have betrayed us.

The Black Rose is older than our family and more patient than any government. They do not steal fortunes directly. They arrange marriages, debts, scandals, and deaths until property passes into chosen hands.

Your mother discovered that the Circle was preparing to take the Laurent holdings through you.

Margaret paused.

“Through me?”

Claire leaned closer.

Margaret continued reading.

They intended to arrange your marriage to Philippe Beaumont.

Luca looked away.

Margaret’s hand shook.

Philippe was not the architect. He was selected because he was ambitious, indebted, and easy to control.

Hélène discovered the arrangement. She believed removing you would allow Philippe to choose her instead.

Do not assume jealousy was her only motive.

Hélène’s family has served the Circle for generations.

Margaret lowered the letter.

Claire whispered, “Hélène started the fire because she wanted Philippe?”

“Partly.”

Luca’s face was pale.

“My mother’s family served them.”

Margaret unfolded the second page.

The ledger has been divided into three parts. Thomas knows where one section lies. Henri has been instructed to protect another. The final section must remain with the bloodline.

The phrase confused her.

“With the bloodline?”

Claire touched her locket.

“Maybe Dad thought that meant me.”

Margaret continued.

If the Circle fails to control the Laurent heir, they will attempt to create another claim through a branch family.

Trust the child marked by the winter star.

Margaret read the line twice.

“What is a winter star?” Luca asked.

No one knew.

At the bottom of the box lay a birth certificate.

Margaret lifted it.

The document belonged to a child born at the villa twenty-seven years earlier.

Name: Lucien Bastien Laurent.

Mother: Isabelle Moreau-Laurent.

Father: Not declared.

Margaret stared at the date.

Twenty-seven years before Luca’s birth.

The initials were L.B.L.

L.B.

Claire looked at Margaret.

“Your mother had another child?”

Margaret shook her head.

“I never knew.”

“A brother?”

“Possibly.”

Luca examined the certificate.

“The payment initials on the ledger could belong to Lucien Bastien.”

“Or to someone using his identity,” Margaret said.

Inside the box was one final object.

A photograph of a baby wrapped in a white blanket.

On the child’s shoulder was a birthmark shaped like a small eight-pointed star.

Luca stared at it.

His breathing changed.

Claire noticed.

“What?”

Luca unbuttoned the top of his shirt.

Near his collarbone was a pale birthmark.

An eight-pointed star.

Margaret looked at the photograph.

Then at Luca.

“No.”

Claire whispered, “The winter star.”

Luca stepped back.

“My mother told me I was born in Paris.”

Margaret looked at the birth certificate.

Lucien Bastien Laurent had supposedly been born twenty-seven years before Luca.

But the certificate looked too clean.

The ink too modern.

Margaret turned it over.

A later date was stamped on the back.

The document had been reissued three months after Luca’s birth.
