Chapter 11 - The Arrests

By dawn, the Beaumont villa was filled with investigators.

Philippe survived the gunshot.

He was taken to a private hospital under armed guard.

Hélène was arrested for attempted murder, conspiracy, unlawful detention, and obstruction.

Several dinner guests were detained.

Marcel Vignon attempted to flee through the vineyard and was found hiding beneath an irrigation shed.

Henri Duval surrendered thirty years of financial records.

Elise vanished before police could question her.

No one saw her leave.

Claire sat in the library wrapped in a blanket.

Luca brought her tea.

Neither drank.

Margaret stood near the window speaking with Inspector Alain Mercier.

He was a senior investigator from Lyon, broad-shouldered and careful with every word.

“We confirmed your identity through archived records,” Mercier said.

“Then I am no longer legally dead.”

“Not once the court corrects the declaration.”

“And the Beaumont assets?”

“That will take years.”

“I do not care about the money.”

Mercier studied her.

“Everyone says that before seeing how much money is involved.”

“My parents were murdered.”

“That investigation will be reopened.”

“By people connected to the same institutions that buried it?”

His expression remained neutral.

“You do not trust the authorities.”

“My husband did. He died.”

Mercier glanced toward Claire.

“Thomas Hale’s crash is also being reviewed.”

Margaret lowered her voice.

“What have you found?”

“The brake line was cut.”

She closed her eyes.

She had known.

Knowing was not the same as hearing it confirmed.

“Was Philippe responsible?”

“We do not know.”

“Hélène?”

“We do not know.”

“Then what do you know?”

Mercier hesitated.

“The order was paid through an account listed on the microfilm.”

“Whose initials?”

“L.B.”

Margaret thought of the payment made twenty-seven years before Luca’s birth.

“Who is L.B.?”

“That is what we intend to discover.”

Across the room, Claire rose.

“Mum.”

Margaret joined her.

Claire looked exhausted.

“I am sorry I pushed you away.”

“You had every right.”

“No. I had questions. That did not give me the right to leave you alone.”

Margaret touched her face.

“I made you carry a dangerous secret your whole life.”

“You did not. Dad did.”

“I allowed it without knowing.”

Claire leaned into her.

For the first time since the revelation, mother and daughter held each other.

Luca watched from a distance.

Margaret saw guilt in his expression.

She approached him.

“You protected Claire.”

“Not soon enough.”

“You could not protect her from a truth you did not know.”

He looked toward the hall where officers carried boxes of records.

“My parents built my life from stolen things.”

“You did not choose that.”

“I benefited.”

“That is not the same as guilt.”

“Is that what you told yourself when you built a new life under another name?”

Margaret did not take offense.

“No. I told myself survival was not theft.”

Luca nodded slowly.

“What happens now?”

“You and Claire decide whether this changes what you are.”

Claire came to stand beside him.

Luca took her hand.

“My parents tried to use her.”

“Yes.”

“I need to know whether our meeting was truly an accident.”

“So do I.”

Claire looked at him.

“I believe you.”

Luca’s eyes filled.

“That is more than I deserve.”

“It is not forgiveness,” she said. “It is a beginning.”

Inspector Mercier approached.

“We found something beneath Room Thirteen.”

He led them through the cellar.

Behind the steel room, investigators had opened another passage.

It descended farther underground.

At the bottom stood a small chamber containing shelves of files.

Many had been burned.

One metal cabinet remained intact.

Mercier opened it.

Inside were surveillance photographs of Claire.

At university.

At work.

Walking with Luca.

Entering Margaret’s catering business.

The earliest photograph showed Claire at fourteen.

Luca stared.

“My family watched her before I met her.”

Margaret picked up the photograph.

On the back was a black rose and a handwritten instruction.

Maintain distance until activation.

Claire whispered, “Activation?”

Mercier pulled another file from the cabinet.

It contained a photograph of Luca at age seventeen.

The same instruction appeared on the back.

Margaret looked between them.

“They watched both of you.”

Luca’s face hardened.

“Then our meeting was not an accident.”

Mercier opened a third folder.

Inside was a photograph of Thomas Hale’s wrecked car.

Below it was a typed report.

SUBJECT ELIMINATED.

ASSET C REMAINS UNAWARE.

Claire gripped Margaret’s arm.

“Asset C?”

May you like

Margaret looked at the photograph of fourteen-year-old Claire.

“You.”
