Chapter 11 - THE TRIAL INSIDE THE MANSION

The police arrested Celeste at her hotel the following morning.
Owen Mercer remained missing.
Dr. Carrow was detained at the Canadian border.
The memory card contained enough evidence to charge Celeste with kidnapping, child endangerment, unlawful imprisonment, financial conspiracy, and obstruction of justice.
But Celeste refused to be defeated quietly.
At her first hearing, her attorney claimed the evidence had been fabricated by Adrian to escape a costly marriage agreement.
He argued that Elena had planted the recordings.
He demanded an emergency evaluation of Sophie’s mental competence.
The judge refused to place Sophie in public proceedings but appointed an independent child advocate.
For three days, specialists interviewed her.
Elena was not permitted in the room.
Neither was Adrian.
When Sophie emerged from the final interview, she ran to Elena instead of her father.
Adrian watched in silence.
Later that night, he found Elena in the mansion’s winter garden.
“You think I resent you,” he said.
“Do you?”
“No.”
He sat across from her.
“I’m grateful she trusts someone.”
“She wants to trust you.”
“I gave her reasons not to.”
Elena did not deny it.
Adrian looked toward the dark glass ceiling.
“When Isabel became afraid, I thought she needed treatment. When Sophie became afraid, I thought she was repeating her mother’s instability. Celeste did not create my blindness. She used it.”
“That distinction matters.”
“It doesn’t feel like it.”
“It will matter to Sophie when she decides whether you can change.”
Adrian studied her.
“Why did you become a nanny?”
“I was a pediatric nurse.”
“What happened?”
“My younger sister had a daughter named Lily. Lily told adults that her father hurt her. He was respected, wealthy, and persuasive. Everyone thought she was confused.”
Adrian understood.
“You believed her.”
“Not soon enough.”
“What happened?”
“She survived. Barely.”
“And her father?”
“In prison.”
“You testified?”
“I found the evidence everyone else ignored.”
Adrian leaned back.
“So this is personal.”
“All work involving children is personal.”
The next morning, Sophie’s advocate delivered her findings.
Sophie showed no evidence of compulsive lying or delusional disorder.
Her memories were fragmented but consistent with trauma.
Her previous diagnoses appeared unsupported.
Dr. Carrow’s records contained copied assessments from unrelated patients.
Adrian read the report twice.
Then he called a meeting in the ballroom.
Every remaining staff member attended.
Police officers stood near the doors.
Celeste was brought from custody under a temporary court order because investigators believed she could identify other conspirators.
She entered wearing a gray suit and no handcuffs visible beneath her coat.
Even under arrest, she carried herself like the owner of the house.
Sophie stood beside Elena.
Adrian faced Celeste.
“For four years, you controlled my daughter’s care.”
“I protected her.”
“You drugged her.”
“I followed medical instructions.”
“You imprisoned her nanny.”
“Owen did.”
“You burned her hair.”
Celeste looked at Sophie.
The child flinched.
“I was correcting damage she caused herself.”
Elena stepped forward.
“You held a hot curling iron against her head.”
Celeste smiled.
“And you assaulted me.”
Police had recovered partial bathroom footage from a backup server.
The video began after Elena entered.
It showed Elena grabbing Celeste’s wrist and pushing her.
It did not show what happened before.
Celeste turned to Adrian.
“You see what she is. Violent. Obsessed. She has convinced your daughter that abuse makes her special.”
Sophie’s hand trembled.
Elena whispered, “You don’t have to speak.”
“Yes,” Sophie said. “I do.”
She walked to the center of the ballroom.
Celeste’s smile faded.
Sophie removed a small object from her pocket.
A silver button.
“I put this in the bathroom before Elena came.”
Adrian stared.
“What is it?”
“A camera.”
Julian looked at Elena.
“You knew?”
She shook her head.
Sophie looked toward Celeste.
“Hannah taught me.”
The police connected the device to a screen.
The full video appeared.
Celeste gripping Sophie’s hair.
Celeste heating the curling iron.
Celeste saying, “If you tell your father, I will make Elena disappear like Hannah.”
The ballroom became silent.
Celeste’s face finally cracked.
She turned toward Sophie.
“You little monster.”
Adrian stepped between them.
“Do not speak to my daughter.”
Celeste laughed.
The sound was sharp and desperate.
“You still don’t understand. Sophie is not your daughter.”
No one moved.
Adrian stared at her.
“What did you say?”
Celeste looked around the ballroom.
May you like
Then she smiled again.
“Ask Isabel.”
