Chapter 15 - THE NAME THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE EXISTED

Dawn rose over a damaged mansion.
Police filled the estate.
Owen’s surviving men were arrested.
Dr. Carrow agreed to cooperate in exchange for protection.
The Meridian Circle lost access to several Vale accounts after Adrian froze the family trust and turned the financial records over to federal investigators.
Hannah was reunited with her sister.
Mrs. Hart survived surgery.
Sophie’s false medical diagnoses were formally withdrawn.
Adrian publicly ended his engagement to Celeste and admitted that his failure to listen had allowed his daughter to remain in danger.
For the first time, Elena’s name appeared in the press beside the word hero instead of kidnapper.
None of that erased what had happened.
But it gave Sophie something she had not possessed in years.
A home where she could tell the truth.
Three days later, Elena found her in the nursery drawing.
The picture showed Vale House with sunlight in every window.
There were four people in front.
Sophie.
Adrian.
Elena.
And a woman wearing a red scarf.
“Is that Ella?” Elena asked.
Sophie shook her head.
“Mommy.”
Elena sat beside her.
“No one knows where she is.”
“She’s alive.”
“What makes you certain?”
“The woman in my dream told me.”
Elena smiled gently.
“Dreams can feel very real.”
Sophie looked at her.
“You sound like Daddy used to.”
Elena stopped smiling.
“You’re right.”
Adrian entered carrying the metal case recovered from the conservatory roof.
Julian followed him.
Ella stood behind them.
The sealed trust schedule lay inside.
“We should open it together,” Adrian said.
Sophie moved closer to Elena.
Julian looked nervous.
“What exactly happens when we know?”
Ella answered.
“Nothing immediately. The document identifies the person legally entitled to the second voting block.”
“And if that person is dead?”
“Control passes to Sophie.”
Adrian placed the file on the table.
“If the person is alive?”
“They can challenge your authority over Vale Holdings today.”
Julian rubbed his hands together.
“So one of us may discover he is not who he thinks he is, and a mysterious relative may take control of the company before lunch.”
Ella looked at him.
“That is the simplified version.”
Adrian broke the seal.
Inside was a birth certificate, a trust amendment, and a handwritten letter from his father.
He read the first page.
Then stopped.
“What does it say?” Elena asked.
Adrian looked at Julian.
The color had drained from his face.
Julian took the document.
His hands began to shake.
“This is impossible.”
Sophie stepped closer.
“Who is E.V.?”
Julian looked at her.
“It isn’t Ella.”
Everyone turned toward the woman in the red scarf.
Ella did not appear surprised.
Adrian read the name aloud.
“Evelyn Vale.”
Mrs. Hart’s first name was Evelyn.
But the birth date on the certificate belonged to someone much younger.
Someone born seven years ago.
The same day as Sophie.
Elena took the document.
It listed twin daughters.
Sophie Isabel Vale.
Evelyn Rose Vale.
Adrian gripped the edge of the table.
“Isabel gave birth to twins?”
Ella closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“What happened to the other child?”
“I was told she died.”
“By whom?”
“Isabel.”
Sophie stared at the birth certificate.
“I have a sister?”
No one answered.
A phone began ringing inside the metal case.
Everyone froze.
The case had been searched by police.
There had been no phone inside it.
Adrian lifted the false bottom.
A small black device lay beneath the trust papers.
The screen displayed one incoming call.
ISABEL VALE.
Adrian answered.
For several seconds, there was only static.
Then a woman spoke.
Her voice was older than the one on the recorder.
But unmistakable.
“Adrian?”
His knees nearly gave way.
“Isabel.”
Sophie covered her mouth.
Ella stepped closer to the phone.
“Where are you?”
Isabel ignored her.
“Listen carefully. You do not have much time.”
Adrian gripped the device.
“Where is our daughter?”
A pause followed.
Then Isabel whispered, “Which daughter is standing beside you?”
Everyone looked at Sophie.
Her face turned pale.
Adrian’s voice broke.
“Sophie.”
Another long silence.
When Isabel spoke again, fear filled every word.
“That child is not Sophie.”
The line went dead.
At that exact moment, someone knocked on the nursery door.
Three slow knocks.
Elena moved in front of the child.
Adrian raised his weapon.
Julian opened the door.
No one stood in the hallway.
Only a small red suitcase rested on the floor.
A luggage tag was tied to the handle.
May you like
EVELYN ROSE VALE.
From inside the suitcase came the muffled sound of a child crying.
