Chapter 14 - THE CEREMONY

The memorial ceremony began beneath a clear blue sky.

Thousands gathered in the park.

The seven pillars rose behind the stage. The glass circle turned slowly above them, responding to the wind.

Reporters filled the central aisle.

Security guards stood at every entrance.

Mayor Nathaniel Creed occupied the most prominent seat in the VIP section. He wore a dark suit and a white memorial flower.

Audrey sat three rows behind him.

Conrad’s chair remained empty.

Miriam had not been found.

Neither had the woman claiming to be Elara.

Rowan waited backstage while medical staff applied cream to a small burn on her hand from the previous evening’s installation work.

Milo checked the sensors.

“The sunlight pattern will reach full alignment at twelve sixteen,” he said.

“The director’s announcement begins at twelve ten.”

“Assuming no one interrupts.”

“Someone will.”

Celia monitored the crowd through facial-recognition software.

She identified three former Vale security officers entering with press credentials.

Investigators moved closer.

Elias carried the black folder onto the stage.

He began with a history of the Bellweather tragedy. Then he discussed the design competition and the council’s investigation.

Rowan listened from behind the curtain.

At twelve eleven, Audrey left her seat.

She approached the side stairs.

A guard tried to stop her, but Mayor Creed raised a hand and permitted her to pass.

Audrey climbed onto the stage.

She faced Rowan.

For a moment, both women remained silent.

Then Audrey began the confrontation they had rehearsed.

“You destroyed my career,” she said loudly.

Rowan stepped into view.

“You did that yourself.”

Reporters surged forward.

Audrey’s hand closed around the cup she carried.

It was supposed to contain cold water.

Instead, steam rose from it.

Rowan saw the surprise in Audrey’s eyes.

Someone had switched the cups.

Before Audrey could stop the motion, a man in the crowd struck her arm.

Hot chocolate flew into Rowan’s face.

The public saw only Audrey throwing it.

Gasps filled the park.

Audrey understood instantly that Conrad’s people had turned the performance into reality.

She continued anyway.

“That design should have been mine!”

“Then show them your first sketch,” Rowan replied.

“She stole everything from me!”

Elias opened the black folder.

The confrontation unfolded exactly as the public would later remember it.

Security surrounded Audrey.

The director displayed the timestamps.

Each record proved Rowan’s authorship.

Then Elias reached the last page.

“And the person who helped Audrey copy it was…”

Audrey turned toward the VIP area.

A red-haired woman had taken the empty seat beside Mayor Creed.

The same woman Rowan met the previous night.

The crowd began murmuring.

Cameras focused on her scarred face.

Elias removed the archival tape from the second signature.

The woman stood.

Rowan watched Mayor Creed.

He did not look surprised.

He looked relieved.

That frightened her more.

The second signature appeared.

It was not Elara Hale.

It read Miriam Hale-Creed.

Mayor Creed rose and offered his hand to the red-haired woman.

She took it.

Audrey stared at them.

“My mother?” Rowan whispered.

The woman on the stage shook her head.

“No. The signature belongs to Miriam, but the authorization belongs to me.”

She looked directly at Rowan.

“My name is Elara Creed.”

The reporters erupted.

Rowan could not move.

Mayor Creed placed a protective hand on the woman’s shoulder.

“My daughter survived the Bellweather fire,” he announced.

Every camera turned toward him.

Rowan’s thoughts collided.

Elara was Thomas Hale’s daughter.

Wasn’t she?

Miriam had been married to Thomas before Rowan’s birth.

But the initials on the pendant suggested another history.

Miriam Hale-Creed.

Elara Creed.

Mayor Creed faced the crowd with practiced sorrow.

“For twelve years, my family concealed Elara’s survival because Conrad Vale repeatedly threatened her life.”

The public heard a miraculous revelation.

Rowan heard a carefully constructed lie.

Creed continued.

“Elara created the memorial design. Audrey Vale stole it through her father’s criminal network. Rowan Hale, believing the work to be her own, unknowingly repeated a design she saw as a child.”

The statement shifted the narrative instantly.

Audrey became the thief.

Rowan became a mistaken imitator.

Creed’s supposed daughter became the true creator.

Elias looked at Rowan.

His expression showed that this was not what he expected.

The woman calling herself Elara raised the signed page.

“The memorial belongs to the families,” she said. “Not to Rowan. Not to Audrey. And not to the council.”

At twelve sixteen, sunlight passed through the glass circle.

Letters appeared across the stone pavement.

But the name projected beneath Mayor Creed’s feet was not his.

It was THOMAS HALE.

The crowd saw it.

Creed looked down.

His confident expression vanished.

Milo’s voice came through Rowan’s earpiece.

“The panels were altered overnight. Someone changed the code.”

“Can you restore it?”

“Not remotely.”

“Who had access?”

“Three people. You, Elias, and…”

He stopped.

“And who?”

“Miriam.”

At that moment, every screen surrounding the park went black.

A woman’s voice replaced the ceremony broadcast.

Miriam’s voice.

“Nathaniel,” she said, “you chose the wrong daughter to bring onto that stage.”

Creed stared at the screens.

The red-haired woman stepped away from him.

The broadcast continued.

“One of my daughters remembers the fire. The other remembers who ordered it.”

The screens displayed a live video feed.

Miriam sat in an unknown room.

Beside her was another red-haired woman.

Her face was hidden.

Creed whispered one word.

“Impossible.”

Then the feed ended.

Panic spread through the VIP area.

Security guards moved toward Creed.

Before they reached him, an explosion shook the seventh pillar.

Smoke filled the stage.

Someone grabbed Rowan from behind.

A cloth covered her mouth.

The last thing she saw was Audrey lunging toward her and Elias opening the black folder as pages scattered into the fire.
