Chapter 4 - Lily’s Red Ribbon

Lily led Evelyn toward the old music room.
Vanessa followed them to the bottom of the stairs but stopped when Evelyn turned.
“You cannot keep her from Grant,” Vanessa said.
“I am not keeping Lily from her father.”
Evelyn held the child closer.
“I am keeping her from the people who taught her to be afraid.”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“You disappeared for almost a year. Do not return dressed like a soldier and pretend you are still a mother.”
Evelyn saw Lily’s face tighten against her shoulder.
Every angry word spoken in the child’s presence became another weight she had to carry.
Evelyn lowered her voice.
“This conversation ends now.”
She entered the music room and locked the door.
The space smelled of dust and old wood. Grant had covered the piano with a gray sheet. The family portraits had been removed from the walls, leaving pale rectangles where they had hung for decades.
Lily slipped down from Evelyn’s arms.
She crossed to the fireplace and pushed her small fingers behind a carved wooden rose in the mantel.
A hidden panel opened.
Evelyn stared.
Her father had shown her the passage when she was seven years old.
It had been designed during the Second World War and led through the walls to the old nursery.
“How did you find this?” Evelyn asked.
“Nora told me to hide here when the shouting got loud.”
Evelyn glanced toward Nora.
The housekeeper’s eyes filled with guilt.
“There was no physical danger,” Nora said quickly. “But Grant and Vanessa argued at night. I did not want Lily hearing them.”
“What did they argue about?”
“The shares. A woman named Aurelia. And something Grant called the final signature.”
Footsteps entered the foyer.
Grant’s security team.
Lily opened the passage wider.
Before stepping inside, she reached behind her head and untied the red ribbon.
A tiny black object was sewn into one end.
Evelyn recognized it immediately.
A miniature audio recorder.
“Where did you get this?”
“Grandpa put it in my music box before he went to heaven.”
Evelyn’s father had died six months before her disappearance.
“He told me it was for secrets that made my stomach hurt,” Lily continued. “He said I should press the little button.”
“Did you record something?”
Lily nodded.
“Daddy and Vanessa talked in my room. They thought I was asleep.”
The music room door shook as someone tried the handle.
“Mrs. Calder,” a guard called. “Open the door.”
Evelyn ignored him.
Lily handed her the ribbon.
The recorder contained eight files.
The latest had been created the previous night.
Evelyn pressed play and lowered the volume.
Grant’s voice emerged through the tiny speaker.
The girl cannot remain beneficiary once Evelyn is declared dead.
Vanessa replied.
Then change the trust.
I cannot. Hartwell locked it before he died.
What about the twelve percent?
Already transferred.
To Aurelia?
A pause followed.
Then Grant spoke more quietly.
Do not use that name in this house.
The recording continued.
Vanessa asked, Does Evelyn know she exists?
Grant answered, Evelyn does not even know what her father did.
The music room door shook again.
A guard began entering a security code.
Evelyn stopped the recording and placed the ribbon inside her jacket.
“Who is Aurelia?” Nora asked.
“I do not know.”
Grant’s voice came through the door.
“Evelyn, open it. We can handle this privately.”
“You surrendered the right to privacy when you used Lily’s room for corporate fraud.”
Silence.
He had not known about the recorder.
That uncertainty gave Evelyn several seconds.
She guided Lily into the hidden passage. Nora followed. Evelyn entered last and pulled the panel closed just as the music room door opened.
They moved through darkness.
The passage was narrow, and the air smelled of stone. Evelyn kept one hand on Lily’s shoulder.
Behind them, muffled voices filled the music room.
“She knows about Aurelia,” Vanessa said.
Grant answered with a curse.
Lily stopped.
“There is another secret,” she whispered.
“What secret?”
“Daddy goes into my old nursery every night.”
“Does he take anything?”
“He carries a silver case.”
The passage ended behind the built-in bookcase of the nursery.
Evelyn pushed the release.
The nursery was almost empty.
Lily’s bed, toys and paintings had been removed. Dust covered the floor except for a clear path leading to the far wall.
The brass records-room key lay on a table.
Grant had left it there.
Evelyn picked it up.
On the wall above the table was a newly installed digital keypad.
The secure records room had been opened recently.
Then Nora noticed the marks in the dust.
Footprints.
One set belonged to Grant.
The second set was smaller.
A woman’s shoes.

The trail led into the hidden room.
But it did not lead back out.
