Chapter 10 - Claire’s Confession

Back at Ashbourne, Claire asked to speak with Evelyn alone.

Daniel refused.

“No more private secrets.”

Walter agreed.

Even Melissa, still seated beneath the watch of a police officer, raised her head.

Claire stood before the fireplace.

For the first time since Evelyn had known her, she appeared uncertain.

“Nathan Cole and I joined the same law firm after university,” she began. “We became partners. Professionally and personally.”

“You were involved with him,” Evelyn said.

“Yes.”

“What does that have to do with Thomas?”

“Thomas hired our firm to restructure Ashbourne after Daniel’s first company exposed the estate to possible creditor claims.”

Daniel looked down.

Claire continued.

“During the process, Thomas disclosed Rose’s existence. He wanted to protect her without publicly acknowledging paternity. I drafted the primary trust.”

“And Nathan?” Evelyn asked.

“He handled historical title research.”

“What did he find?”

Claire walked to the window.

“An older ownership covenant created after the Second World War. Thomas’s grandfather had divided beneficial ownership between his two children.”

“Thomas’s father and Walter’s father?”

“No.”

Walter frowned.

“My father had no sister.”

Claire turned.

“Officially.”

The room became still.

“Thomas’s grandfather had an elder daughter named Eleanor,” Claire said. “She was born before his marriage and raised by relatives. When he later inherited Ashbourne, he privately granted Eleanor’s descendants a conditional share.”

Walter stared at her.

“Why has no one heard of her?”

“Because Eleanor disappeared in 1958.”

“Disappeared?”

“Family records claimed she emigrated. Nathan found evidence she remained in England under another name.”

Evelyn understood.

“The secondary beneficiary.”

“Possibly.”

“You said you never saw the schedule.”

“I did not see the final version.”

“But you helped create it.”

“I helped Thomas locate Eleanor’s descendants. At the time, we believed there was only one surviving line.”

“Who?”

Claire looked toward Melissa.

“Helena Vale and Margaret Mercer.”

Melissa stood abruptly.

“My mother was related to the Ashbournes?”

“Through Eleanor.”

Rose was not merely Thomas’s daughter.

She was also descended from a hidden branch of the Ashbourne family.

Evelyn sat down.

“That is why Thomas chose Margaret?”

Claire shook her head.

“I do not know whether he knew about the connection when they met. He claimed he discovered it later.”

Melissa’s voice trembled.

“My mother never knew.”

“Margaret may have.”

Daniel looked at Claire.

“So Rose’s claim existed even without Father.”

“Yes.”

“And Melissa?”

Claire hesitated.

“She may also have a contingent claim through Helena.”

Melissa stared at her.

“Then the farm could belong to me.”

“No,” Claire said. “Not automatically.”

“But I am Helena’s daughter.”

“The covenant favored Eleanor’s eldest surviving descendant under specific conditions.”

“Rose,” Evelyn said.

“Most likely.”

Melissa’s eyes filled with anger.

“Margaret took everything again.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“You still see this as something stolen from you?”

“My entire life, I was told my mother lost what should have been hers.”

“You were told a story by someone committing fraud.”

Melissa folded her arms tightly.

Claire continued.

“Thomas asked Nathan and me to keep the discovery confidential while he located Rose. Nathan disagreed. He believed the hidden covenant could be used to force a sale of Ashbourne.”

“So he joined Bellweather,” Evelyn said.

“He may have created Bellweather.”

“Why did you not warn us?”

Claire looked ashamed.

“Because Nathan threatened to expose my role in suppressing the historical covenant.”

“You suppressed it?”

“I filed a legal opinion arguing that Eleanor’s line could not be verified. At the time, I believed disclosure would trigger years of litigation and destroy the farm.”

“You buried their claim.”

“I delayed it.”

“For fourteen years.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn rose.

“All these years, you advised me as though I controlled Ashbourne.”

“You did control it.”

“While hiding the fact that another family line might own it.”

“I was trying to preserve Thomas’s wishes.”

“Thomas’s wishes have poisoned every person in this room.”

Claire did not defend herself.

Daniel walked to the black file on the desk.

“What exactly did Father put in the final schedule?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect us to believe Nathan knows, but you don’t?”

“Nathan stole several drafts when our partnership ended. Thomas completed the schedule with another solicitor.”

“Who?”

Claire looked at Evelyn.

“A man named Samuel Reed.”

Evelyn knew the name.

Samuel had served as Thomas’s personal accountant before disappearing shortly after Thomas’s death.

Police believed he had stolen client funds and fled abroad.

Walter spoke quietly.

“Samuel Reed died last month.”

Claire turned sharply.

“How?”

“His body was found in a rented flat in London. It was in the newspaper.”

Daniel opened his phone and searched.

The article described an elderly man living under an assumed name. Police had found no next of kin.

Claire sat down heavily.

“If Samuel is dead, the final schedule may be lost.”

Evelyn remembered the cassette tape recovered from the underground room.

“Thomas left a recording.”

Claire looked up.

“The authentication laboratory called this afternoon,” Evelyn continued. “They finished the transfer.”

She pressed a button on her phone.

Static filled the room.

Then Thomas’s voice emerged.

“If this recording is being played, the trust has been threatened. The person named in the secondary schedule must not be contacted until Rose Mercer reaches Ashbourne. Rose has been given the means to identify the second heir.”

The recording crackled.

Thomas continued.

“Do not trust Nathan Cole. Do not trust Samuel Reed. And if Claire claims she never saw the final schedule…”

The tape warped.

Everyone leaned closer.

“…believe her. I made sure she could not.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Thomas’s voice continued through the static.

“The second heir is unaware of their connection to Ashbourne. Revealing the name too early will place them in danger.”

A sharp sound interrupted the recording.

Then Thomas said one final sentence.

“Rose will recognize the heir by the scar beneath the left ear.”

The tape ended.

Everyone in the room instinctively looked at one another.

Daniel had no scar.

Melissa pulled her hair over her ears.

Walter stepped backward.

Evelyn noticed the movement.

“Walter?”

May you like

He turned his head.

Beneath his left ear was a pale crescent-shaped scar.
